MGS4 database coming to Europe

It's just days away, apparently.

Konami has confirmed European gamers will get access to the Metal Gear Solid 4 database after all - and there's not long to wait.

As previously reported, the database is packed with info about the game and its predecessors.

Until now only those with US PSN accounts have been given access, but it'll be available on the European PSN Store from June 26th - that's Thursday in the old money. And it's all free and everything.

Glad Europe is finally getting at least some of that love everyone else seems to get.
  • Darren #2 4 years ago

So exactly why did we Europeans have to wait a week for this database when it is clear from the US and Japanese ones that it has already been localised into several European languages? Eh?
  • dr_shambles #3 4 years ago

Cool. Might actually but the game now. Just have some coffee ready for the cut-scenes.
  • GamesConnoisseur #4 4 years ago

Wow, a mere week delay is great for the localisation efforts to translate to different languages that wasnt available in US and Japan releases of Database......

    /Ironic mode

    EDIT: Too late!

Ah well. At least were a/ getting it b/ faster than everything else on PSN.

I'm not going to hate on that.

Well my mate got the database free on a seperate DVD with the game when he preordered the full game, so its bollocks its quite clearly already passed SCEE and its just on a time delay for that offer to run out at certain retailers.
  • Mr_Dodger #8 4 years ago

its just on a time delay for that offer to run out at certain retailers.

    That sounds about right.
  • SeesThroughAll #9 4 years ago

It was submitted to all three regions at the same time but for some reason the SCEE QA process just takes longer than the other two.

    Incompetence?
  • kgthatsme #10 4 years ago

Ive started reading it from the US site, i could be there all summer...
  • Aretak #11 4 years ago

SCEE are too busy rolling around naked in a pool of their own feces to approve anything.
  • The_Inquisitor #12 4 years ago

I got it from the US PSN already but for some reason it isn't recognising my game-completed data so I can't unlock all the juicy bits. Hopefully the EU version will help.
  • GamesProgrammer Verified Games Team Programmer, Eutechnyx Ltd. #13 4 years ago

yeah the saves will have different region/product codes on the file names so only the Euro Database will let you access your main game save.
  • DFawkes #14 4 years ago

    @Aretek
I love the use of the world pool there, implying not only are they rolling in their own faeces, but it has a near liquid consistency. +1 to you sir.

I'm just glad they aren't hyper shafting us by charging for it.
  • Eraser #15 4 years ago

A week's time is something that acceptable IMO.
It's not like they're letting making us wait a year like Nintendo did with Animal Crossing
  • Artemis_Matsas #16 4 years ago

I've downloaded the US version and i have no problem with my save (I own a PAL version of the game of course).

Great database, glad that they are not trying to rip off anyone by demanding a price for it.
  • Shrui #17 4 years ago

I downloaded it from the US store last week hoping it would be nice and accessible intro into MGS4 as a never before player of the MGS series ad generally not knowing much about it.

Got little bit down the time line before realising I had better things to do and I'm likely to never have the patience for this.

And I never got past a name. Big Boss. I mean really, Big Boss? Sorry, I'm sure its been covered elsewhere and its down to translation some time ago etc.

    ....

But honestly. Big Boss. My manager is big and my boss. We call him Dave. MGS should have gone with Dave. Certainly strikes more fear into the hearts than Big Boss.

Ok, I'm in a silly mood. Two days from now I'll be in a field in the south west and can't wait..

I know, bit scarier.... Big Dave! Yeah, kicks ass, runs PMCs and takes long lunches and fag breaks!
  • el_pollo_diablo #18 4 years ago

A one week delay and people are moaning about it.

    What babies.
  • CitizenGeek #19 4 years ago

Don't you need a save file from MGS4 for this to work properly or something?
  • Darren #20 4 years ago

@el_pollo_diablo - We're not being big babies though, just complaining at Sony's incompetence in general at getting stuff out at the same time worldwide, something Microsoft do regularly on the Xbox 360. If they can do it then I'm sure Sony can. It's not only the database we have to wait for but frequently demos, even themes and wallpapers take weeks/months to filter onto the European site. It just makes Sony look as if they really don't care about Europe. I mean the US got the Shivering Isles expansion before Christmas as a download on the PS Store but despite us getting a trailer for it some three months ago we're still waiting for it to appear here. It's just not good enough IMO, it just makes the competition look more competent and like they care about Europe as much as the rest of the world; that we're not just an afterthought.
  • Darren #21 4 years ago

@CitizenGreek - You need a save game from your own PS3 (a downloaded one from GameFAQs, for example, won't work) in order to access the MGS 4 stuff in the database otherwise it will be all masked out by black bars to prevent spoilers for people who haven't yet finished the game.
  • mikeck #22 4 years ago

"I mean the US got the Shivering Isles expansion before Christmas as a download on the PS Store but despite us getting a trailer for it some three months ago we're still waiting for it to appear here."

It's not coming to the EU store, it was not SCEE's fault, this is purely Bethesda throwing toys out of the pram!
  • Goodfella #23 4 years ago

Eh, why are Bethesda not allowing it on the EU stores?
  • Beano #24 4 years ago

"I've downloaded the US version and i have no problem with my save (I own a PAL version of the game of course). "

    Really?

MGS4 Database did not accept any of my saves... and I have completed the game twice!
  • Darren #25 4 years ago

@Beano - The only way a UK save game will work with the US database is if the game is running on a US PS3, that's my understanding anyway. Thus a UK save game will not be recognised by the US or Japanese database on a UK machine, it has to be the UK database. In other words it doesn't matter which version of MGS 4 (US, UK or Japanese) you've been playing, the database has to be for the same territory as the machine you're playing it on.
  • Beano #26 4 years ago

  • mikeck #27 4 years ago

    @goodfella

I'm not sure of the specifics or else I'd share more, but it's something to do with a breakdown in discussions between SCEE and Beths. I heard this from someone who was involved in this, but couldn't reveal anymore.
  • mikeck #28 4 years ago

"It seems to me like its open season on SCEE these-days. Any excuse to piss and moan will do.

Its a freebie, announced a day before its released in the US. This is not something people have been waiting for for months! And the sky is falling in because we have to wait a week...
    "

...what...rationality on a comments section....shock horror!! ;) Well said that poster!

Thanks, mikeck. Sounds like maybe a touch of SCEE incompetance though.
  • KidCactus #30 4 years ago

@Darren: I have a PS3 from the US, and my PAL save file does not work with the database from US either.
  • mikeck #31 4 years ago

"Thanks, mikeck. Sounds like maybe a touch of SCEE incompetance though."

    Yeah maybe ;)
  • mikeck #32 4 years ago

"@Darren: I have a PS3 from the US, and my PAL save file does not work with the database from US either"

It's not linked to the territory of the console, it's the territory of the disc.
  • Laika #33 4 years ago

  • el_pollo_diablo #34 4 years ago

    @Darren

I'm not having a go at you personally here, but every time there's a story about something being late to Europe it's the same comments by the same people about the same thing.

And this time it's not even warranted.
  • GamesConnoisseur #35 4 years ago

Well I ll disagree that we are being overly negative re SCEE unnecessarily here, if this was an isolated incident on its own, sure its a 'spilt milk' quickly dealt with.

I think there are numbers of us who becoming frustrated at the standard and the overall delivery from SCEE for European PSN against that of other stores/regions. Its quite laughable when the options for different languages is already build in and yet still require extra time for 'localisation'? Sure only a measly week in case of Database, but what of other software that literally require little or no localisation but still months behind?!

I am no Xbot and I m simply a multi platform user and we sincerely want to see us Europeans getting services on par or better than other regions. SCEE have said they are aware of the critiicisms and will be wanting to take them on board. So here hoping SCEE is encouraged to do what they can, and that worldwide Sony will give SCEE the tools and support they need to do the job.

Its in no one interest for us to meekly accept getting the third best offering when we are clearly Sony's best and most important market to date by comparasion.
  • Artemis_Matsas #36 4 years ago

Hmmm when i installed the database, the program informed me that it found the save and that it was adjusting accordingly. I really don't know if it works as it should or not. Seeing that some of you guys are having issues, is making me having second thoughts.

I'll just download the European version when it's out just to make sure.
  • el_pollo_diablo #37 4 years ago

    @GamesConnoisseur:

I'm a ps3 owner. I do know what it feels like too.

I just don't think that a) Sony care, and b) mentioning it all the time is any more likely to make them listen.

But I'll stop moaning myself now. :)
  • Shrui #38 4 years ago

It is important that it keeps getting brought up, if we all just stop complaining and buy the stuff IF it ever comes out here then SCEE think they are doing alright.

However, as with most large corporations two things matter. PR & cash. If they keep getting hammered in forums etc then its not endearing people to buy the system (even if they don't care about PSN the negative points about Sony remain). So keep complaining until your happy with the service.

The other option is taking the cash away and giving it straight to SCEA. If your lucky enough to have a Visa or Mastercard then get setup with a virtual card and use the US store. You get some stuff cheaper and you get it when your supposed to. SCEE only get cash from me when they bring it out at the same time as the US.

PSN cards if they appear will I think also help hit the SCEE revenue. The revenue goes down, someone has to do an analysis on why, SCEE get arsed kicked. Situation needs to improve. Don't get me wrong, the cash denial thing will have to happen on a bigger scale to make a dent.

I gave up on complaining a lot, I go for the cash denial option and have a much happier experience for it. I also mention it now and then online in the hope that some more take it up.

I took the plunge and got this game having not played a Metal Gear game since Sons of Libery on PS2. It really is an amazing game - much better than the 8/10 EG gave it in my opinion. This game has production values that other games can only dream of and the action is first rate, especially on harder difficulty levels.
