Uncharted movie in development News

PlayStation 3 News by Oli Welsh

26 June, 2009

The Hollywood Reporter brings news that Columbia Pictures is working on a film adaptation of PS3 action adventure Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

Kyle Ward is to write the script. He's already adapted Kane & Lynch for Lionsgate, which Bruce Willis is slated to star in, and is working on a sequel to Fox's Hitman film.

Among the producers are former Marvel Entertainment bosses Avi and Ari Arad, whose production company announced it would adapt Capcom's Lost Planet at E3 last year. Game-to-film adaptations are a profitable niche right now, it seems.

Uncharted's Indiana Jones-style treasure-hunting derring-do and roguish lead Nathan Drake ought to work well on the big screen. In the meantime, developer Naughty Dog is prepping Uncharted 2 for release this year, and very impressive it looks to. More at the Uncharted 2 gamepage.

Hmmm, a film based on a game inspired by films. Like that's worked in the past...
Ryan Reynolds for Nathan?

/Sigh.

Don't do it, Sony. The film will be utter wank, and will only taint the games as a result.

At least, I'd like them to get an unknown actor to star in it, although they'll probably crowbar in a rubbish action movie actor. They should at least get the script and story writers from Naughty Dog to write it, as their work on Uncharted 2 must be done and dusted a while back now.

Nooooooo! It will never capture the charm of the game. Dammnit Hollywood. Ryan Reynolds would be the closest, but still not right.... :(

Never been one to look for the latest game to movie adaptations, but this could be interesting. Still most interested in screen version of Bioshock though.

EDIT: Ryan Reynolds and Nathan Fillion? Both good choices, seems like some EGers have put some thought into this!

Gerard Butler would be a good fit for the part. Looks a lot like Nathan Drake and is a talented actor as well. http://www.collider.com/uploads/imageGal...

Well EG had to try and get a Michael Jackson pun from somewhere. :)

I'm quite surprised that game to film adaptations seem to be a profitable niche these days, despite the usual suckage of said movies.

Uncharted will make for the easiest game to movie adaptation ever. Mainly because it rips off a ton of movies anyway (not saying that's bad), so all they really need to do is rip off those same movies and get the cast right. There can really be no excuse for fucking this up.

Ryan Reynolds is too annoying, but I think Nathan Fillion would be a good choice. Shame he's probably a little too old to play the part of Nate Drake (who strikes me as being no older than about 30).

I'm racking brains trying to think of someone with a physical resemblance to him. For some reason I can't get Nick Moran out of my head, but he'd be a definite no unless he could do a convincing US accent.

What does Nolan North look like, as he obviously has the accent to a tee?!

EDIT - not a bad fit: http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/muppet...

Why didn't they get the screenplay / script writer's from Naughty Dog to write for the film? This other guy sounds like a hack.

When I first played Uncharted I did wonder whether Nathan Fillion was doing the in-game voice-over, so he would be automatically be my first choice for the role. But I am rather taken with metalmonk's suggestion of Joe Flanigan, I could see that working.

I think the acting talent for the actual game is worthy of the roles (especially Claudia Black in Uncharted 2 already has film roles under her belt), but no doubt they will get some A-lister who knows nothing of the franchise and proclaims to be the biggest fan EVAH in to play the role.

I am also not sure about the writer. Doing 3 separate game to movie conversions at once (Kane & Lynch, Uncharted & Hitman 2) sounds way to many (verging on UWE Boll territory), and while i am not familiar with any of his previous work, this out of the 3 games mentioned for movie stardom is easily the most marketable. It requires careful attention that it doesn't become a straight Indiana Jones rip off.

If done right it could be done with a similar mix of action, story and humour like Firefly/Serenity, which i think would work well for this franchise and as mentioned by many people in this thread that Nathan Fillion would be perfect for the role of Nathan Drake.

i'd rather see a super shitty game-adaptation than a so-so one.

that's just me though, and i'm one of those cranky guys that see the death of MJ not as the death of the king of pop, but the death of the worlds most famous paedophile, so...

They're making a Deadpool film anyway mate, so he'll have a full movie to himself soon! :)

What does the voice actor for Drake look like in real life? Could he, figuratively speaking, pull it off??

It read to me like some office challenge joke, where each writer has to get a Jackson reference into what they publish today. Lets see if we start to see more of it.

That Nolan North dude certainly has the face for the role. So if he is actually, you know, a good actor... he should probably be considered for the role. I'm sure stuff doesn't work like that in Hollywood though.

Drake struck me as a bit more weathered (with too many globe trotting miles under his belt) than 30. I figured him to be just the other side of 35.

Or maybe 30 just seems young to me these days :(

Ari Arad's involvement ensures that this will be a big, steaming pile of dog turd.

Why do these piss-poor adaptations get greenlit and yet Halo (with Peter Jackson and Neil Blomkamp) and BioShock (with Gore Verbinski) have a hard time getting made?

'Hollywood producer' should literally transalte to 'wanker'.
