Quake Live beta opens tomorrow
Browser-based Q3A for the masses.
id Software will begin the Quake Live beta tomorrow, giving anyone the chance to test the browser-based, Quake III-inspired shooter.
Closed beta accounts not active within the last 28 days will be cleared, wiping all current statistics. However, player names and settings will remain. And this, id Software said in a statement, will be the last time Quake Live stats are ever wiped.
Those keen on taking part in the open beta will need to sign-up on the official Quake Live website tomorrow, where they should find extra information on the free-to-play game: how it's getting on and what's next.
Quake Live - originally Quake Zero - was unveiled in late 2007. The game will be exclusive to PC, run on old machines and be funded by advertising, although we're told this will be non-intrusive.

Loving this, only found time for a couple of games though.

Must be your connection, played it and it was lagless. The last game I played was pretty fuckeup though.

That is probably because your browser is downloading the game assets in the background. After you've installed and logged into the site, it starts downloading the packages for the game (you'll see a progress indicator near the top of the screen). Once it has finished downloading everything the game will be smooth.

Only problem at the moment is it seems to have matched me up against a lot of very good opponents, and i'm a bit rusty at the old twitch shooting, more used to slightly slower paces games now. Still the purest deathmatch experience around though.

Not many of the Quake 3 community wanted to give up on the game and now id has resurrected probably the best multiplayer DM FPS ever made. I know purists will say Quake was better, but I feel Quake 3 was more rounded and felt like the perfect sequel to the first two games.
Put those controllers away lads, this is a real FPS.

It's pretty stable and looks really crisp at higher resolutions. Even after all these years it's still the king of deathmatch FPS imho.
If you get sick of getting fragged to hell and back by the pro guys you can still have some fun with the bots...or spectate matches from the point of view of the players.
