Castlevania Collector's Ed pulled – GAME

UPDATE: GAME changes its mind.

UPDATE 2: GAME's changed its mind and confirmed the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Collector's Edition will be released in the UK, but after the standard edition.

A GAME spokesperson said: "We're sorry. The tweet was a mistake. We're working with Konami to finalise all the details of the Collector's Edition and we'll let everyone know what they are as soon as they are confirmed.

Eurogamer was told that a release date could be announced today or tomorrow.

UPDATE 1: Konami has just told Eurogamer that the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Collector's Edition "has not been cancelled but is going to be out later than the 8th".

ORIGINAL STORY: The Collector's Edition of excellent action game Castlevania: Lords of Shadow has been cancelled at the last minute by publisher Konami, GAME has claimed.

"Castlevania fans! Lords of Shadow Collector's Ed has been pulled by the publisher and is no longer happening," reads a tweet from GAME's official Twitter account.

The Collector's Edition includes the official soundtrack and a replica God Mask.

We're trying to get to the bottom of this now.

Lords of Shadow, out this Friday, is a 3D reboot of the classic 2D vampire action platformer. Christian Donlan awarded it an impressive 8/10, describing it as "a polished and enjoyable blast of musty Gothic action".

Surely this went gold weeks ago? Why suddenly pull it now? I hope that doesn't mean that the poor folk who preordered ages back won't get to play it come launch.

    /hasn't preordered.

I don't remember there ever being a CE for the EU at least or any mention of one by the big K - tin foil hat moment but I think GAME may be backtracking on assumtions that there was one, it's not the first time they've claimed something to exstist and then not.

TBH do we need a CE for every game? No. Will this sell any less without one? Certinally not, the CV alone will sell itself.

Update: Yea I found them talking about the mask version for the EU, it's looking likely it's been pulled due to them not likely the final product of the mask - they REALLY wanted it to be good, but they havn't really talked it up as much as the game, otherwise I'd certainlly would have pre-ordered it or the UK simply isn't getting it.

Another thing discussed at the press conference was the collector's edition version of the game which comes with a soundtrack and a mask -- in Europe, at least. The North American version of the collector's edition will come with an art book instead of the mask. I got to check out the mask that will be in the European version and it's quite cool -- very detailed and it has a lot of weight to it. Doesn't feel cheap.

There is a EU LE version of the game, I remember reading a while back that the UK simply isn't getting any. The real question is, why the hell did it take GAME so long to sort this out? Surely they would have gotten some word from their suppliers before hand?

The collector's edition hasn't been pulled, it's merely been delayed
  • LR100 #5 2 years ago

I never even saw it listed and I check the site at least once a week for this sort of thing (I hate it when GAME get an exclusive, always means paying full price).
  • WinterSnowblind #6 2 years ago

The CE definitely does exist, there's even pictures of it, mask and all. They originally said that there was a production problem and it had been "delayed". But it wouldn't make much sense to release a collectors edition AFTER the game was released.. This was inevitable.

And a shame, as it was the only thing that would have made me pay full price for the game.

In the EG thread, I posted a link to a listing on Gamestop Italy, for the CE. It's dated to ship a couple of weeks after the standard edition (out this week, like the rest of the EU), so it's been suggested that perhaps the UK will follow suit.

@Konami: flitter across to Twitter, and set the record straight? It's always better to know the company line on these things, asap, even if it is just that they're making enquiries, and will update later.

No overpriced collector's edition for the UK?! GeeMacca will be crying in to his imaginary girlfriend's arms!

    Bah! 2.5D castlevania FTW!

What is the point of pulling a collectors edition? The kind of person that would buy one is the kind of person thats thats getting the game on day 1 and cant wait
  • Lee_Morris #11 2 years ago

Don't listen to GAME Eurogamer. It's been know for a while that the collector's edition is going to be available later. Possibly at the end of October. David Cox tweeted the info last week.

I heard it was because the God mask wasn't lifelike.

Sometimes it amazes me how compelling it is to watch something i don't really care about unfold in real time.

Does anyone know when Digital Foundry comes with the comparison? Because every frame counts with such a low framerate...if the 360 is messed up, ill buy a ps3 instead.
  • DarkMoon #17 2 years ago

A mask? Well, I won't be missing out much then. Too bad tho' GAME I wanted to buy a CE but since there's none for europe, I'll settle for the plain vanilla version. Which has already been despatched. Which i'll be able to play by the end of the week. but seriously, a CE being sold AFTER the release date? LOL

p.s-who decides what goes into these CE's? I'd rather have the artbook than the mask.
  • Machetazo #18 2 years ago

Nine times out of ten, I'd prioritise the artbook. Unless, the item in question has some kind of strong resonance with existing fans of the series, the artbook's bound to hold higher value to fans buying day one. Then, again, GAME's bonuses have been on a downward curve in terms of worth, lately.
  • Der_tolle_Emil #19 2 years ago

The one game (or series) which I would buy for the soundtrack alone.
  • Cjail #20 2 years ago

In my opinion artbooks should also be sold separately.
