PS3 overtakes Wii in Japan

Is the tide finally turning?

The PlayStation 3 has overtaken the Wii's 2010 sales total in Japan – the first time it has taken an annual sales lead since either console launched.

Media Create figures released this week show that the PlayStation 3 has shifted 1,017,094 units during 2010, compared to the Wii's 1,015,513.

This follows news that the Wii is losing its lead to the Xbox 360 in the USA. It's likely to finish second in the console race there this year too.

So, after years on top, has the Wii finally peaked? It must nearly be time for the Wii 2, no? Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata isn't saying anything.
