EA Store confirms Mass Effect 3

Save Earth from "terrifying machines".

Oops. Someone is about to get hauled in front of HR. The EA Store has seemingly just ended weeks of speculation and confirmed the existence of Mass Effect 3.

A product listing on EA's online shop spotted by Joystiq showed Mass Effect 3 as clear as day, along with a descriptive blurb that read: "Earth is burning. Striking from beyond known space, a race of terrifying machines have begun their destruction of the human race.

"As Commander Shepard, an Alliance Marine, your only hope for saving mankind is to rally the civilizations of the galaxy and launch one final mission to take back the Earth."

The listing, which unsurprisingly has since been yanked, offered no further information other than that BioWare's new game will be heading to PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

So, that could be that then. Finally an end to all those increasingly tiresome Facebook teases. Look out for a full reveal tomorrow at the Spike VGA event in Los Angeles.

I expect that those Facebook teases will now reveal a sad face, with the line "you already know, so why are you here?"
  • Xardan #2 1 year ago

    cant f*cking wait!

I'm glad the reveal has been ruined, it had just got tiresome. It was hardly ilovebees. Hope they learn not to drag it out so long next time.
  • TheJuriel #5 1 year ago

    What, this needed confirming?
  • HisDudness #6 1 year ago

Hehe the only thing that kept people in the dark was the notion that ME3 was too fucking obvious to waste a convoluted reveal schedule on.

From the makers of Mass Effect... comes a NEW Mass Effect!
  • hiddenranbir #7 1 year ago

Ugh, so same formula? The FINAL mission!

So...the galaxy will be at a standstill while you do what you did in 2 but now with entire civilizations. I'm sort of chuffed I figured this from the way DA and ME2 were similar in what they did.

Still, will be a rather good movie-romp. Just hope it doesn't have too much game play which interrupts the pacing of the narrative.
  • kupocake #8 1 year ago

"From the makers of Mass Effect... comes a NEW Mass Effect!"

    Nah, you mean:

"From the makers of Mass Effect 2, the game that explicitly tells you there will be a Mass Effect 3... comes Mass Effect 3!"
  • Pumpatron #9 1 year ago

But we already know Mass Effect 3 is coming out, what was the point of all these teasers for a game we already know about?

Or am I missing something? I am quite stupid.
  • Lusterpurge #10 1 year ago

The point was that the marketing team was desperately trying to hype up the game which I doubt needs any hyping up.
  • Syrette #11 1 year ago

"The EA Store has seemingly just ended weeks of speculation and confirmed the existence of Mass Effect 3."

What speculation? We all knew this was in development.
  • Augmentation #12 1 year ago

There was never any question of whether or not Mass Effect 3 will be released. The teasers Bioware has been releasing could still be another game.
  • Golgo #13 1 year ago

  • intpleeus #14 1 year ago

Hold the phone! Do you mean to say Mass Effect is a trilogy?
  • hiddenranbir #15 1 year ago

I don't see how Bioware would think that we would think it was any other game.

They're doing DA2, ME3, SWTOR -and- took over that warhammer thing? I'd have been amazed if they had managed to spread out and reveal another game that was ready to be revealed at this point.
  • penhalion #16 1 year ago

I'm suprised the blurb didn't finish with "Oh and you die in the end just when you think you've won"
  • coolbritannia #17 1 year ago

putting the rifle from Mass Effect into the trailer was also a bit of an own goal.

  • Shikasama #20 1 year ago

How was it 'weeks of speculation'? Mass Effect was confirmed as a trilogy years ago.
  • dylman #21 1 year ago

Indeed, Mass Effect has been marketed and sold as a trilogy since the very beginning.
  • metalangel #22 1 year ago

Each planet you visit has to be downloaded separately as paid DLC! Preorder Dragon Arse 2 and get a code to access an exclusive suit of armour in Ass Effect 3, which is only slightly better than the very lowest level shit you start the game with! An "unlock everything" speedpack will be available on launch!
  • The-Bodybuilder #23 1 year ago

    it's not ME3, it's not ME3, it's not ME3, it's not ME3...

    oh, it is ME3.

    Save Earth from "terrifying machines"

Thats right boys and girls, Kinect is going to go all Terminator/Matrix/generic sci-fi cliche on us . . .

Its watching us right now, gathering all the intel it needs . . .

  • Climhazzard #25 1 year ago

I need my fix, cannot wait for this game. Should be fantastic as long as they dont waste time trying to implement multiplayer. Make a separate game for that please.
  • Stratix #26 1 year ago

Hot damn! That sounds like some sort of suicide mission...
  • mushroomyakuza #27 1 year ago

Cynicism aside, I hope this game doesn't solely take place on Earth...that's why we have Halo.

The best part of ME has always been the galaxy exploring, Citadel, race relations and mythology. I really don't want them to trade all that for a crappy Earth-saving last battle compensated with unnecessary multiplayer...don't fuck it up BioWare.
  • jackdoe #28 1 year ago

Hm. Simultaneous release across all three platforms. The timed exclusivity of the second game must have been part of the prior contract that Bioware had with Microsoft because that most definitely cost EA and Bioware a chunk of profits for the PS3 version.

Anywho, I expect the only real decision to have any impact from the first game on the third game is the Rachni and the council. But that may just take the form of a conversation.
  • Jamiesan #29 1 year ago

If the clues really have been pointing to ME3, I'll be surprised.

I hope this game doesn't solely take place on Earth...that's why we have Halo.
You do know that the words "Halo" and "Reach" both refer to worlds other than Earth? Technically, the second half of Halo 3 is set further away from Earth than Shepard has ever been so far.

I agree with the point about the whole multi-cultural politics being one of ME's strong points. I was quite disappointed that we couldn't explore the ME1 Citadel areas in ME2. I was also disappointed in the way aliens perceived humans in my ME2 playthrough - it seems that everyone just does what humans say, because of [insert ME1 moral choice] - when in ME1 they made it perfectly clear that humans would be perceived as newbs of the galaxy for many more decades.
Apart from that, bloody great game, can't wait for 3!

Why are people so suprised of the role of earth? It's been on the cards since the beginning.
-It's the only major races world we haven't been to (other than seeing it from the moon)
-The role of humans and the protheans
-the reapers infatuation with shepherd and humans
-It's not gonna be "earth" as we know it.
-Not everything will be based on earth.

    Trust bioware.
  • MadCaddy13 #36 1 year ago

Woooooo! Gonna be one hell of an emotional game. Do NOT wanna see the end of this game. Would love to see some spin offs or prequels. I dunno something that takes you to the rachni or krogan wars. Or even the war in akuze!!
  • Genji #37 1 year ago

I'd like to see the return of some of the crew. Although I don't know how that could happen, given some of the things that could happen in Mass Effect 2.
  • BuddyChrist #38 1 year ago

Next reveal. You can use the same ruddy character throughout?!??

Mass effect trilogy backwards compatability multi-ending shocker!

(loading screen on 3: "you can carry your pet over to mass effect 4)
  • Soton4084 #39 1 year ago

I'm actually quite excited about the possibility of the Earth being in ME 3. As others have touched upon, it does make a lot of sense to make humanity's home planet a key location in the finale of the trilogy. The UK would be a good location if the rumours are true and it would be fascinating to see Bioware's version of a futuristic London.
  • Kerome #40 1 year ago

I'd be surprised if this makes it out before Xmas next year... Bit of a strange way to announce product tho, eh, EA?
  • yoomazir #41 1 year ago

I hope it's not going to be a disapointment like ME2 turned out to be.
  • icematt12 #42 1 year ago

Sounds awesome. Though I would guess that the "terrifying machines" Reapers and their minions may be on more planets then Earth, just Earth would be a priority target and thus harder for the Citadel forces to get to and liberate. Sounds quite similar to ME2, get your allies and prepare them before launching an attack.

Now I just have to hope for Liara to be a significant character and the only MP, if there has to be one, being co-op playing rebels on Earth.
  • RESIDENT_nEVILe #43 1 year ago

Wish list for Mass Effect 3:

    - No more stupid fucking end of mission/level score screens that pull you out of the game.
    - More John Carpenter-esque synth music, á la Mass Effect 1.
    - More planets to mine - make it mandatory and put a time limit on each planet so you really have damage your hands.

Hopefully, resources are utterly stripped out this time; you're saving a world, not piloting Red Dwarf.

So all those hints about a cold war spy thriller set in London were just to see if it was possible to make the announcement of ME3 disappointing?
  • NewbieZilla #48 1 year ago

"Hey guys, big announcement. New game. There will be a third game in that trilogy."

"confirmed the existence of Mass Effect 3. "

It is and was well known that there will be a ME3. It was always penciled-in as a trilogy.
  • UKLL #51 1 year ago

Can't wait for this, ME2 was easily my game of the year.
  • Rubbish_Russ #52 1 year ago

Wait. What? So all this teasing, speculation and border-line-arguing with people on this here forum about what will be announced has all led up to it being ME3!?! but we knew that was coming! What a giant waste of time. I have more questions over when the next Bond film will happen than anything about ME3. Damn you crazy marketing wizards! ::shakes fist:::
  • Collymilad #53 1 year ago

    @Drunken dragon

I'm sure EA will be so bothered about one idiots lost sale.
  • Ninja_Tino #54 1 year ago

The joined forces of the Citadel taking down only one (couldn't fathom the 'spoiler' tag, but fans will know what I'm referring too ((don't want to spoil anything for the ps3 crowd, even if they will only be experiencing it in a comic)) ) was tough enough. Not a clue how they're going to bring down ALL of them. I seriously cannot wait for ME3. This, Uncharted 3, Half-Life 3... well, this and U3 alone are going to make for a great year of gaming. I hope this nicely closes the trilogy and doesn't leave plot threads hanging. I'd be thrilled if they continue the Mass Effect franchise in spin-off games (there's a heap of genres they could utilise) but I want Shephard's story to come to a fitting close.

The surprise isn't the game, but the fact it's coming to PS3 on release day. I expected a year long 360 timed console exclusive.
  • septimus #56 1 year ago

Going to be amazing, but why the fuck did it need confirmation and a yanked one at that? We all knew it was a trilogy.

If it were you who missed the 1st ME because some idiot thought it would b shit not to bring it out on ps3 would you have been interested in 2 n 3? I don't think so IDIOT
  • rivuzu #60 1 year ago

You know, from the teasers I'd really hoped it was a James Pond game. This is something of an... awkward disappointment. Mostly because I've never played any Mass Effect games. I think I might be missing a trick or two here...

Though, I personally think BioWare need to revisit Jade Empire. I adored that game to death. It was bloody amazing.
