UK charts: Tiger Woods roars to top

Too Human features. Full top 40 inside.

The latest and acclaimed instalment in the Tiger Woods PGA Tour series has roared to the top of the UK all-formats top 40 this week.

The 2009 edition marks the first time EA has ever scored a debut hole in one with the sports game, with sales matched fairly evenly across lead Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii platforms.

Microsoft also enjoys some of the spotlight as Too Human, the first instalment in the Xbox 360-exclusive action RPG series from Silicon Knights, stakes a claim at eight - despite middling reviews.

Otherwise the picture is a familiar one: Mario Kart Wii at two, Wii Fit at three, Carnival: Funfair Games up slightly to four and Wii Play at five.

Then comes Mario & Sonic at the Olympics at six, Big Beach Sports at seven, Beijing 2008 at nine and Wall-E rounding the list off at 10.

The Sims 2: Apartment Life expansion pack just missed the top flight and finished at 11, while Scrabble Interactive: 2007 Edition has enjoyed a resurgence to finish at 35. Chart-Track points to retailer "buy one get one free" promotions as helping shift the PC and DS game.

Fuck me. Tiger Woods, Beijing and 8 instances of complete shite in the top 10. I have NEVER seen things this bad. That 'The casuals are coming' article called it very wrong.
  • DanWhitehead #5 4 years ago

Of the eight instances of "complete shite", one is Mario Kart which is most definitely not complete shite, and one is Too Human, which is most definitely not a casual game. On top of which, it's the summer holidays so sales of kid/family games are bound to spike, and there haven't been any major "hardcore" releases for weeks.

Unless there was ever a time when the top ten was packed with nothing but fantastic classics, I still say any hand-wringing over the menace of casual games is missing the point. Or would a top ten filled with crap "hardcore" games be somehow better?

Well done Tiger, although I don't think you'll be there for long.

Infinity Ward and Activisions must be pleased that cod4 will likely still be in the top 20 when cod5 is released. Not bad for a cross platform fps.

"Casual games" don't neccesarily have success at the espence of "Hardcore games". It is not like the casual police are going to force me to play "casual games". Harcore games still sell very well, it sjut that more accessible, better packaged and marketed games sell even more. So what if casual games sell well? Its not hurting anyone; same as at the booze shop: crap soft drinks with alkohol in it like WKD and bacardi breezers and all that crap is real popular, casual drinks and sell well. But you can still find a vintage madeira, it that is more to your taste.

Companies won't stop making quality games - or quality wine - just because most consumers are morons.

The only reason Big Beach Sports is selling like fuck is because it has a Cricket-ey mode in it. I reckon someone who comes up with a fully fledged Cricket game would get rich quick.

Big Beach Sports also features in every single GAME Wii console bundle. That might help too.
