DICE confirms Battlefield 2142

The war on ice.

With the producer having virtually said it and actual video footage of it on the Internet, DICE has decided to share the news of Battlefield 2142's development with its loyal fans on the BF2 community site, because "we know that you guys need to know first". Moving on...

"The more sniper-eyed of you out there will probably already know, but we're currently hard at work developing 'Battlefield 2142', which is scheduled for release this Autumn," says the update.

"As you'll have guessed, this is a departure for the BF series as we're going into the future - something that a lot of you wanted to see happen in the BF universe. We're creating a ton of cool features that you won't have seen in any BF before, including cloaking devices, mines that follow you, awesome new rifles, guns and grenades, and of course, MECHS!"

The update adds that DICE Stockholm is developing 2142, while DICE Canada is hard at work on a 1.3 patch for Battlefield 2 - as well as the forthcoming Armored Fury "Booster Pack", which is due out via EA's Downloader digital distribution widget at some point soon.

DICE promises to keep website-watchers clued in on 2142's development, and says there will be an official unveiling later this week.

"Snoken - vi har sett fram emot Mine 2 och kan lugnt säga att vi inte blev besvikna!" the update concludes. Which probably means "Let's see how many stupid English journalists copy and paste this into their stories and ask their Swedish readers for help translating it!"

Hey! 1st comment!! Get in there..

Er.... should be a good game :)
  • Errol #2 6 years ago

Not at all interested in this (or Enemy territory). The appeal of the BF series is (in part) due to the realistic nature of the weapons, vehicles and settings.

I have no interest in futuristic warfare and will stick to BF2; where I can enjoy killing the American pig-dog infidels.

Still have to play BF2 online, since I'm now on 56K. So it's just Counterstrike and UT2K4 for me. I probably can wait for them to write down some decent net code.
    Bah.
  • marilena #4 6 years ago

Since the first time I saw Battlefield 1942 I thought about this, so thank you, DICE.

ANd Errol, I really disagree. There's nothing realistic about the weapons in Battlefield and for me at least the realistic setting means nothing. Anyway, I don't expect them to have Unreal Tournament weapons, it's still going to be the same type of game.
  • Furbs #5 6 years ago

I'm with Errol for once (except about Enemy Territory). The BF series is about realworld conflict, using recognisable hardware. Thats what most BF2 players want. To claim theres nothing realistic about the guns is a bit odd - ok they are balanced from a gameplay point of view, but they are all real world weapons rather than generic lasergun #24224

Imagine if the next Rainbow 6 had mechs in it? Or if the next Ghost Recon was set on the moon?

Couldn´t help it, registered an account just to help you guys out with the swedish.

"Snoken - vi har sett fram emot Mine 2 och kan lugnt säga att vi inte blev besvikna!"

    translates roughly to this:

Snoken (a nickname, also a species of snakes) We have been looking forward to Mine 2 (don´t really know what he means by that, there isn´t a swedish word like Mine ) and can easily say that we weren´t dissapointed.

    glad I could help

FFS, just reading 'cloaking devices' has turned me right off, not that I was too keen before.

As I have said before, if I didn't want to see my enemy, I wouldn't have bought a telly.

Rubbish. Getting killed by someone you can't even see :p

I'm with marilena on this one, looking really forward to this.

Errol & Furbs, what irritates me most in BF games is their realistic nature, exploiting real conflicts and making them replayable (though not as distasteful as Kuma/War). If I wanted real warfare, I'd just turn to any TV news channel. It's a matter of IMO, really.

edit: And Orca-like helicopters (see trailer) + Mechs FTW!

Yeah but its not in keeping with the series, thats what I dont like about it. I've got no ill feeling to futuristic games (hence I cant wait for Enemy Territory), I just feel that if they wanted to make a game like this, they'd almost have been better ditching the Battlefield name.

Would be good for EA as they could claim to have another IP.

And to be fair to BF2, its a ficticious conflict. BF42/BF:V are both based around conflicts from 30+ years ago, so its not like they are set around the current war in Iraq. Plus the two historical games offer pretty stylised representations of the battles they mimic.

Nah....it is bound to be a strictly time limited (10 secs at a time?)effect and belong to a class of player with a rubbish weapon load out

Anything else would lead to a server full of cloaked players through the whole game...LOL, how mental would that be.....

This game is gonna be awesomer.
  • wildcombination #12 6 years ago

Mine is a fairly well-known video made by the user Snoken, using audio tracks from Find Nemo (I think, or Madagascar or some other), Monthy Python and famous Swedish rock acts like Kent and Anna Ternheim over BF2 gameplay footage. It's good fun, and I think it can be found easily using Google Video or YouTube.
  • brokenkey #13 6 years ago

Asia and the pacific ocean cease to exist by 2105 according to that video..
  • kangarootoo #14 6 years ago

"though not as distasteful as Kuma/War"

Well said that man. Everyone involved in that product needs to take a good look at what they are doing.
  • Furbs #15 6 years ago

So rhythm, all those guns and vehicles are totally made up?

Since your PC wont run the game, how can you call it a "twitch" shooter? Try and shoot someone at any sort of range whilst running with the gun not in iron sights mode and see how many people you kill. The bunny hop has been addressed, precisly because the community didnt like that it made it unrealistic, same as with the arming distance on the grenade launchers.

Respawns? Thats called gameplay. Its not a sim. Its a game using realistic influences. Cant you see that or is your warped bitterness towards the game clouding your judgement again? Maybe try putting in some time with it before you moan about it?
  • Hunam85 #16 6 years ago

The gameplay looked quite nice from the vid, dont care much for the setting, id much rather have Battlefield C&C :)
  • Sorb #17 6 years ago

The "Snoken" mystery is getting more interesting, here is a link now:
    http://www.bf2.se/mine2.php

We´ll see in about 30 hours (!!) when I´ve finished downloading it if it´s as good as the DICE people says .

Thanks to Cyborg20003 for the translation, it saved me the trouble ;)
  • Derblington #18 6 years ago

Why not wait until it's out before you start shouting about the things you don't like. It might not be the game you think it'll be.

  • Furbs #19 6 years ago

Because I dont like the setting for a BF game. Its nothing to do with with the gameplay, I personally just dont want that from the series. Especially since its going to be going up against Enemy Territory, which tbh, I think will blow it away.

Again, ask a GR, SWAT or or R6 fan if they'd be happy with laser guns, or if Halo 3 had a WW2 setting, or if Age of Empires fans if they'd enjoy another generic futuristic setting.

Stop towing the party line :)

How do you know it has laser guns?
  • Furbs #21 6 years ago

I never said it did :) I was just saying if you applied a scifi setting to the games I mentioned it probably wouldnt be popular.

Hey Mechs can be fun, but EA should have set this up as a new franchise using the engine. Everyones a winner that way.
  • SanktePer #22 6 years ago

I don't think that bf should be all to realistic. For me, the best parts was the "out of an and airplane and into a tank." I think it will be fun in whatever setting. I just wish my computer could handle it...
  • Atropos #23 6 years ago

On the swedish side of things, Cyborg's correct on the translation, I'm just going to add some colour: Snoken is indeed a type of snake, it's an adder. So yeah, a nick then. "Snoken", literally = The Adder (the -en in snoken adds the the).

Meanwhile, Mine 2 is a fan-made BF2 movie by said adder. It's spiffy. Check it out.

Oh, forgot that the word for adder (snok) is also swedish slang for schnoss, so the nick might mean "The Nose".

Over and out from the land of too much whisky and trivia.
