Reeves: Expect Kinect, Move in next-gen

MS and Sony "have to" - Capcom EU boss.

Microsoft and Sony will incorporate motion-sensing add-ons Kinect and Move into the next generation of consoles – indeed they "have to".

That's the prediction of Capcom Europe boss David Reeves – and his prediction is as good as any. Reeves used to be in charge of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

"I think [motion control is] the preamble to what might come in the next static consoles. I don't know when they will arrive. That different way of controlling a game, either with your hand and feet or your voice, or even maybe just your eyes..." he said.

"I think it will extend the life of the static consoles a little bit. But it will roll into - there's so much investment in those systems, they'll have to use it for the next static consoles as well. Or a modification. They'll learn a lot from this."

Both Microsoft and Sony have refused to comment on the next generation of consoles.

Microsoft reckons Kinect – released in the UK this week – will extend the life of the Xbox 360 by five years.

Sony has consistently trumpeted its 10-year life cycle plan for the PlayStation 3.

But now, some five years into the current generation, next-gen questions are being asked.

In the short term, however, Reeves sees big gains for the PS3, medium gains for the Xbox 360 and the end for the Nintendo Wii.

"The PS3 will grow massively, especially outside the frontline markets in Europe," he said. "Xbox 360 will continue to grow and Wii, unfortunately, I see coming down - as it is now, quite rapidly.

"Unless they come up with some really good, innovative software with a very strong IP, I think they're going to struggle. It's the life cycle, isn't it?"

    We don't need new consoles.

Wii was betrayed by 3rd parties :(

If they didn't just publish shit on it, and instead focused on making excellent games, the Wii would have had a lot more life left in it.

But only Nintendo made good games for the Wii (some of the best games of all time mind you).

3rd parties can only make prettier games, and have trouble thinking outside the box.
  • Anciegher #4 2 years ago

@sfp_noodle we definately need a new nintendo console. MS and Sony could wait till 2013 but nintendo....not so much.
  • Lexx87 #5 2 years ago

I have so much to play at the moment I need another 5 fricken years just to finish everything.
  • sfp_noodle #6 2 years ago

    @Anciegher

Agreed. Although with Kinect and Move out, I think they'll struggle to sell their console if its just a Wii HD.

Shock horror ex sony exec say playstation will gain :-)
  • Sabreman64 #8 2 years ago

I think he's right about the three current consoles. Until a few months ago, I would have said the Wii was a cert to win this generation. But now I think the Wii will be dead in a year or two, and in the long run, the PS3 will win this gen, with the 360 second and the Wii third.

As far as motion sensing gaming is concerned, I sincerely hope motion sensing dies this gen. The Wii is currently dying, as people grow tired of the fad that is waggling their Wii remotes. With any luck, Kinect and Move will also be dead in a couple of years' time, once the casual gamers all grow tired of those fads too. Then, by the time the next gen comes around, we can get back to proper gaming with none of this casual waggling shovelware crap clogging up the shop shelves.
  • firef7y #9 2 years ago

Well duh, they've invested so much they can't afford not to. Besides this is now the main difference between games on the two consoles.
  • Vyggo #10 2 years ago

Serious question, why do people think Playstation 3 will eventually come out on top? Is it the bluray?

The vitality sensor will extend Wii's lifespan by five years.
  • Loghorn #12 2 years ago

@Sabreman64: I totally agree with you. Kinect (& probably Move) may be popular for right now, but will anyone give two cents about them in another year or two down the road?

Motion controls are a tired gimmick now. I seriously doubt that Kinect & Move will extend the life of both PS3 & 360 for another 5 years. Plus even if both Kinect & Move becomes implemented for the next PS & XBox consoles, most people aren't going to care about them, because they've already played them before.

I'll hold off getting kinect/move until next gen then.

Actually probably just move - msoft can go jump after the unreliableness of my 360.
  • Farzlepot #14 2 years ago

To be fair even if the Wii dies tomorrow, and nobody ever buys another, it'll still take quite a while for the other two consoles to catch it up in raw hardware sales.
  • smelly #15 2 years ago

In meantime - nintendo will move onto their next new thing... Microsoft/Sony will scoff at them again - then copy 4 years later.
  • jamhead #16 2 years ago

If I were Nintendo, and knew MS and Sony weren't going to bring out new consoles for another 5 years, I would release a Wii HD, pronto, that could easily trounce both consoles in sheer grunt for around £200 or so (which surely must be possible vs 5 yr old tech).

Suddenly MS and Sony would be the poor cousins in multiplatform games and the new Wii would have a good 3 more years of gobsmacking sales, until the Sony and MS marketing machines got into motion.

Seriously, someone has to get in there (maybe time for Sega to re-launch their hardware division)...?
  • smelly #17 2 years ago

@jamhead - but what does "HD" actually add to a game?

Having more pixels on screen doesnt automatically make a game better...
  • man.the.king #18 2 years ago

    @smelly

"Having more pixels on screen doesnt automatically make a game better... "

It doesn't...but it certainly helps, especially in the immersion.
  • smelly #19 2 years ago

    >especially in the immersion.

I certainly disagree with that. But then im the sort of person who doesnt really descern any noticable improvment from watching movies in HD either.

I bought into the hype and bought a 52" 1080p tv.. but usually watch most my films on dvd as its cheaper and the extra pixels do nothing to improve film for me - lol
  • drhickman1983 #20 2 years ago

Getting off topic slightly I do share Smellys view slightly. games in HD look great, but I can't honestly say the extra pixels make me feel more immersed.

Strangely, when I played on my 360 on my dad's standard def CRT, I actually felt some games looked better. Whilst the state of affairs is improving, in the past I've found CRT's gave a much better colour balance than all but the best HD LCD tvs, which are generally out of my budget.

On topic, I can't say I'm suprised at this preditcion. As long as somebody continues to support "standard" controller games, which I'm sure somebody will, I don't feel strongly either way.

Welcome to the day proper gaming died.

It's sad, but in a few years looks like the only place you'll be able to get a decent game is the PC.

As far as consoles go, welcome to lowest common denominator gaming! Hells yeah.

    :|

@smelly - get some new material, it's not 2008 anymore. Seriously, tired.

    @Smeiily

While I do kind of agree in that HD hasn't ever had the impact it was supposed to, I think there is more benefit to be had in games - a consistent 60fps and a pin-sharp picture are things people do care about. I just bought black ops for my 360 not my PS3 because the face off suggested that there was a notable performance difference.

A new console at this stage could put in considerably larger differences than those without being expensive. I'm not a total graphics whore - Super Mario Galaxy 2 is possibly my game of the year. That said,. I am interested in PC like performance and console like convenience. I'm also interested in what 3D could bring, and the current gen seem like they might struggle with 3D and decent frame rates.

Turned into more of a whine than I mean it to be - but who here doesn't like the excitement of a new console release? ;-)
  • Sabreman64 #23 2 years ago

ZeroAX, wasn't there an article in Games magazine a couple of months ago about third party games on the Wii? I think the problem is that quality core third party Wii games (eg Zack & Wiki, Little King Story, Dead Space Extraction) don't sell. Unfortunately, the third party casual shovelware does sell well on the Wii, and so publishers continue to churn out the shovelware.

What if Kinect and Move end up going the same way as the Wii, with quality core third party games not selling, and third party shovelware selling well?

If they were to pack-in their motion sensing gear, there wouldnt be enough margin left to actually make the consoles next gen. Since when do they give more than just one pad?

Besides: why sell a fancy doohickey with your console when you can charge a bunch of cash for it later?
  • Miths #25 2 years ago

"Motion controls are a tired gimmick now"

What is with people and their random throwing around the word gimmick? If a technology can substantially, or for that matter even just slightly enhance some (not all, some) experiences - and in my opinion that definitely applies to motion controls (my only experiences have been with Move so far) as well as the much hated 3D - how does it deserve to be branded a gimmick?
  • originaljohn #26 2 years ago

Shocked at how people can be so blind! People who dislike the 'motion control fad' get over it. Nintendo have shown this gen that motion controls sell in big numbers the proof is in their hardware unit sales and down to the fact that bot sony and microsoft are copying them. Motion controls are here to stay in one form or another, why? Because they have a large enough audience.
People should be happy that the industry has expanded the way it has instead of completely crash out.
  • Shakey_Jake33 #27 2 years ago

    "Static consoles"?
  • Loghorn #28 2 years ago

@Miths & @originaljohn: I'm just pointing out my theory of what will happen in the near future. Most people aren't going to care for motion controls anymore after this gen. In about 4-5 years from now, people that purchased either the Wii, Move, &/or Kinect are going to be looking back at those & will be saying, "What the hell was I (or "were we";) thinking of making this gimmick popular?"

People are going to want something new, & just motion controls isn't going to cut it. It's already old & worn out now. Plus the only reason why the Wii succeeded is because of the cheaper price & the demographic of the console being catered to casuals/non-gamers. Sorry if the truth hurts.
  • callum9999 #29 2 years ago

smelly - Well it's obvious that for the vast majority of people, more detail is better. While it may not necessarily improve the experience (depends on it's quality), the majority would prefer it. Hence why big tv's and the cinema are more popular than black and white portables...

  • White_Waffle #31 2 years ago

more power does not only increase framerate and resolution. you can't do a game like COD 1:1 with just lower resolution and 30fps on the wii - there are limitations to texture size and polygon count, game physics and so on. Nintendos games do quite well with their non realistic approach to graphics but the hardware limitations affect other areas aswell.

That said, enjoy their good games.

I hope they don't switch to motion controls without pad. There are some great games that work excellent with a pad. But then i am one of those who prefered Resi 4 on Gamecube/PS2 over the Wii edition.
