Ghost of Tsushima - The Ghost of Yarikawa: how to beat the General Temuge boss fight

How to fight back the Mongols and their General Temuge from Yarikawa Stronghold.

The Ghost of Yarikawa is a lengthier, action-filled main quest about mid way through Ghost of Tsushima's story, featuring one of the game's few proper boss fights.

With that in mind, below we'll detail all the key points of the mission and how to complete them, as well as specifically how to beat General Temuge in Ghost of Tsushima's Ghost of Yarikawa.

After starting the mission by meeting Yuna up the top of the main tower in Yarikawa, you'll have a pleasant cutscene and then, at last the time for battle arrives. We recommend wearing the Samurai Clan Armour, or similar heavy combat-focused armour, here - it's a good all-round one that'll keep you well protected against large numbers of Mongols.

Defend the main gate

Head down to the main gate by following the waypoint, and the Mongols will break through. Time to fight! Defeat all of the enemies by any means necessary.

Defend the northern gate

After defeating that first wave, turn right and head to the northern gate nearby, where there's another, larger wave pouring in. Again, take them down however you prefer - remember to use your items like Kunai and sticky bombs to do some crowd control if things get a bit much.

Reach the Mongol siege weapons

After that second wave's dealt with, you need to go on the offensive yourself, as the Mongols are using siege weapons to break through the defences.

You need to destroy those weapons yourself - there are large numbers of Mongols between you and them, up on the distant hill, but you can actually just run past all of them and ignore them if you like, going straight up the hill you came down during the earlier Walls of Yarikawa mission.

Disable the Mongol siege weapons

At the top of the hill there's another cluster of Mongols defending the weapons. Take them down first.

Then, just go up to the two siege weapons one at a time and press R2 when prompted to disable them.

Return to the Yarikawa Stronghold

Unfortunately, your work with the siege weapons was too late - the Mongols have already broken through. Head back down through the camp - again, you can attack or just run past the enemies - to re-enter the stronghold.

The way in is across the fallen bridge - on the left of it there's an extended plank where the bridge would've been, which you can hop across.

Reach the Steward's Keep

Fight your way through the enemies inside - no need for stealth - until you reach the waypoint at the closed gate to the main keep. Prepare yourself!

On re-entering the steward's keep, a boss fight begins against the Mongol leader General Temuge.

This is one of the more varied bossfights - Temuge has a shield and a flaming sword, as opposed to the usual katana of most duels - so you'll need to concentrate.

Start by switching to Water Stance, which is most effective against shield-using enemies.

Be ready to dodge. Temuge's flaming sword will chip away at your health with alarming speed if you let yourself get it, so its harder to just shrug off the occasional attack. If you do get hit, tap Circle twice to dodge-roll, which extinguishes the fire.

Temuge's heavy unblockable attacks tend to come in threes, so be ready to dodge three times when you see that red marker to warn you.

As with most duels, getting to the side of him helps - short dodges sideways allow you to get round his defences and attacks, creating space for some good heavy attacks to chip down his guard, which is ultimately your goal.

Likewise, the usual rules for duels apply here: no Kunai and other items, and there are moments where your blades will lock and you get a bit of extra Resolve for a heal if you need it.

When he goes down, there's a rather tasty moment that we won't spoil, but your next objective is to drive the Mongols from the stronghold.

It's simple enough, chase them down and wipe them out. When you reach the exterior bridge, the mission will come to a close. Nicely done, samurai.
