Mafia II demo dated

Try before you buy.

A demo for upcoming gangster fest Mafia II will be available from 10th August, an advert in videogame trade magazine MCV has revealed.

The demo will be available on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. We're trying to find out what'll be in it.

The game's out 17 days later, on the 27th.

Mafia II is an open-world action-adventure with a difference - it's more of a period drama with a Grand Theft Auto-esque structure than a sandbox.

2K Czech has set out a serious story and keeps control of key ambient elements like the day-and-night cycle in order to accentuate the narrative.

Eurogamer went hands-on earlier this week, and survived to tell the tale. Full review is due soon.

  • ZizouFC #3 2 years ago

Awesome! How do open world game demos work though?
  • jaxon58 #4 2 years ago

Can't wait for this. The first one was pretty special.

@ZizouFC: Wild guess: by only opening up part of the world and just a few missions/vehicles/weapons?

The first Mafia did have an open world, but the missions were linear. The open world merely presented the player with the opportunity to select their own path, be it a road or approaching a building full of enemies. It's likely the demo has the 'shoot up bar' mission we've seen so many times in previews, hands-ons and gameplay footage.

Thanks mate. Wonder if it will be quite a hefty download... Either way - can't wait!

I'm still sceptical about this game, so very much welcome the oportunity to try it out.

I really want it to be good otherwise there is nothing else i want till Dead Rising 2.

  • metalangel #9 2 years ago

No need for a demo here, I'm tempted to not play it lest it spoil some of the main game!

SPEAKING OF WHICH, Eurogamer, that means you too in your review. Don't tell us all the ins and outs of the dramatic moment that had you in tears because now we'll be expecting it.
  • Lee_Morris #10 2 years ago

I hope it's a different as it's being hyped to be. A more linear story in a open world sounds like an intresting prospect. Whether we notice any difference while playing is another story.

    Either way, I can't wait.

I got the first one on PC on release and loved it. Thats when I was a big PC gamer. Dont know what to do with this one as everything I get now is generally all xbox. If its very similar ill probably just get the 360 version this time around.
  • Acrid #12 2 years ago

Can't wait to have a go at this.

If only I had PS+ I might be able to get this 2 days earlier.
  • onezeonx #13 2 years ago

How can I fail if I honestly don't give a fuck?

    This game looks awesome tho
  • menage #14 2 years ago

Nice, game looks good but I can only play so many open world games a year. i never finish em anyway before I grow tired of em. I haven't even completed Red Dead.

Not coming down on Mafia II at all (indeed looking forward to it), but when you put it that way it doesn't sound so different - it sounds like Red Dead Redemption.

Nice to see cool games coming in August. No summer doldrums this year.
  • Retro_ #16 2 years ago

Really looking forward to this. Am tempted by the CE edition too.
  • Loftee #17 2 years ago

Very much looking forward to Mafia 2, pre-ordered months ago (bargain @ £24.99), but I will be avoiding the demo, I don't want to spoil anything so will hang on that extra 17 days for full game.
  • Darren #18 2 years ago

Great that I can try the 360 and PC demos before the game's release but I have the latter version already preordered anyway from GAME. If the 360 version is very good though (which it looks to be from the footage I've seen) then I might switch to that version just for the bonus of playing on a large screen HDTV with full surround sound. Dunno yet though but Red Dead Redemption was amazing on the 360.

    Way to go!
Ima buy it anyways,well...THE DEMO is going to make it even harder to wait for the game!
  • makeamazing #20 2 years ago

Probably wont bother with the demo, i mean why spoil something that i am getting day 1 (though the wife is trying to say i should have it later for my birthday... no way).... I am pretty sure i am going to love this game :)
  • Stop-gap #21 2 years ago

Yay, I'm really hoping this is as good as it looks.
At the risk of spoiling it, I'll grab the demo to see how it performs on my PC.

I really can't believe so many people are looking forward to this. I hope you all enjoy it and everything, and I will try the demo, but the last game was just so poorly made imo.

    EG review from Metacritic :

    50 (review score)

    Eurogamer

We're sorry to heap such bile on a game that we actually like at times, but it's a bit like hearing a bad cover version of a song that you've grown to like that some people still maintain is rubbish.

Let's hope the new one is better.
  • Stop-gap #23 2 years ago

Right, that was Mafia, a game they've had about 8 years worth of other open world games to see how the shortcomings of can be fixed.
It had better be (a lot) better, or that would be tragic :p
  • trip919 #24 2 years ago

Don't need a bloody demo just bring on the game.
  • NewbieZilla #25 2 years ago

Probability of LA Noire in 2010 at approximately 10%.
  • Gromit #26 2 years ago

    Just out of interest :

Is anyone looking forward to the new True Crime game ?

That was another one I was surprised to see get brought back
  • Slipstream #27 2 years ago

I've been following the progression of this one and it does look very impressive. It's 100% single player so I'm hoping it captivates 100% of the time.
  • Verwandlung #28 2 years ago

    Demo = always good.
