EA to publish 38 Studios' new RPG

Project Mercury for PC/PS3/360.

EA has announced plans to publish 38 Studios' single-player RPG Project Mercury on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Developed by 38 Studios subsidiary Big Huge Games, Project Mercury is set in a universe created by fantasy author R. A. Salvatore, with art direction by Spawn creator Todd McFarlane and creative direction from Ken Rolston, who was lead designer on Elder Scrolls titles Morrowind and Oblivion.

38 Studios is the outfit established by American baseball player Curt Schilling. The company is currently working on an MMORPG codenamed Copernicus, and both Salvatore and McFarlane have been working on that too.

There are no other details on the game, but Schilling - a huge Everquest fan, who invested some of his baseball earnings to set up 38 Studios - said to expect "an enormous world, with heroes and villains and a rich back story from the brilliant minds of R. A., Todd and Ken at its heart".

I like the sound of Project Mercury but the MMO not so much. I think there's going to be an MMO pile-up in a year or two and it's not going to be pretty.

Very interested in the SP RPG. You can keep the MMO though.

"EA to publish a single player RPG..?"

As in, it should be another instead of "a"?

I hope this is going to be good - have been looking for a game to fill the Oblivion-shaped hole for some time now, and I'm not arsed about MMOs so the next Elder Scrolls game is probably not going to plug the gap.

Hopefully the involvement of Ken Rolston will turn this game into the life-destroying addictive experience I totally don't need but would really enjoy right now.

Expectations are high. You cannot get much better than these three -R. A. Salvatore, Todd McFarlane and Ken Rolston- when coming up with new RPG.

    Can't wait.

Please don't be like Oblivion. I totally bummed Morrowind for years but Oblivion utterly failed to grab me.

This could be my wet dream come true. I loved Everquest and played for years, but now to hear the 360 could be getting a EQ inspired single player Oblivion type RPG is amazing. Keep it coming!
