Rage: Mutant Bash TV due tomorrow

id Software iPhones it in.

On-rails iPhone shooter Rage: Mutant Bash TV will be available on the App Store tomorrow, developer id Software has revealed.

id bossman John Carmack tweeted, "Rage mobile has been approved, it should be on the app store tomorrow morning!"

Spinning-off from id's much anticipated Rage shooter, Mutant Bash TV does pretty much what it says on the tin. You're tasked with clobbering various uglies in a TV show format.

Carmack lifted the lid on the game earlier this month explaining, "Many of the elements that made Doom Resurrection good the first time you played it hurt the replayability, for instance. Rage iOS is all action, all the time.

"I have played the game dozens of times, and testing it is still fun instead of a chore."

Sounds good to us, especially considering the asking price. It'll set you back £0.59 for the SD version or £1.19 for the HD version.

Rage proper is due next year on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Eurogamer's Tom Bramwell went hands-on with the gruesome shooter back in August.

HD is a universal app but only for iPhone 4 or iPad.

Not particularly hard to fathom, but still needlessly confusing. Why not just one app?

The HD version is spposedly about 200mb bigger than the regular version, I guess that's why there are two versions. Makes sense if you only have an older generation phone.

If there was only one app Carmack has said he would have to develop for the lowest common denominator. He is aiming for mega textures and 60fps on the game which he can only do on the iPad and iPhone 4 due to the higher RAM they have.

As an iPhone owner I'm glad they have done it this way so I gwet the game looking and running the best it can but I can see how it would be annoying for pre iPhone users.

So how does the SD/HD thing break down? The 3GS and 3rd-gen iPod have about the same graphical capabilities and RAM as the iPad and 4th-gen iPod, just slower CPUs which wouldn't make any difference to the file size. Only the iPhone 4 has extra RAM. Is that the only HD format, or are users of the older bit still capable iOS devices being lumbered with weaker textures, when they should be able to cope fine with anti-aliased visuals instead of high-res ones?

The descriptions on the app store don't help! So as a 3rd-gen iPod owner, do I go for the HD version which should run just as Epic Citadel did, or the standard one which may be a drop back to the 128MB OpenGL ES 1 devices?
