Buy Battlefield 2 add-on online

Pre-download for $29.99.

Electronic Arts has announced that new expansion pack Battlefield 2: Special Forces is now available to buy and download via the EA website.

All you have to do is install the new EA Downloader, hand over $29.99 (that's just over 17 quid in the old money) and off you go. It's just like Valve's Steam service, basically.

Only thing is you can't actually play the expansion until 1pm EST (that's 6pm in the, er, old time) on November 22 - but at least it'll be all ready for action when that moment rolls around.

Battlefield 2: Special Forces features "the latest, most technologically advanced vehicles and weapons systems available to man," according to EA. You can choose to play for any one of six Special Forces teams - Navy SEALs, Russian Spetznas, MEC Special Forces, rebel groups, insurgents or the good old SAS. There are ten new vehicles, too.

If you like the sound of it but are frightened by technology, don't panic - Battlefield 2: Special Forces will soon be available in actual shops, too.

According to some of the fan sites, if you're in Europe it wont be unlocked until the European release date (25th)

I will buy it at play.com for £14.99 (= 27 US$) and have a disc plus a good warm feeling of NOT having done a favour to the EA folks...

Are they nuts to charge 30 US$ for it? At least HL2 was cheaper to download than the retail disc.

Huh? HL2 cost as much online in the US as offline(iirc), just the currency differences made it cheaper to buy it online from UK.

Also, it's still full price when in shop copies went to half price long long ago.

Dont bitch poor old steam it did a good job for a first try, and even so theyve managed to sort most of the problems, i find myself wishing that other games used it too.

I'm still trying to work out how online retailers can sell a physical copy cheaper than a publisher offers a direct download. Not exactly enticing for the customer, is it?

Anybody read the google group PC.games.action (something like that)?
There was a poster on there called "SteamKiller" who effectively spammed the group to death.
Still makes me sad to think about that.
