Exclusive Split/Second powerplay vid

How it works, sexy gameplay footage.

Disney's Black Rock Studio has released a sexy new trailer for its upcoming multiformat racing game Split/Second, and we've got it exclusively for you to check out this morning. Just scroll down for the embed or check out the luxurious HD version over on Eurogamer TV.

Split/Second is an arcade racing game played out in a city designed to be torn apart by explosions - and the twist is that you get to activate the pyrotechnics. The gameplay trailer, narrated by affable game director Nick Baynes, explains and illustrates the "powerplay" concept that drives the explosions.

It's more than a walkthrough of the bulletpoints for the box, however. It's also an opportunity to admire just how those explosions unfold and the effect they have on your rivals in a pair of levels - the Airport lap and another section at the Docks, which you may have caught sight of during the Eurogamer Expo. Crushing the dry dock beneath an oil tanker so it splats your enemies is still wicked.

Check out our recent Split/Second hands-on to see what all the fuss continues to be about, and watch out for more on the game on these pages soon.

They could have made any game after Pure and I would have bought it, but that really does look brilliant. Like ye olde Burnout but with more explosions.

Between this and Blur, this wins for me hands down for the most epic fun looking of the two. Blur just seems really generic and confused next to this...

Why they are releasing Blur near this is beyond me. I would have bought both if they were 6 months apart but no. Sorry Bizarre Creations, Split Second is getting my money now.

It does look and sound fun but the thing which concerns me is how it will work practically. I.e. you bring the house down on everyone and storm into the lead leaving them in your wake ... and err, go on to win easily because they are so far behind OR massive elastic banding ensues to make the races more "fun". I don't like either option.

It looks good. The music in that clip was awful though.

I hope there's nothing equivalent to the blue winged shell in Mario Kart.

While it looks absolutely amazing, I share DrDamn's worries. That's some good points he makes right there.

I'd be worried about this 'will it work as a game' issue had PURE not been the utterly brilliant but oh-too-brief slice of gaming crack that it was. That game showed with big shiny knobs on that they know to put the hours into the important aspects of games.

I wont compare this to Blur but I will admit. This looks fun. Even though its only a few scene and not a whole track to see if its interesting in more than a couple of spots of each track, wich would suck in that case. If this game is all as good as it looks in that video, then i will love it. Racing Hollywood style is never bad. And I mean the visuals in the background ;)

I have confidence that the rubberbanding won't be too ridiculous. It rarely annoyed me back in Burnout 3 where it was pretty necessary most of the time to allow for takedowns.

Blur isn't even on the radar compared to this for me; I never liked PGR for a start, and it basically just looks like that with powers tacked on, like the old Midnight Club multiplayer modes.

I can't stand driving in chase cam, hope they have a bumper cam in there too, one to watch for sure.

cant get my head around the concept in this game.
While visually it looks great, the whole idea is ridiculous, yes its just a game, but it does seem too over the top.
Oh and expect this to be the beginning of a long era of Star Trek style lens flares...

I disagree with the sentiment that it's 'too over the top' or 'silly'. I don't understand how this can possibly be true for a game. It's like watching Crank and saying 'this isn't realistic. Rubbish film'. The point of a game is too follow through on what it sets out to do. Gran Turismo aims to be a simulator, whereas this aims to be more arcade-y. On what scale is it 'too over the top'?

@Jozzy: I was under the impression that the whole race is being televised, and aspects of the track are rigged. Therefore, when you've 'earnt the right', you can tell the operator to perform the action. No rocket launchers required.

Bit like a scripted FlatOut, maybe? This better be 60hz.
