Sorry, what exactly am I looking at that Kinect can't do already?

And stop talking about holodeck tech, seriously you're just making yourself sound stupid.

Impressive, actually.

Maximus, you obviously don't understand the whole "intelligent character motion" mentioned.

No I don't as it goes and I don't mind saying so. This looks like full body tracking to me, something I thought kinect could already do?
• NimbusTLD #5 1 year ago

I see this possibly revolutionising rehab! :)
• 3william56 #6 1 year ago

Intelligent enough not to be able to walk around a corner? It's cute, but nothing earth shattering. Uncharted did convincing lower body animation years ago (and it wasn't the first).
Holodeck indeed.

Does anyone know when the next wave of 'good' kinect games are coming out?
The kinect games line up feels like the Playstation 3 Launch games line up.
No wait even the PS3 line up wasn't this poor.
(What is Lionhead or Rare working on?)
These hack video are great and all, but i would rather have games i could... you know play

It seems to be about context sensitivity - the machine knows where you are in the virtual world, what interactions would make sense and how they would affect your avatar. Of course there are just two objects to interact with, but if it's about creating a database of objects and interactions that work with them, the sky's the limit.

To play in an adventure playground without looking like a paedo...
• DavidBoring #9 1 year ago

wow, another kinect mod/hack that shows exactly what kinect should do.
amazing
• Ninja_Tino #10 1 year ago

It's somewhat disheartening that hackers are seemingly utilising Kinect mote effectively than game developers.
• AdamAsunder #11 1 year ago

That's pretty cool actually, and an excellent way to get round walking. I can't believe I hadn't thought of that myself.

I'm waiting for new Kinect games too but for the moment Dance Central has kept me entertained, plus I've actually been losing weight too. Fnah!

I don't want to come off sounding like a Star Trek geek (I've seen probably 6 episodes all the way through), but how exactly is this meant to be like a holodeck? Surely a holodeck is a place where an artificial environment is projected around the user, all this is is just full body motion tracking with an image shown on a 2D screen.

/feels dirty.
• NewbieZilla #13 1 year ago

The Xbox 360 is great with a great line up of titles.

"next wave of 'good' kinect games"

On that? I'm waiting for the first wave.
• Murton #14 1 year ago

"realistic lower body animation" erm, no. Look at the character's legs, nobody walks like that.

Also, EG, please watch the video again and then explain just how this relates to Star Trek's holodeck? This "hack" plus VR helmet would make for a pretty nice combo, but Holodeck? Sorry.
• Whizzo #15 1 year ago

The point to it is that it isn't full body motion tracking, the software works out what you want to do without it. Are those confused by what the software does playing the video without sound or something?
• MasterNameless #16 1 year ago

@Ninja_Tino

That's a little unfair, considering that hackers can just throw some amazing shit together and chuck it on youtube. Whereas developers, you know, have to make the whole games - that takes a little longer, plus has to go through many other processes before we even see a trailer, never mind it getting released.
• JJrabbit #17 1 year ago

This is pretty cool. Further down the line, I can see this being crossed with NaturalMotion's Euphoria engine with some fluid, context based, animations.

But I have to agree with LazyNinja - I'm not quite sure how this is related to a holodeck...
• Ninja_Tino #18 1 year ago

No doubt, but they've had Kinect for a while now and there's been absolutely no mention of any upcoming games, no matter how far off, remotely like any of the best hacks. I know there's a difference between a demonstration of hanging on some monkey bars and making a full-blown, entertaining, engrossing game, but my point virtually was, like many others', when's the batch of really promising games going to appear? And this is from someone who owns Kinect and has enjoyed it but just yearns for more.

Its brilliant to see MS's gamble paying off. They've given people the tech, now they can come up with something brilliant. Rather than MS/Sony/Nintendo shoving stuff down our throat they think we want, maybe this way, people will come up with great stuff that won't cost the earth or be completely controlled by the money men. Nice move, MS.
• AdamAsunder #20 1 year ago

Haven't been any decent Kinect games?

Dance Central is excellent you mug.
• waggy79 #21 1 year ago

It's somewhat disheartening that hackers are seemingly utilising Kinect mote effectively than game developers.

You do know that there is a huge difference between someone taking a concept and making a video then someone taking that same concept and making a game. The difference is that a concept only has to work for the person doing the demo. Add in a whole of of different people and they way they interact with software and development times increase. Yes, there are companies that have Kinect and probably have games lined up but it appears that MS do not want them to reveal those games until they feel it's right.

The more complex the game, the more time it will take for those Kinect enabled games to iron out all the problems that can happen with a control scheme that does not rely on buttons. The thing that you see from the hacking scheme is that they are a lot of flexibility with Kinect and the way you use it, which may or may not amount to some very different games we play today but we will see.

Bloody hell. I never expected the 'walking with arms' would be the way it'd be tackled, but bravo!

Excellent stuff.
• dbamerso #25 1 year ago

@Machiavellian, Ninja_Tino

You're absolutely right that it takes a lot more to make a game than a quick video. This demonstration is not just a quick hack that we threw together; it's a full SDK that we'll be licensing to developers. The proof will be in the titles that release on our technology, but Activate3D is dedicated to getting this technology into games and into your living room. We've got a team of industry veterans working on it, and we're going strong.

If you have questions, let us know. I'm happy to answer them, and keep an eye on our blog for more info if you're interested.
