Why Crysis 2 has no Move support

Also, PlayStation 3 demo dated.

Crytek experimented with Move controls for the PlayStation 3 version of Crysis 2 but ditched the idea, judging it a poor fit for the gameplay, the FPS sequel's senior producer has revealed.

"It's clearly something we looked at," Hasit Zala told Eurogamer at an EA event in San Francisco today.

"We felt that in terms of what we were doing and the controls we needed, it didn't really lend itself to the kind of gameplay experience we were looking to achieve."

Zala added that Crytek hadn't ruled out incorporating motion controls into its games in the future, but he currently believes there is still work to be done before they can be succesfully incorporated in FPS gameplay.

"I think it's an interesting concept," he said, "but I don't think it's quite there yet. I can't think of too many first person shooters that are really embracing it at this point in time.

"There's definitely something there but also with shooter controls, the sighting, being able to change your modes and your armour and switch into stealth mode – that makes it difficult for us to work with it at the moment."

Elsewhere at the showcase, EA finally pinned down a 15th March PlayStation 3 date for the new multiplayer demo that hit PC and Xbox 360 today. Should you like what you see, you can get your hands on the full finished product from 25th March.

Fail. I'd specifically choose the PS3 version of this game over the 360 version if it had move controls.

    *looks at Killzone 3*

I don't think companies should have to justify why they're *not* using the Move. The game should either be designed around it, or without it, rather than adding functionality for the sake of it.
  • ianegg #5 1 year ago

Going from what's been quoted here, it's clearly something they haven't looked at.

I'll agree that "motion control" has limited use in shooters, but Move's pointer functionality is a huge boon on console shooters. I also seem to recall a radial menu controlled with the mouse on the PC version of Crysis for changing suit modes... I really fail to see his argument there.

Anyway, I thought Crytek were about the bleeding edge.

I think it's more about multiplat devs not wanting to do more than the bare minimum to get the game out across the systems.

    Three words crytek,
    Kill. Zone.Three.

PS3 demo 10 days before the release, cutting it a bit fine crytek!

15th of March for the PS3 Demo?? What's the point? (that's all I read this article for to find out when the demo is due) Rubbish!
  • PlugMonkey #11 1 year ago

@JJrabbit the move is a controller it's designed to be usable in a variety of different games,

I think you're missing the point. It can be used in a variety of games, but you want people to design and balance it for the platform from the ground up, rather than just bolt on support for it.

This is a big miss from crytek!!!! How can they say FPS`s havent embraced motion control when Killzone3 is out their doing exactly that.

Killzone 3's inplementation of move is nothing short of superb, it takes killzone from being a 9 to a 10 in my opinion, it adds that much. cant reccomend it enough.

Would definately have got this if it had move implementation, now its a case of waiting an seeing

Give Geurilla Games a call Crytek. There'll show you how it's done.
  • NotSoSlim #14 1 year ago

They look like idiots with Killzone out with Move controls. EG don't look much better either

Doesn't matter if a small amount if people may use it as gamers like options
  • ithis #15 1 year ago

I'll "get" it on PC then.
  • Drakhoran #16 1 year ago

How about an article about why Crysis 2 will only ship with DirectX 9?

  • Ryze #17 1 year ago

...also - it's missing right-analogue (and R3) equivalent controls for moving the viewpoint independently of the cursor, for more advanced players.

    FIXED.
  • Alf-Life #18 1 year ago

    Bollocks they looked into it
  • Bradach #19 1 year ago

Even if they did look into it, that was pre-KZ3. All FPS on PS3 going forward have no excuse not to use move now!

I'm not a violent person. I'm not one of those chaps that harbour dark thoughts. Nor do I enjoy posting nasty violent stuff, so just take this as a measure of the extreme frustration I feel:-

I'd like to take those Portal, CODBlOps, Bulletstorm and MoH developers, invite them to a conference and show them how Move is used in Killzone 3.

And then I'd like to take Move controllers and shove /stops himself.
  • Cappy #21 1 year ago

No motion controls in the 360 version is the more plausible explanation.

With the PS3 version trailing so far behind it's obviously the tail end of the project and a port. The real question is, what have they got to sell? On the PC they stand out, on the PS3, the Crysis 2 port looks pretty miserable.

If you're selling yourself on the strength of your technology, you'd at least need to compete with equivalent existing PS3 titles, they don't even seem to be trying. It's all about maximising returns for the least possible investment sadly.

I have to echo what most ppl have said, Killzone 3 works perfectly with move controls. Why come out and say it doesnt work when we all know it easily could have? They are just coming across as lazy

I don't think it's fair to use the argument of Move in Killzone 3 vs. its absence in Crysis 2.
One is an exclusive with unlimited resources provided by Sony, and the other is a 3 platform development.
What would happen if they implement move in Crysis, and the results are not as stand out as in Killzone?
I am sure PS3 gamers would also complain about that and Crysis would get plenty of negative press because of lackluster results.

If the developers did not feel confident about implementing Move, I don't see the problem. It's their decision and the number of games sold will be their judge.

"Why xxxx game doesn't have move support"

Because not all new games need to have it?
  • Rack #25 1 year ago

I can't fathom why it's not in Bulletstorm, but here I think it makes sense. Crysis is a very different game to Killzone 3, it's way more open and not so much about being a weapons platform. Move wouldn't really add to the experience with you constantly having to fiddle about to turn around. If it was included a load of people would assume it's the best system and then complain that the gameplay felt wrong somehow.
  • JJrabbit #26 1 year ago

@doomed_soul89 - Crysis is a multiplatform game, so it's not going to be designed with Move or Kinect in mind. By your logic, pretty much every PS3 game should use the Move, because it can. The point is, if you try and force Move to work with an existing system, then it's not going to be very good. Therefore, the developers need to decided whether it's worth investing time and money (which can lead to delays) on tacking on something just because it's there.
  • apoc_reg #27 1 year ago

Well their loss, Killzone 3 is a blast with move.

DOes it make me better? There are pros and cons but its fun so thats all i care about!!
  • JJrabbit #28 1 year ago

@doomed_soul89 - I specifically said "Crysis is a multiplatform game". Killzone 3 is a platform exclusive and that makes a massive difference in development time. I'm guessing the publishers want to push out the console titles in similar time frames for logistical and marketing reasons, so causing delays because of a bolt-on of Move wouldn't be in their interest. Also, KZ3 is a first party title, so they would be more experienced with development of Move (or at least have access to Sony's Move support team).
