New Metroid DS details

Seven deathmatch modes!

Some new details of forthcoming Nintendo DS title Metroid Prime Hunters have been revealed - including news that there will be seven deathmatch modes to choose from.

That's according to an interview on Nintendo's official website with game director Masamichi Abe and designer Richard Vorodi. Turns out the deathmatch modes will include Battle and Survival, as well as the inevitable Capture the Flag.

There will also be a Bounty mode, where you're tasked with picking up something called an Octolith and safely carrying it all the way home. Challenge mode will see you battling it out with other players for territory, while Nodes mode puts you in charge of protecting a specific piece of turf. And finally there's Prime Hunter mode, which offers a variation on tag. All of the multiplayer modes will be available both over local area Wi-Fi play and the Wi-Fi Connection service.

The other good news is that Metroid DS will feature a 'Rival Radar' option. If you've got it switched on, your DS will alert you when fellow Metroid fans are in range; it's just like Nintendogs' 'Bark Mode', in other words.

You'll be able to view your statistics - such which weapon you use the most and so on - via your very own Hunter License. And what's more, you'll be able to check out other players' licenses via the Wi-Fi Connection service.

Metroid Prime Hunters is out on May 5th.

Can't wait, but I see there's still no mention of the voice chat for Europe......

I don't really give a damn about the multiplayer aspects, I want to here more about the single player side of the game, especially what the controls have ended up like. The controls in the demo were OK until you got to the jumping bits or the silly one on one deathmatch bit at the end, then they didn't work for me at all.

So, they got the netcode working better than Mariokart then :)

The controls in the demo were OK

From reading info on other sites, it appears they've actually refined the control scheme since the demo version. The controls are apparently much better and you can also adjust the sensitivity of the aim/look. Which is handy!

I must admit I was disappointed with the demo, but this game is now showing a lot more promise - personally I now cant wait!

I just hope the single-player is good as I'm not really that fond of the Quake-style multiplayer that it sounds like Hunters will offer.

The multiplayer sounds excellent... as a bonus. More on the singleplayer would be good. Metroid's have always been about a great, immersive single player quest. I hope they haven't spread themselves too thinly by going all out on the multiplayer.

Just a bit of caution, I am hoping and imagining that the game (single player) will indeed be a thing of beauty - if the controls are as good as they are said to be! :)

I hope they haven't spread themselves too thinly by going all out on the multiplayer.

Kotaku are reporting that the single player mode is only just slightly shorter (timewise) than metroid prime on the cube. If this is true then the multiplayer aspect could just be the icing on the cake!!

Slightly concerning however is apparently you start off 'fully powered' (apart from health tanks/missiles of course). I hope this doesn't remove some of the challenge from the puzzles...............

I was impressed by the demo, but it was the first thing I saw actually running on the DS so that adds to the wow factor of that moment. I'm actually not caring too much about the SP of hunters. I've got two far better looking Metroid Primes already on the cube. The MP part is where it's at. The MP of Echoes sucked so I hope they put up something very, very nice with hunters. Sounds promising at least!
