No Manhunt 2 date despite Nintendo claim News

Wii PlayStation 2 PSP News by Tom Bramwell

24 June, 2008

Rockstar has declined to confirm Nintendo's claim that Manhunt 2 is due out for Wii in Europe this August.

"We have no confirmed release date set for Manhunt 2 in Europe," a Rockstar spokesperson told Eurogamer this afternoon.

Manhunt 2 was originally banned by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) but after resubmission and a protracted legal battle the BBFC gave up and issued it with an 18 certificate.

The game launched in the US on Wii, PS2 and PSP last October.

Who cares... the game wasn't that good anyway if the reviews were anything to go by and I doubt it'll be better for being heavily censored. I'd be surprised if this even sells in the UK as I can't imagine it'll be well advertised on TV or in the media given the controversy surrounding the first game which was subsequently banned. I'd imagine Nintendo are quite embarassed by it given how family friendly orientated the Wii is.

I'd buy it just to exert my right to buy it, even if it probably is rubbish.

Censored or not it's not very good. Lacks everything that was good about the first one. Also Darren? was the first one actually banned in the UK? I don't think it was. iirc it was just the Dixons group who refused to stock it.

Why is it every time Manhunt 2 is mentioned, the first comment is inevitably some idiot missing the point? I've said it a million times, it's not the quality of the game that's important, it's the principal of censorship.

I'm very glad to hear this game is coming out at last.
I probably wouldn't have bought it anyway and after watching some videos of censored gameplay on youtube I'm definately not going to bother.
But I'm so glad to see that this country still has even a little bit of freedom left.

@Darren & Saladin:
The first game was never banned in the UK. After it was falsely accused of causing the murder of Stefan Pakeerah certain shops (including GAME, Dixons and Currys) refused to stock it. Although as it happens you can still by it new on PC from my local GAME.

@arcanis22: Erm...what? I never claimed the first game was banned. I'm well aware of the history of the game, thanks.

Read posts more carefully in future before tarring me with the idiot-brush, thanks very much,

Has the game been changed for the European market since i't's release in the U.S.? Or are you guys talking about the U.S. version? If so, then I have to disagree with the notion that Manhunt 2 was censored. By asking a license to make the game, Rockstar knew fully that they could not make it an AO game. Therefore, that they made it too violent and got an AO rating, and subsequently had to tone it down is completely their own fault.
This is not censoring on Nintendo's of Sony's part, but Nintendo and Sony making sure that Rockstar kept the promises it made in the first place.

Nope, that's Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft as well running scared of the big bad AO rating, you couldn't really say that refusing to publish games that got rated AO was anything other than wrong-headed. Why, because the whole thing adds up to an AO rating being a de facto ban/pressure to self-censor

anyone know if the Netherlands are still getting an uncut copy, or has that been totally scrapped?

the only way i am ever going to consider this game is in its original uncut directors cut. the point of the game was shock value and gore. you don't go and see SAW for the writing, people didn't flock to the coliseum of Rome to make sure health and safety were up to scratch, and people don't slow down and look at traffic accidents because they hope everyone is just dandy. they wanna see a severed head or something.

this games audience was never critical thinkers, or people who want to appreciate art, or even those who need good game play (you know the kind. the ones who don't complain at watching the kills in the first game, instead of executing it themselves, or MGS4 fans for half the game being cut scenes instead of gameplay.) or children for that matter.

it had a target audience of adult gore voyeurs, niche at best in Europe, was never going to be a major seller.
they have gutted it now, so that even their niche audience doesn't want to know.

art or entertainment or interactive movie, the point was clear until censorship came along.

i don't want censorship offal thankyouverymuch. and i couldn't give a fuck about the kids.

That's what I mean. We can philosophize all we want about Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft's stance on this, but as businesses it's in their every right to choose whatever they want to allow on their products. That's not real censorship, but rather it's business strategy. Just like Rockstar as a business has every right to choose the platform for their game. If they wanted to make and release an AO game, they should have made it for PC.

Again, if Rockstar chooses to develop a game for Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft, then they know it can't be an AO game. It will be in their contract as licensee even. It isn't censorship on Nintendo's and Sony's part if they then still make an AO game and afterwards have to tone it down. You might as you say call it self-censorship, but that's completely Rockstar's fault for choosing Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft instead of the PC to develop for.

Quite right mate. My mistake and I'm really sorry I actually read your comment and thought you'd made the most sense so far.
I just put your name in instead of "dadrester". Again sorry, I'll be more careful next time. *slinks off in shame*
