Two new modes for Metal Gear Online News

PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

8 July, 2008

Konami has updated Metal Gear Online with two free new gameplay modes: Team Sneaking and Headshot Only.

Team Sneaking lets all the members of one team play as a Snake-style secret agent, invisible unless spotted. Their objective is to infiltrate and attack their goal, but if the defending team spots them they will have to hide until a timer runs down.

Just like the single-player, then, except online. Some, like our own Dan Whitehead, would argue that there should have been more of that in MGO to start with. As he pointed out in his 7/10 review, MGO's Sneaking Mission - where one player plays as Snake - was the only real nod to the game's traditions.

The other mode, Headshot Only, should be self-explanatory. We hope anyway, or we've seriously misjudged our audience.

You can keep up with MGO's ongoing updates via Konami's official website, and we'll continue to note them here. After much faffing around downloading the PS3 2.41 firmware earlier we can also confirm that the above modes are available to European gamers, too.

Team sneaking is cool.

At first I thought everyone having a Stealth camo was a bs advantage but you really need teamwork to overcome it, same when you're on the sneaking team, one person gets shot, and it's a tranq gun vs machine gun rifle.

Sneaking modes are critical to the success of this game for me. For 3rd person shootfests, I saw no reason to defect from Warhawk... however I loved the Snake mode and general objective play.

Team Sneaking is awesome.

But this has been up for days, late to the party, EG. Bad show.

Well it wouldn't be Eurogamer if they didn't have a delay in news to the rest of the world. :P

Team sneak is a great new mode. If only it didn't keep automatching me on Blood Bath and then changing the mode to deathmatch. Worst map ever.

In the few hours I played MGO I got the distinct impression that for all intents and purposes, it already was "headshot only", considering it's either one shot to the head or around a clip and a half anywhere else on the body :).

Is there any way you can take the other (shittier) modes out of the map rotation?

It seems as if every server I go on, whether I auto-match or select from the server list, has the wank modes like vanilla DM and the capture missions. Which usually sees me quitting and joining another game.

One day Konami will figure out this new-fangled online thing I'm sure.

Headshot only is rubbish. What made them think of that?
The new team sneaking is definitely cool, but one person on the sneak team can ruin it for everyone by being spotted continually.

I don't know about that, because once they're dead, they're DEAD!

I may be thick and haven't played the game at all either, but I've got o ask this: "How do you spot an invisible man?"
