Warhammer 40k: Space Marine dated

Relic-developed shooter looms.

Intergalactic shooter Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine will lift off in August, THQ has confirmed.

The publisher refused to be any more specific but did reveal a little more about the game's story. As it turns out, you'll not only be defending your Imperial Forge World from a million-strong Ork army, but the forces of Chaos are also shopping for a scrap.

THQ insists that the inclusion of Chaos troops, as shown off in the screens below, will add a more strategic element to the gameplay, compared to the straightforward brute force that the Orks bring to the party.

The Relic-developed third person shooter launches on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Relic to be acknowledged by the console market?... quite likely

Awww Relic... Why pick Ultramarines? They're boooorrring...

I think Harlequins (for the uninformed, they're space elf ninja clowns, who, depending on the fluff, can also be pirates) would make a great hack'n slash character action game. A hollow tube you stab into a man, a wire comes out and uncoils, then rotorblades his insides into mush? Guns that can make every blood cell inside a man explode? Grenades that kill people by giving them bad acid trips? Yes, please.

I'm not much for action chop'em'up games, but I'm buying this title to support relic and the franchise :)

please please please be good. I've been wanting some 40k computer game action since I was 7 and that was 23 years ago.

"Intergalactic shooter"? What am I reading here, The Sun?
  • EatSchist #6 1 year ago

@jstar - Space Hulk Vengance of the Blood Angels sounds like the game you missed! Give us a cracking FPS shooter!! With Space Wolves!!
  • darkmorgado #7 1 year ago

    Yay!

Btw, for anyone wanting a cool space marine fix, the Ultramarines movie is actually pretty good. And it has John Hurt in it. John Hurt makes everything awesome.

Sad to say but for me THQ = suck. Happy to be proved wrong.
  • RabidChild #9 1 year ago

@Agiel7 - I always thought a harlequin-based Ninja Gaiden-style game would be awesome. Oh, and agreed on space smurfs - they're so dull!

I was extremely enthusiastic about this game back when it was still marketed as a 3rd person Action-RPG. Now? I'm more lukewarm, will definetly pick it up if it has split-screen coop.

Gotta love the Warhammer 40k setting though, and Relic developing doesn't hurt. Might still be worth a punt even it is a straight up shooter.

THQ may be shit but Relic are most definately not.

Easily one of the best devs around. Homeworld / DoW series are classic. However i'll refrain from going all out as this is there 1st foray into 3rd person.

If there is a God-emperor, he will make this game not suck.

I'm gonna buy this even though there are a ton of great games coming out by the end of the year because there isn't anything else that interests me that's coming out in the summer months.

I really hope this game is awesome. Further more, I hope we get the option of going purely melee like an Assault Space marine would, or better still, as an Assault terminator!
  • KDR_11k #15 1 year ago

Like Relic could bear making you fight only one faction in a WH40k game. They might just throw in some token Eldar for kicks.
  • GamesConnoisseur #16 1 year ago

Spilt screen co op would be a must buy if its to be the case.
  • Gizzle #17 1 year ago

Wouldn't mind a remake of Vengeance of the Blood Angels if you're looking for ideas relic. The achievement for the four terminators in the space hulk in DOWII made me all nostalgic for powerhouse processors like the Cyrix 586 and a monstrous 8 megs of RAM...

Can they make the Orks blood green please? Why is it red? And why, oh why pick Ultramarines when Dark Angels, Space Wolves, and Grey Knights exist? Legion of the Damned would have been cool to play too! but Ultramarines!??! FFS.

Oh well, I will still buy and play it, even if it scores a 7. Iv been waiting for a 40k shooter for my entire life, and the last attempt, Fire Warrior scarred me.

    Relic if your reading...

    - An FPS as a Space Wolf or Dark Angles captain...please make an FPS! And include a usable dreadnought. Also please can we fight (or control) some Eldar: with War walkers, screaming banshees, and hover tanks?? Im sick of Chaos and Orks being the only races to fight against.

    - A mode in DOWII (or entirely new game!) that turns it into an animated version of the board game. Basically I would love to play the turn-based rules of the board game (move or shoot with points per round: just like space hulk on the Amiga) rather than the real-time faff that DOWII adheres to. Also include every race with special characters, and a paint/customise your own factions menu (including importing decal PNGs), and I will send you my spleen in a box tied with a ribbon (including a thank you card and some chocolates).

btw great work on DOW, it is definitely a great game, I just wish there was a turn based option to replicate the board game. Real-time isnt for everyone.

I've been waiting a long time for this game...
  • Judas_Priest #20 1 year ago

Yeah, space hulk was epic, but also epicly hard. How the hell do genestealers, which are basically bugs, manage to kill a guy who's basically a walking tank? Anyway, I really just want to be able to rush into combat and say...

"SHOW ME WHAT PASSES FOR FURY AMOUNG YOUR MISSBEGOTTEN KIND!!!!!!!!"
  • gmjapan #21 1 year ago

Its Randy Couture! The orks got no chance!
  • SAMagic #22 1 year ago

    1. Ultramarines are often used because they're the "standard" SM chapter. New players will have enough to take on board without a distracting back story detailing their chapter - as much as I'd love to play as a member of the Death Company or a Dark Angel hunting down The Fallen...

    2. I really hope the plot isn't the usual "Stop marauding orks, then find out they've been manipulated by Chaos, fight the big Chaos leader and then a giant demon, The End". That's been WAY too overdone in 40K.

    3. An expansion or sequel where you play as Kaptin Bluddflagg gets my voted. Ya fancy tart with yer nice hat.

Always surprised at the lack of turn-based games in this franchise. Space Hulk and a DS one if I'm not mistaken. I love to see one in a Valkyria Chronicles style, but then again I'd also like to see another Valkyria Chronicles on a console :(

I expect Relic to deliver a very nice game here.
It's out in the same month as Deus Ex:)
