Ultimate MVC3 originally DLC

Tsunami and health issues forced change.

UPDATE:

Andriasang has now updated its story to add more detail. Producer Ryota Niitsuma said Capcom was planning on releasing download content for MVC3 following the game's March release. However, due to the earthquake and health issues, they changed this plan. The game we're getting in Ultimate has more content than was planned for the download content.

ORIGINAL STORY: Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was originally planned as downloadable content for Marvel vs. Capcom 3, according to a new report.

In an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu (reported by Japanese website Game Jouhou, translated by Andriasang), Capcom said the decision to sell UMVC3 as a standalone budget game was made because of the March earthquake and tsunami disaster and staff health issues.

Meanwhile, the interview revealed that downloadable content will be released for UMVC3, including new costumes and new modes.

One new mode mentioned is unlimited Hyper Combos. Sounds like fun.

UMVC3, said to be 80 per cent complete, was announced last week at the San Diego Comic-Con. It features rebalanced gameplay and 12 new characters: Strider, Firebrand, Vergil, Frank West, Phoenix Wright and Nemesis for Capcom; Ghost Rider, Dr Strange, Nova, Rocket Raccoon, Hawkeye and Iron Fist for Marvel.
