Final Fantasy Type-0 sequel in the works

PlayStation Portable game Final Fantasy Type-0 is still without a confirmed western release, but that hasn't stopped Square Enix from beginning work on a sequel.

Producer Hajime Tabata told Famitsu (via Andriasang) a "framework" for a sequel in the Type subseries "is already being worked on".

Sales of the PlayStation Portable spin-off were "very good", Tabata said. It topped the Japanese charts following its late October launch, shifting nearly half a million copies. Tabata said for the first entry in a new series, the game received a good response.

The 3rd Birthday

The 3rd Birthday

Three and uneasy.

For the survival horror hardcore, a new Parasite Eve game has been a long time coming 11 years, if you haven't been keeping up. Well, you can keep waiting, because The 3rd Birthday bears very little relation to the series that provides the game's sighing, whimpering lead character, Aya Brea. No wonder Square Enix has positioned it as a spin-off.

On the plus side, you can dive into The 3rd Birthday's intertwining narrative without feeling like you've missed anything: you really haven't. For Aya Brea's part, she couldn't fill you in on what happened anyway. She wakes up in a blood-soaked wedding dress in 2010 without a single memory of what came before, or why she can transfer her soul from body to body. Maybe someone played Especially For You as the first dance music by mistake.

With this 'Overdrive' ability, Brea subsequently becomes an essential part of the Counter Twisted Investigation's fight against the towering 'Babel' roots that inexplicably burst out from underneath Manhattan a couple of years later. As a seemingly unending army of Twisted organisms starts spawning, aiming to take down snivelling humanity, she finds herself embroiled in a nightmarish, body-surfing, time-travelling shootout to prevent the whole sorry chain of events from ever occurring.

Swarm! The 3rd Birthday! Ghosbusters!

There are no new demos on the PlayStation Store this week, but there are new games, new special offers and downloadable content by the truck load.

The games to focus on are 8/10 action puzzler Swarm - made by DeathSpank and Penny Arcade Adventures studio Hothead - and The 3rd Birthday. The latter is a showy PSP crime shooter by Square Enix that involves a steamy, "erotic" shower scene.

Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime turned out to be a load of old ectoplasm (4/10 - Eurogamer).

But motion mini-games could add "spice".

Microsoft and Sony reckon their motion control devices Kinect and Move will revolutionise the game industry, but one big hitter remains unconvinced of their relevance to that most hardcore of genres: the role-playing game.
