Force Unleashed demo on Thursday News

Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

19 August, 2008

Activision Blizzard has told Eurogamer that a demo for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will be available this Thursday on Xbox 360 and PS3 and detailed its contents.

The sampler casts you as the Secret Apprentice, sent by Darth Vader to duff up some Jedi bloke who is smashing up a TIE Fighter construction facility. The Force Grip power will come in handy, and no witnesses can be left alive.

This Dark Side focus carries on throughout Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, where our Secret Apprentice gains strength as Vader's student, flexing infinitely more interesting Dark Side powers such as Force Choke and Force Lightning.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is heading to Xbox 360 and PS3 on 19th September. Alternate versions will be available for Wii, DS, PS2 and PSP on the same day.

Head over to our hands-on first impressions of The Force Unleashed to find out more. [Waves hand.]

It's strange, I was really looking forward to this but now I genuinely couldn't care less.

I'll have to take a break from sucking balls at Unreal Tournament 3 online to download it then.

+1 Quint2020, I also was really wanting it but now it wouldn't even bother me if it's cancelled (won't be though).

Some of the previews I've read are harsh, especially given the usual unwritten rule of not being overly critical in previews. I'll still try it, but I'm not optimistic at the moment.

My enthusiam for this has dropped like house prices, but a demo will go someway to confirming or allaying those fears.

I don't really know why everybody is this negative about something we haven't played yet. Better save that criticism for Too Human I think.

I think it looks fun.

Hooray! \o/ As stated above, this could assist my decision as to whether to continue with my pre-order or cut it off like an unwanted spare toe.

I'm surprised at how much I'm looking forward to playing this... it looks a lot of fun from the recent gameplay videos of GameTrailers (bar some nasty screen tearing from time to time). Nice that we can try the game weeks before its release too. :)

The light saber nonsense (doesn't dismember etc. etc.) really spoiled this for me as many of you know. I think that was a major mistake on Lucas arts side. Even the recent kiddies CG clone wars movie shows the lightsaber disecting everything it hits. Kids aren't dumb and will notice the game is not keeping to the starwars mythos.

I will play the demo but, I doubt that I'm going to be buying this.

Time for another Jedi academy or Dark forces game I think.

Yes they are, otherwise no one would have checked out ep 2 and 3 after that horrendous first one. Medicloryans and whatever.

How's about Force find a couple of new ideas for force powers?

I'm quite liking the demo. Watching stormtroopers squirm and try to grab onto something while you lift em into the air, only to dent the frikkin wall with their face, smash windows and watch the lil R2 droids get sucked out into space before the emergency shutters come down. Also the most fun way of opening doors I've seen in any game :) definately on my to-get list.

edit: disappointed at the lack of Jedi boss fight though :(

Meh. The force powers are dull after about the 3rd use, the lightsaber fighting is horrible and the camera is just useless. Lets not forget the QTE which just was the icing on the mediocre cake.

Yes it does look cool, but it just feels dull.

I'll give it a rent but thats about it.

Yeah, I've just played it too.

Had to stop half an hour in, because it was boring me so much.

It kinda reminds me of Assassin's Creed. Looks darn pretty, but is actually a complete snoozefest.

Think I'll take a raincheck on this one, George.

most of you realize though, that this is just a demo, and a very short limited demo at that.. which means the majority of force powers are not in the game.. and of course classic powers like force lighning, push, and grib are in.. and they are not even that powerful... why? because the apprentice is at the start of the game.. he is an APPRENTICE :)

Personally i think this game will rock. Yes dismemberment could have been in, but it's not.. so why whine about it.

The graphics are stunning and the controls feels allright.. the camera is can be a bit tricky but okay.

Wait for the full game.. it has a ton more to offer than this small limited demo.. but even with this small demo.. the game looks very promising.

I thought it was fun as hell. I spent most of the time just toying with stormtroopers and the Force Grip power. Reminds me of Psi-Ops which I really liked.
Definitely gonna preorder this one.

daedaloz. Its a very short demo that bored me already, doesn't bode well for the full game. Theres only so many stormtroopers I can send flying off walkways or doors I can force push open before I've got all the fun out of it.

Well, I haven't had so much fun with a demo in my whole gaming career. At first I wasn't that impressed, but it quickly grew on me. I'm quite probably nuts, but I replayed the demo 10+ times now, because the gameplay, toying with the force powers and destructible environment is so much fun (Force Grip + throw a stormtrooper into a wall that bends in like hit by a truck = pure win). Euphoria, DMM and Havoc really make each situation different, and the graphics are great, technically it's stunning. Admittedly, the controls and the camera seem a bit clunky at first, but they can be used to, and when you master the targeting system it really does become pure fun.

Also, I'm really amused by people whining over lack of dismemberment. Name one (1) non-modded Star Wars game that had dismemberment. Jedi Knight let you cut off a hand IF you were lucky. Noone seemed to QQ about that back then.

Anyway, I was really cautious about this game for some time, due to my geekrage at LA amping the force so much in this title (bringing down a star destroyer with the Force, anyone?), I wanted it just to experience the story. But this demo proved to be so much fun, over-the-top force didn't bother me that much, now I'm getting it for both the story and the gameplay. Happy me.

EDIT: Oh, and while I loathe QTE's with my whole beating heart, I really, really think this is the first game where they were done right - not too fast, not too slow, basically just a formality to end a fight with a big enemy. Another pleasant surprise, another proof that tastes differ;)
