UK charts: Prototype works for Acti News

PC PlayStation 2 PSP DS Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Robert Purchese

22 June, 2009

Prototype has unseated The Sims 3 at the top of the UK all-formats chart after its second week on sale.

The Sims 3 is still strong at two, followed by chart familiar Wii Fit at three. Ghostbusters makes its debut on PS2 and PS3 at four.

Other new entries are Virtua Tennis 2009 on Wii, pushing the multiformat game up to nine, and ArmA II on PC, which enters at 19.

Rock Band Unplugged and Let's Tap struggle, taking three and 14 in their respective platform lists.

Elsewhere there are good weeks for Call of Duty: World at War, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings and Resident Evil 5.

Those dropping off the bottom include Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.

Nice to see ArmA II in there. The 1.02 patch came out on Saturday morning so I waited for that before playing.

@evilfoxhound,

I seriously doubt that Prototype and/or Fifa09 (just to pick 2 titles) shifted more copies than any of the consoles listed.

So no, it has nothing to do with which sold more copies.

Threshold is the point at which a comment which has received negative rep is hidden, unless you select to see it. So, if some div like (just plucking a name out of the sky) CountFapula makes one of his usual erudite posts which gets six points of negative rep, if your current threshold is -5, his posts won't show up unless you want them to.

I just completed prototype and the game starts out fun but then quickly becomes frustrating, you should probably play both but i think infamous is the better game.

I haven't played either, but I personally think that Infatype is the better game. Or maybe I mean Protomous. Yes, that one is better.

It's always good to have an opinion and state it as fact.

@ TopKatt: I'm loving Infamous and I'm about 15 hours in at the moment. If you're undecided, the rough guide seems to be this:

Infamous: slow starting, lots of fun by the end, leans more heavily on movement and exploration for gameplay (but still with a lot of combat)

Prototype: Leans more heavily on the combat, has some significant frustrations, but overall is a good blast.

TBH, I prefer the exploration and movement of Infamous, but they're both very good games. Prototype will likely perform better because it's cross-platform, but I sincerely hope that Infamous does well enough to geta sequel.

Infamous looks the better title than prototype, but I'd take Crackdown over both.

Annoyed that I Had to import my xbox copy of Ghostbusters though, I'm sure Sony thought it was worth it though, 540p and all.

If you check out the UK top 40 by individual formats on Kotaku, you might be surprised to see more PS3 titles in the top 20 than 360 ones. Sony aren't doing nearly as badly as a lot of people seem to think.

@ Greybeard: But Prototype sold 61% of copies on 360 compared to 36% on PS3. Although obviously it has more (recent) genre competition on PS3 with Infamous only just coming out.

I'd agree that Sony aren't doing anywhere near as bad as people like to make out in comparison to 360, but they're still doing rediculously bad sales-wise compared to their PS1/PS2 days. Which is a shame - everyone should get the chance to play The Last Guardian!

I'm not disagreeing with you.

I do get cheesed off with the endless negativity surrounding the PS3 though. Globally its already outsold the GameCube and with a price-cut it should sell considerably more, especially with the software line-up announced at E3.

Personally I couldn't give a toss who's the most successful platform holder. As long as each console has a decent market-share games will keep coming, which is all I really care about.

I believe that a situation where all 3 manufacturers are relatively close and competitive with each other is better for us as consumers than a scenario where one corporation is overwhelmingly dominant. This is what really bugs me about a lot of "alleged" Xbox fans, they moan and groan about Sony being the evil empire while praying that MS can maneuver themselves into the exact same position of tyranny... As the song says; "Here comes the new boss, same as the old boss".

@GreyBeard : I too dont get it.

But for me, the 360 and ps3 are so similar - with pretty much the same games on both platforms. I dont see either being "better" than the other. In fact to me there seems to be very little reason to buy both, and the choice of one over the other is purely down to which is the cheapest. The ps3 works out cheaper long run if you play a lot of online games, the 360 is the cheapest if you dont.

That wasn't much of a gamble really considering it had over twice the potential audience. What was amusing was your prediction that Prototype would review better than inFamous.

Generally when those games come out for the 360 there hasn't been much around the release date, a few weeks either side, so it is a beacon in a bleak period which people get excited about and buy.

Halo Wars was released the same date as KZ2 and KZ2 came out on top that week, FACT!

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/uk-cha...

Also many of the titles you named are well supported already and guaranteed sales. Many of the PS3 exclusives were new IPs and in the case of KZ2 coming as the sequel to a somewhat poor first game.

If I want to play the game at your childish level, actually looking at the sales figures (for the UK at least), Prototype isnt actually doing that well against Infamous. Lets see if the game can keep up the sales in the weeks to come eh!

I live in the UK, Australia has no relevance to me. Nor should it to you only to make you happy that an RTS has sold well there.

At the minute you could put Halo on a box of dog turd and it will still sell in it's millions , ie Halo Wars which has been the only 360 exclusive of note this year and considering it's now appraoching July is a little disappointing especially as I just bought a 360.

Hoping by Christmas time there will be a few games for it but they'll need to be special as it looks like Uncharted2 will be the game taking up most of my festive period.

If sales point to quality for you then your music collection must be a joy to behold.
