Mafia 2 revealed

Details, first shots.

2K Games has announced today that it is bringing Mafia 2 to "next generation consoles" (i.e. 360 and PS3) and PC. A release date has yet to be revealed.

Once again developer Illusion Softworks is behind the wheel to bring us a crime-rife fictional 1940s city with a seedy mob underbelly. Promised this time around are more gunfights and car chases than we can wave a Tommy Gun at, plus a strong story told by believable characters in a strong, cinematic style.

"As the original Mafia was a big success, we are excited to leverage the power of next generation console technology to create an all-new experience, while embracing the elements that resonated with the previous game's fans," said Christoph Hartmann, Don of 2K. "The 'wow' factor of Mafia 2 is definitely the benchmark-setting visual quality and action that you expect to see only in Hollywood movies."

Mafia was originally released on PC in 2002, before being later ported to PS2 and Xbox. Its score has remained a point of contention between us and you lot ever since.

Head over to our Mafia 2 gallery for the very first and very impressive screenshots.

  • KraftWerk #3 5 years ago

Mafia was a really great game. Great narrative and meaningful missions. Well, except the race car mission. I remember I downloaded a savegame and skipped that one, but I went back and finished it later, so it's not really cheating. :D
  • Tyronne #4 5 years ago

I hope they give this the care and attention they gave the last one , as it is one of my all time top games.
  • luigiardingo #5 5 years ago

This was a FANTASTIC game in 2002 and still looks great. Remember buying a GeForce 4-Ti4200 card just to play it!! Those were the day's. Now I'll wait for the
    360 Version of Mafia 2.

The PC original had lots of atmosphere; sure, it had some flaws, but I can't believe you actually awarded that a 4... Let's hope the sequel is based on and improves the PC original and not the -reportedly- console abomination.
  • zuljin #10 5 years ago

    4 out of 10?

    *slap*
  • luigiardingo #11 5 years ago

I remember the part when you had to KILL the Bosses Solicitor, as he'd been talking to the cops. The cut scene, music and dialogue was superb!

Games that people remember 5 years ago, like this just go to show that game reviews don't count as much as the reviewers think.

  • thesnowman #12 5 years ago

Loved the first one on the PC, would I will probably get this on the 360 if they dont bugger it up

    esp me :/

seriously, your reviewer should be ashamed, he couldn't have got it more wrong, a lot of ppl remember Mafia as a truly great game, comparing it to GTA was just stupid.

you guys gave Mafia on the PC a 4/10?

wow..i must have missed that fuzz, if the game wasn't 5 years old, i would've started a riot here!

    OT: Mafia 2!!!! YES!!!!
  • the_dudefather #17 5 years ago

    looks great in the screenshots

loved the original game (escept the level everyone hates)
  • OnlyMe #18 5 years ago

The game looks fantastic! I'm so looking forward to this now. I hope it's got the great atmosphere like the first did. In fact, they don't really need to change much at all, just up the graphics (which they did) and tweak the controls slightly, and provide a great story, like the first.

    I'm so happy now.
  • Mo0k #19 5 years ago

    OH YEAH!

I can't wait for this to be released. Brilliant. Made my day!
  • Wyrm #20 5 years ago

Damn, bring it on! One of the best games around.

    Mafia > GTA
  • whome #21 5 years ago

just hope they've kept the cinematic style of the first and haven't worried too much about the free roam aspect.

the story & characters are what made the first so good, as long as they go for more of the same I'll be a v happy bunny :)
  • captainrentboy #22 5 years ago

Fook me, they are some sweet screenshots, so sweet infact that I find it hard to believe they're ingame, and if they are they must've been touched up a little :/
Wont get too excited about it right now though, as I'm sure it's moooonths away and there's loads of games to be excited about that are coming out soon.

One of the best games ever, and you gave it 4/10...............

  • Salazaar #27 5 years ago

4/10, are you serious? Did you guys just get permanently stuck on that race level or something?

Mafia had to be one of the best games at the time, even if it did take a patch to bring out its best. I must have played it through four or five times!
  • whome #28 5 years ago

"I never played the original but am put off somewhat by the GTA comparisons. "

see, look what that EG muppet did.

Mafia is NOTHING like the GTA games.

it had a very cinematic style, the location was quite big but you never got lost, you could explore as much as you wanted bewteen missions (asuming they wern't timed) but the whole thing was driven by a very strong story (which was superbly written) which kept it moving at the right pace.

PC version was good, Xbox version was horrible, just hope they've worked on that ;)
  • Khanivor #29 5 years ago

Aye, the race was pretty simple really. I got stuck on a bugged mission unfortunately but Mafia was and remains a classic. Glad to hear it's the same dev working on the sequel.
  • Mo0k #30 5 years ago

Khanivor, you could have always downloaded a completed profile to do the rest of the game - just means you know what happens at the end. :)
  • Kiigan #31 5 years ago

As long as it has that awesome racing car level, I'm sold :)

Edit: and the pedestrians crossing the street who'd suddenly materialize under your car.

4/10 is about half what it deserves

really enjoyably quirky alternative to GTA back in the day
  • RaptorM60 #33 5 years ago

Whata hell ... how you could rate the mafia 4/10? :D Well, I bet youll be more excited by Mafia 2 ... ;-)

Reading the Mafia review and the comments just made me laugh, a lot.
    Great stuff.
  • urban #35 5 years ago

mellor i can't do anything but agree, truely amazing game making.
  • DutchDemons #36 5 years ago

I don't wanna read the review of mafia, but am kinda wondering what the HELL eurogamer was thinking when they dished out that 4/10.

did they play it as a GTA game, what the f*Ck. That game is without a doubt in my top 10 games ever. seriously....can someone summarise what is up?

    OT: YES!
  • newt #37 5 years ago

In Gestalt's own words: I think it's one of those games that you either love or hate. There is a great game under there somewhere, but it's buried under so many stupid little design flaws that it's hard to find, and the whole thing just frustrated me after a few hours. Kinda like Hidden & Dangerous really - great idea, flawed implementation.
  • DutchDemons #38 5 years ago

    well....that's just retarded.

maybe they played a really early version...or maybe I played the patched up version.

God....how I loved that game. Crazy EG reviews i tell ya. This (5 years later) proves it:

    EG dunno sh*t about games

    :-D
  • Bursk #39 5 years ago

I played Mafia again recently and didn't enjoy it quite as much as I did all those years ago. I don't think it's aged too well, but as I was playing it I remembered the joy and wonder I had when I'd first played the game.

Quite simply, the person who reviewed Mafia for EG is a twat. A big, hairy twat.
  • skillian #40 5 years ago

    Awesome, loved the first one.

It was the real Godfather game, much like Vice City was the real Scarface game.
  • Benzino #41 5 years ago

omg, they gave the orginal 4/10!!!

    Eurogamer = n00bs =P
  • Syrette #42 5 years ago

Still can't believe they gave the original 4/10.

    Four. Out of ten.

Was this the same genius who gave FIFA Street 8/10 not much later?
  • Waldo #43 5 years ago

The first game was very very good: good story and great atmosphere.

Some of the missions were extremely hard though.
  • Syrette #44 5 years ago

Mafia was hard as hell and I hope this sequel will be as well. To get through that freaking church must have taken me 30 tries. The race was peanuts compared to that.

    Oh my! Yes!

The church mission where you had to get to the roof or something like that right?

Man I loved this game. The whole vibe it had was something else. Superb ending too. Re; the race - there was a way to cheat on that wasn't there? Swear that's what I did.

Mafia was a great game, I hope you fired the person which gave it 4/10. Look at Metacritic and the average score the game got was 88/100, so you must have been very wrong with the low score.

  • dr_swin #47 5 years ago

i really loved the title page and the cinematic birds eye sweep over the town using the in game engine on the introduction lead in. That game had some of the best facial representation and voice acting that I had seen. on reading the review some of the criticisms were valid, but to give a game that had obviously had so much thought and effort poured into it a 4, leaving it languishing alongside the unloved movie tie-ins was a real shame.
  • tobs #48 5 years ago

Wonder how many thousands of sales 4/10 ratings cost this game - could be partly why we have waited so long for a sequel...
  • TheUnionFrag #49 5 years ago

  • Kiigan #50 5 years ago

tobs, I think you over-estimate the importance of a Eurogamer review :) Or indeed any review. If reviews really affected sales in any significant way, we wouldn't have Transformers at the #1 spot in the UK charts right now.

As for Mafia, it was bloody awful in many ways, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy it for what it is and take reviews with a pinch of salt. I hated it first time around (got stuck on the fucking racing car level). Came back to it again later, got the patch to skip the hateful racing car level, and enjoyed it more second time. There's a LOT wrong with, a lot that is just plain broken, but it comes down to how much you're willing to invest and how much you want to have fun. There's definitely fun to be had in Mafia, and some things it did very well. A sequel would be interesting I think.
  • dr_swin #51 5 years ago

yes the racing car level was tricky, but if you just took it easy and drove sensibly without totally flooring it then it was straight forward.
  • Nasty #52 5 years ago

With a new engine for Mafia 2, hopefully Illusion Softworks will have Hidden & Dangerous 3 in the sidelines too \o/
  • spongebob #53 5 years ago

The Godfather definitely should have never been conceived. Disgrace to the iconic movie. Instead they just should've made a fictional gangster game, maybe something like this.
  • Bru-Man #54 5 years ago

Mafia was a great game, apart from the mad, scary dead cow eyes everyone had.
  • symmetry #55 5 years ago

No idea why people got so hacked off at the race bit, I believe I did it on my second attempt.

    Was a little long though.
  • symmetry #56 5 years ago

Actually, now I think back, I think I was using a game-pad for the driving and mouse for the shooting. That would explain a lot.
  • QPRHOOPS81 #57 5 years ago

the race bit was an arse. I remember doing it then the game crashed on the video bit showing you won. I nearly cried!!! did it again first time after that though thank god. You had to be so careful, drive to fast and you lost the back end, too slow and you couldnt win. I also remember doing really well and coming up to the last lap just for a another racer to hit me. Think in all probally took me about 15 tries, it was a bit addictive and you always got so close that you had to have another try till you finally won.
  • whome #58 5 years ago

  • The_Smircher #59 5 years ago

What a good day....bought Bioshock this morning and now this!
This is great news, loved the original game.
The race bit had me stumped until I read that as long you don't crash and don't drive like a maniac then the odds are that you'll end up winning it easily. Worked for me!

    Now...if only they'd announce Max Payne 3...
