Over 90 servers for Frontlines launch
360's first 50-player map detailed.
THQ has lined up over 90 dedicated Xbox 360 servers for Frontlines: Fuel of War's launch in Europe and the USA, which launches here on 29th February.
The publisher has also confirmed what developer Kaos Studios said the other week - that the game will support over 50 players on 360.
The first map to do so will be Village, which begins as a close-quarters fight through small buildings before graduating into an open battlefield as said buildings are blown apart by the battle.
THQ says that other maps will be opened up for 50-player combat once demand has reached a point where additional dedicated servers need to be brought online, which seems sensible.
And for PC players wondering where they are in all this, THQ points out that the PC version has 64-player support.
Frontlines: Fuel of War has been developed by Kaos Studios - whose staff have previously worked on the popular Battlefield: Desert Combat mod, among other things - and is available to sample on Xbox Live thanks to a multiplayer demo.
Look out for our review of Frontlines very soon.

/has (FINALLY) managed to download the mp demo but has yet to play it, but is looking for a replacement for BF2: Modern Combat

p.s. You can only chat to people in the same squad as you, up on the D-pad for squad options.

2 issues though, most of the achievements are for single player, which is really stupid and I'm worried that there isn't a party system in the full game too.

You've got to love those bad ass mini bot things.

It's not the first game to use dedicated servers. I wonder if 50p is interesting. I always prefer 4vs4, even COD4 with it's 9vs9 is too much chaos imo.

Out of curiosity any idea what the others are? I'm assuming CoD4 has to be, because of your status being saved, and probably Lost Planet for the same reason, but which others? Not that it matters which, for all the time I'm ever online, but it is a rip-off when you have games that just use P2P.
If it's just one huge open map, it might feel too empty with any less than 50 people, so I'm glad there wil be lots of head for me to try and hit, miss, and get killed

I definitely prefer the unmitigated chaos of large-scale battles, even when getting spawn-camped. Different strokes, and all that...
Fired up the demo last night and had quite good fun on a 32 player match - framerate was fairly solid, decent ranking-up system that didn't feel like a strain, nor an easy garden walk.
However, I will say that it definitely felt like a PC title converted to console. It's the first FPS I've played on 360 that made me think "I would prefer a mouse/keyboard combo":-
the controls felt 'spongy', even with sensitivity adjusted to within an inch of its digital life;
none of the controller layouts seemed logical or intuitive;
the ability to always be able to run seemed bizarre - I actually sprinted across an entire map just in case the time-out was a long one, but nope, my soldier was apparently a marathon runner;
the weapon-selection wheel was a little odd, in that it stopped you moving while you chose weapons - BF2: Modern Combat's is much better.
So, all-in-all, a few niggling issues, which I'm sure I'll learn to get used to or ignore, but overall a decent game - based on the MP demo. Will buy it if I can get hold of it for under £35, but wouldn't pay totally full retail for it.

Reminded me of the nightmare that was trying to play BF2 on PC.
I'm steering well clear.

It's a shame about the constant running, but I guess the maps are so large they thought we neeed it. And stopping to change weapon is annoying too, but at least it affects everyone. The button layout gets me too - after playing Vegas or CoD4 it's another layout to remember and I keep accidentally grenading people.

I thought about ordering it today, but at the moment, the demo is all the online shooter that I need!
