Ubisoft reveals new Prince of Persia

The Forgotten Sands for May 2010.

Ubisoft has confirmed the existence of a new Prince of Persia game subtitled The Forgotten Sands.

The game will be released "on consoles and handhelds" in May 201, and features elements you'll recognise from the Sands of Time series and exciting new elements you won't.

We spotted this in October when series creator Jordan Mechner filed a trademark to protect the name.

The game falls neatly alongside the Hollywood interpretation of the IP, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal and will be released on 28th May 2010.

The Sands of Time series spanned three games, POP: The Sands of Time (brilliant), POP: Warrior Within (decent) and POP: The Two Thrones (good).

Sooooo... rapid fire POP: The Forgotten Cashcow, in money-sucking ineptitude non-shocker!

    More at 10!
  • Gaol #2 2 years ago

So long as it doesn't interfere with the (imo) brilliant new interpretation from 2008. That's the sequel I want to see.
  • Waffleaber #3 2 years ago

Hmm, rushed movie tie-in? Hope not but the games have been on a slide since they turned the prince from a mouthy elitist aristocrat into an aggressive emo twat.
  • INSOMANiAC #4 2 years ago

Any chance of putting some gameplay back into the franchise ?
  • sublitterat #5 2 years ago

A movie based on 'Sands of Time', and a game called 'Forgotten Sands'?

Perhaps this is an HD revamp of 'Sands of Time' with a few extra levels, rather than a completely new game?
  • menage #6 2 years ago

The last one wasn't that bad actually. Looked good and was enjoying enough.

I hope it's more like SoT than the 2008 PoP which was little more than a game of simon says.
  • Lusterpurge #9 2 years ago

So a game based on a movie based on a game based on an older game?

Sounds like a AAA title there!

    POP(2008) is the worst game ever...horrible game...yuck

  • Alterego-X #11 2 years ago

POP 2008 had amazing art, and likeable story, too bad that the gameplay was that shallow.
  • dudefella #12 2 years ago

So wait... sequel to the last PoP game or what? Separate thing, or has the reboot been axed? That would make me sad, I loved its story and characters.
  • JahB #13 2 years ago

The last PoP game came out December 4th, 2008; this puts the dev time for this new game at 18 months and 6 days...

    i smell a transformers quality movie tie-in.

"Perhaps this is an HD revamp of 'Sands of Time' with a few extra levels, rather than a completely new game? "

I hope so, I'd love a HD revamp of Sand of Time. Its the only one that's actually been good (imho).
  • Jonathan_Fakenham #15 2 years ago

Huh. Joystiq says it's a sequel to the Sands of Time rather than the POP relaunch, #4 in that series that is.
So, it's kind of a movie tie-in then, I guess.
  • Dr.Mott #16 2 years ago

    At JahB

Not necessarily, the Sands of Time games came out pretty much exactly a year after each other. Sure, WW and T2T weren't as good as SoT, but they weren't Transformers bad.
  • Jonathan_Fakenham #17 2 years ago

The question really, is what happens to the chronology. Sands of Time and New Prince both actually. And despite having fun with the latest game, I don't know if I really care anymore. So, for me at least, this might be the point when the Prince of Persia series jumped the shark.
  • Tomo #18 2 years ago

Didn't PoP '08 come out in December last year? So that's a what... 18 month gap? I thought the original 3D trilogy were annual things? If anything, this one has had another 6 months dev time...
  • twilight72 #19 2 years ago

I didn't like the last Prince of Persia game. I certainly hope they do a better job this go around.
  • smelly #20 2 years ago

I want to see the gameplay from sands of time, mixed with the artstyle of the last pop game... and i'm sold.
  • kaya08 #21 2 years ago

I really enjoyed the last game, despite feeling vaguely dirty for doing so. Have to say I'm looking forward to the next part. If it happens.

If it's a movie tie-in, Ubi can fuck right off.
  • smelly #23 2 years ago

    >If it's a movie tie-in, Ubi can fuck right off.

why? Ubi's king kong movie tie in was great?
  • tachometer #24 2 years ago

I'm still trying to forget the last one!
  • jimboton #25 2 years ago

I loved the 2003-05 trilogy. The last game wasn't exactly awful, but I really really want to take again control of my jumping and my climbing while navigating the environment.

  • Spong #26 2 years ago

"why? Ubi's king kong movie tie in was great? "

Is that a joke? King Kong both sucked and blowed.

Hurrah! Loved the last trilogy and the latest offering.
  • Steroyd #28 2 years ago

As long as it's not based on the last PoP, it can only be a good thing.

I don't know what Ubisoft were thinking when making it, infinite lives is one thing, being unable to die not matter how much you sucked is another.
  • Sharzam #29 2 years ago

If its anything close to SoT i will be happy, one of the true greats that game was. Really didnt like where they took the series , i mean it surely was a marketing PR type person that thought "wait a minute lets make it darker" and then "wouldnt it be cool if..."
  • lucky_jim #30 2 years ago

Ah the 2008 version was decent, promising even. But as the first PoP on this generation, we all wanted it to amaze us as much as Sands of Time did at the time, and that was always gonna be a tall order.

On its own merits it was passable. If Ubi released a sequel to the 2008 game which was as big an improvement over its predecessor as Assassin's Creed 2 is over its own, wouldn't that be a game well worth playing?

But yeah. Another Sands of Time. Could be brilliant, could be memory-ruining shite.

"The game falls neatly alongside the Hollywood interpretation of the IP, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal and will be released on 28th May 2010.

But, just six months away from release, this announcement arrives unusually late."

I was thinking while reading that its a good promo for both new game release and the movie itself to do it but what conserns me is that, if they filed the trademark so recently and they havent shown anything so far, not only its unlike Ubisoft indeed but also hints that the reason for no word on the game and no visual evidence ( including artwork which they tend to show around like they did last time )is because they are making a game which is a follow up of Sands of time in a rush.

Meaning: they have theme, which is Sands of time and they work on that including and throwing in a couple of new elements. Which also explains why they had no excuse to start building up hype around this yet.
In Conclusion: I have been very excited seeing that this movie might be the first adaptation from game->movie that looks like it will manage to be an awesome one yet it starts feeling like they are about to ruin the gaming series in their hurry to throw to us a new PoP for some quick cash. If thats the case they'll get on my bad and dissrespected list.

There it is again: POP: Warrior Within (decent). I don't understand the hate for that game. I thought it was the most enjoyable and engrossing part in the trilogy, really.
  • Ninja_Tino #33 2 years ago

The tone of Warrior Within was silly. The darkness wasn't necessary at all. However, that didn't stop it from being a fantastic gaming experience. Those chases from the...um...Dharmamamamia thingybob were more tense than Christian Bale and, although it's been a while, I seem to remember an improved combat system and great puzzles. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say all 4 console PoP's are fab!
  • Antaios #34 2 years ago

Okay, so perhaps it was a bit too dark for its own good, but it was a very good game with terrific gameplay. I also honestly think it's the only PoP I've played more than once.

mechner's monster meets the last guardian
  • Guildenstern #36 2 years ago

    So no PC version then?
  • udat #37 2 years ago

Hmm, I'd have rated the three starting with Sands as "brilliant -> weak -> average" and then the most recent one as "encouraging".
  • Sonic_D #38 2 years ago

@udat, you sound like a teacher, but I generally agree with what you say.
  • ThisWillDestroyYou #39 2 years ago

i never understood the rage for the 'non-dieing mechanism' in the latest one on 360. As in most platform games ifyou fell you got put back at the start of the sequence, really enjoyed this game.

Was stunning looking , complemented by a great soundtrack it surely has the most spellbinding vistas of any game, a lovely Studio Ghibli feel to some levels that is sorely missing from all the grey and brown shooters we get.
  • Ashcroft #40 2 years ago

If they sully the name of Sands of Time, I will kill them all.
  • TheTingler #41 2 years ago

I agree with sublitterat - this is most likely an HD revamp/special edition of The Sands of Time, with a few bonus levels.
