Sony apologises for PS3 firmware woe

New version of 3.41 released.

Sony has apologised after PlayStation 3 owners complained that the latest firmware update caused consoles to stop working.

Sony today made available a new version that it said fixes the problem.

"If you are experiencing such symptoms when replacing the HDD of your PS3 system, we kindly ask you to use the latest data and try again. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused, and appreciate your understanding and continued support," wrote SCEE blog manager James Gallagher on the EU PlayStation Blog.

"For any other questions, please contact your local customer service."

Last week gamers reported that the software update 3.41, released on 27th July, was causing the update to stop and their consoles to freeze.

Gamers on the official EU and US PlayStation forums didn't hold back.

"First of I would like to thank Sony for breaking my PS3," shouty PS3 owner Sk Croza95 wrote.

"When I got the install for firmware 3.41 it got to 99 per cent then froze, then shut off and attempted to install the software. Again it did the same thing. It restarted again but to my surprise where it has the writing saying, 'Installing software. Do not turn off system,' ALL the writing had gone.

"All I could see was the green bar and THAT'S IT.

"I called Sony and they said my PS3 is broke and I need to pay £130 for a repair."

"My PS3 got a YLOD like 1 hr later when I was playing MAG, but I don't know if it was to do with the update. I'm gonna have to get a replacement," wrote sebastian600.

Poster gary_dunphy said: "I'm not happy as everything was working before the update and now whenever I load up the PS3 it crashes and loses all power."

The update was intended to add video recommendations to the PlayStation Store.

Video and game recommendations are offered in a "You May Like" menu on the right hand side of the PlayStation Store menu.
