Castlevania Facebook game unveiled

Unlock extra items, screenshots and so on.

Konami is launching a Facebook application to tie-in with PS3 and Xbox 360 title Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.

The app will ask you to swear allegiance to the God Mask of the Brotherhood of Light or the Devil Mask of the Lords of Shadow. Then you can fight alongside and against friends in a virtual arena.

This involves taunting and inflicting damage on opponents, earning experience points and virally recruiting friends to your army. You can thereby unlock Castlevania: LOS screenshots, videos and special items.

The app features leaderboards, a built-in save system and, tech fans, a modular, Flash-based, PHP SDK design framework.

Fancy having a go? Head on over to Facebook.com/Castlevaniachallenge to get involved. Alternatively you might like to read our recent review of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, which is out on Friday.

I got tired of facebook games a couple of years ago, but I think this is pretty nifty marketing that should create public awareness for many more weeks than your average advertisement campaign, and is also more fun. On that premise alone I might add it to my facebook page.

Just tried it out. It's pretty basic, based around hitting your character with lightning to earn experience, with more weapons (and presumably characters) unlocking as you level up and recruit more people from your friends list. Some of the unlockable bits are nice, like the trailers and stuff. Nice music too (though gets repetitive).

All in all, not bad. It's hardly going to worry farmville but it's a neat little marketing tool.
