The World Ends With You sequel hinted at

Tetsuya Nomura sets tongues wagging.

Kingdom Hearts main man Tetsuya Nomura has hinted at a sequel to cult classic 2008 Nintendo DS game The World Ends With You.

Neku, the main character from the quirky role-playing game, makes a cameo appearance in the Tokyo Game Show trailer for Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, and Nomura told Japanese magazine Famitsu (via Andriasang) something TWEWY related is being worked on.

Nomura added that Neku's appearance could be taken as notice of something to come, but he didn't use the word "sequel".

TWEWY is set in a modern day Tokyo, with an art style inspired by Japanese youth culture. Combat takes place across both DS screens, fusing touchscreen controls with voice commands.

While it was critically acclaimed, some criticised the steep learning curve. The battle system in particular proved difficult for many.

Eurogamer's The World Ends With You review returned an 8/10.

"The World Ends With You, then, is the sort of game I desperately hope will leave some scratches on the unyielding grey carapace of modern games design once it's bounced off into inevitable obscurity," reviewer Dan Whitehead wrote.

"It's bold, inspiring and bubbling over with dozens of ideas, any one of which would be cause for celebration in most games, but the over-reliance on a daunting sink-or-swim combat system that will leave many players gasping for breath ultimately counts against it. A truly brilliant game, it's just a shame that it couldn't ease off on the information overload and make that brilliance easier for everyone to appreciate."

Can't decide if this is good news or bad news as I don't want them to mess with the 1st one, but the original is probably the 2nd best game I have ever played. The storyline was awesome, it was incredibly original, and it had one of the best soundtracks ever.

Yeah incredible game, best game on the DS and the best JRPG i've ever played. I'd love a sequel. My only issue with it is that it will probably come out on 3DS or at a long shot maybe Wii U, neither of which I intended to buy.

I've got to go back and finish the first one, its too good to leave in backlog stasis. Only problem i have is i'm not clever enough to play both screens at once but it feels 'wrong' just doing the one screen version.

One of the best games, if not THE best game on the DS. I know lots of people sturggled with the controls and Neku's (initial) attitude but it's such an incredibly inventive game. The secret with the dual controls is to realise that you only really need to focus on the bottom screen for 95% of the game, there's only a couple of bosses where you need to switch attention between the two screens heavily.

I just hope a sequel doesn't spoil the memory of the first game if they make one.

Hopefully a sequel if it still uses two screens would be playable on all DS's, I don't desalt want to buy a 3DS. The original was brilliant always had a jet set radio vibe with the music and the character designs. A JRPG that wasn't about the swords and elfs for once.

    @Vicviper

It could also get a Vita release. They could just split the screen in half

The first one was great but the battle mechanics in the 3rd chapter (I think) never really clicked and I kept losing almost every battle. It all got a bit frustrating then and in the end I never finished the game. Had a lot of fun until then though and the style was very appealing as well.

    what voice command?

TWEWY battle is combinung right arm in Stylus (touch screen), left arm in Directional Button (controling upper screen)

    what voice command?

My thoughts exactly. It was stylus in one hand, D-pad controls with the other. Such a great game to show friends over your shoulder and revel in their 'how the hell are you even playing that?!' faces.

8/10 is like 3 points too low. Shame on the review!

    Could work great on 3DS.

I'd like them to focus on new characters this time around. Neku's story is done, he and the lads are off doing their own thing. They've no need to get caugh up in any more supernatural nonsense; leave that to a new cast and focus on the setting and story.
