More XBLA games from id? News

Xbox 360 News by Tom Bramwell

12 October, 2006

It looks like DOOM might not be the last classic id Software game to make its way onto Xbox Live Arcade, with company CEO Todd Hollenshead saying that the reaction to it "bodes well" for others to follow in its wake.

Speaking to Firing Squad recently, Hollenshead admitted that id is "looking at bringing some of the other games to Xbox Live Arcade" but said "a lot is going to depend on the response to DOOM", which has been "fantastic so far" from what Microsoft's told him.

Although id is probably best known for the likes of DOOM and Quake, the company has a back catalogue rich with games that might be appropriate for conversion to Live Arcade, including the likes of Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Heretic and Hexen, with DOOM II and Final DOOM also potential releases.

Although obviously we're holding out for Dangerous Dave in the Haunted Mansion.

Hollenshead also suggested that, after the Apple-conference-esque surprise launch of DOOM at X06, the developer would probably remain quiet about anything new until it was almost upon us. Sounds good to us - we like surprises.

I dont think Wolfenstein 3D would be worth the time or effort on XBLA. But Hexen and Heretic would be sweet.

Actually Scramble is so pants Wolfenstein would seem like a AAA release.

"More XBLA games from id?"

That'll be:

Doom
Doom 2
Doom 2.5
Final Doom 3
Doom Trilogy Part 4

etc etc - you get the idea.

Still, I'm not knocking it.

Heretic would be good.

I wonder if any other developers can get rights to publish old games like Descent? Now that was a great multiplayer game. Lost many hours in college on that.

Heretic would be good, but without a doubt, I want Commander Keen!! All episodes please!

I've still got a 3.5" floppy disk stashed away at my mum's with the free shareware 1st episode - came free on a PC mag. Never got round to ordering the other episodes, so would love to get my hands on it.

For those who wish Quake to be made available on the Arcade, you can buy Quake 4 for around £20-30 on the Xbox 360 these days and get Quake II included on a seperate disc.

What's wrong with Quake at 50mb? I thought they just had to be small enough to fit on a memory card, which at 64mb, it would, no?

Who wants Quake 2? Quake is what we want, not the slow footsteppy gubbins they came out with later on.

As I recall Qkaue 1 took up only 32 megs on my old P75.

That was probably without music though.

Still, I couldn't stand all that Nine Inch Nails spooky ambience shit anyway. Give me Doom's wailing Midi guitars any day.

There is a completely free version already available:

http://equake.quakeworld.nu/download.php...

I'd imagine that any quakeworld vets would view playing with a pad as sucking the cock of death, but for everyone else it'd probably be great.

The excellent N64 version of Quake came on a measly 8 MB or 12 MB cartridge so I'm sure they could fit it into the 50 MB restriction on the Xbox 360. With widescreen support and texture filtering please!

Wasn't that apogee or 3drealms? I'm sure that they are liking their fingers now as well, looking at the statistics...

"Holy crap Id did Commander Keen!?!"

They did it for a publisher called Apogee, most of Apogee's games were like that.

ID then went off on their own to do Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, and Apogee started doing its own Doom-style games using the brand name 3D Realms, the first of which was Duke Nukem 3D.

Quake was about 80mb installed. It could probably be shrunk more with compressed textures, and even the "music" could probably be shrunk considerably as wma or whatever.

These days you might be able to simply uncompress it into memory at runtime fast enough to make it a workable method.

A RAM disk type situation if you like, so the download could be kept small without cutting anything.

chupachups, not exactly id continued use Apogee as a distributor and a tech partner (licensed Wolf3D Engine) up until Doom. Wolfenstien 3D was the last Apogge/id game but the last actual engine to be used from memory was the "Blake Stone" series (hardly modified Wolf3D engine).

Doom onwards they started doing their own thing.

And with regards to 3DRealms I always thought they were a serperate entity as Rise of the Triad (heavily modified Wolf3D engine) was produced & published by 3DRealms themselves (that's what the box art says on my original anyway).

Anyway any of those games on live arcade would be refreshing, because it's getting harder and harder to make these titles work correctly on modern machines and I just don't have the time/space to keep/maintain an old P90 + Adlib + Original SB, etc to play them.

Edit:
I may still be wrong (hope not), so if you wish just take what I said with a grain of salt. :(

It still boggles my mind.
But they are some great original LIVE games coming soon (one super smash bros imitation I'm keeping my eyes on).

Heretic and Hexen weren't developed by id. They were made using the Doom engine, but by id's parners-in-crime Raven. id did the publishing, but I doubt they could put the games on XBLA without Raven's approval. Which means that they have to get Activision's approval, since Activision owns Raven (and does not own id).

Myself, I'd love to see Commander Keen hit XBLA as well. Wolfenstein 3D and Quake might sell better, though.
