Crytek continues TimeSplitters Rewind support as PS4 version announced

Free indie-developed remake gathers steam.

Crytek has told Eurogamer it will continue to support TimeSplitters Rewind, the in-development fan remake of the classic British shooter series, as its indie team begins work on a PlayStation 4 port.

Rewind's next-gen console version, announced earlier this week, will support cross-platform play with Rewind's main PC build.

Unlike the PC version, Rewind will allow for classic splitscreen multiplayer on PS4.

"TimeSplitters Rewind is a fantastic initiative that Crytek continues to support," Nick Button-Brown, Crytek's general manager of games told Eurogamer today. "We are happy to see the excitement and we hope it will be a great game."

Due to be released in closed alpha this winter, TimeSplitters Rewind will eventually include all maps, weapons and characters from all three TimeSplitters games.

Each of the series' single-player campaigns will also eventually be added.

The project is the work of a band of fans led by project manager Michael Hubicka. As a condition of being able to use the TimeSplitters license, it will be made available absolutely free.

In a Reddit AMA posted this week, Hubicka also revealed the involvement of original TimeSplitters composer Graeme Norgate - of Rare, Free Radical Design and later Crytek UK fame.

An Xbox One version is unlikely, however - due to Microsoft's reticence to allow cross-platform play.

"If Microsoft will get in touch with me about how the distribution for indie developers works and it's something we can do, sure," Hubicka wrote. "But we'd really want to push for cross-platform play. It would be nice, but I highly doubt it. If Microsoft won't let AAA developers do it (for the most part) then I doubt they'll let us do it."

No release date for the full version of TimeSplitters Rewind has been set.
