E3: MGS: Rising is multiplatform

SCEA boss confirms PS3 version.

Sony US boss Jack Tretton has confirmed a PS3 version of Metal Gear Solid: Rising.

Hideo Kojima unveiled the game for Xbox 360 during the Microsoft E3 conference, leaving a fog of doubt surrounding the platforms.

"Spoke to Tretton - he confirmed Metal Gear Rising is absolutely coming to PS3 alongside Xbox 360," Tweeted Geoff Keighley, presenter of GameTrailers TV (spotted by the twitchy fly-eye of vg247).

No dates have been mentioned for Rising. All we know so far is that Solid Snake will not be the central character. Instead, we'll control metal-mouth Raiden, who's been a franchise familiar for years and has some adept moves of his own. Nice hair, too.

Swagger over to Eurogamer TV for the Metal Gear Solid: Rising E3 teaser.

Was no other option really - you can't deny Japan a new Metal Gear game can you?
  • AphoticCosmos #2 3 years ago

Worst kept secret since . . . oh - PSP Go.
  • coolbritannia #3 3 years ago

Must still piss Sony off though.
  • Triggerhappytel #4 3 years ago

Well, there's the biggest non-surprise of the show.

MS have a habit of really pushing multi-format titles in their presentations. I would rather they focused on the exclusive stuff.
  • Bloodhunter #5 3 years ago

this game isnt really a true sequel for MGS, MGS5 will be called MGS5...

and since Kojima is working on both, and he said that he was going to be completely involved with Peacewalker, does this mean he'll be less involved with Rising?

    Snake is his favourite afterall
  • Dunk_13 #6 3 years ago

as someone else on this site said.

microsoft didnt shout exlusive on stage so it isnt
  • Bealsy #7 3 years ago

Well at least now I get to choose between a prettier version with 360 controller, or a vaseline covered version with a better controller...
  • Vistrix #8 3 years ago

Kojima basically screwed Microsoft over. He doesnt even seem too enthusiastic about the project (is he even involved??).
  • Dunk_13 #9 3 years ago

he didnt screw microsoft over, after kojima's relationship with sony nobody will ever expect an exclusive xbox game from them

he wont be enthusiastic as, its not a stealth game, he created the stealth game genre and now i presume konami have made him make a spin off that isnt stealth and he probably would still prefer to have some input than let another konami studio fuck it up

Bealsy - given this will probably be built on the MGS4 engine, it's unlikely to be 'vaseline covered' on PS3.

Peace Walker: True sequel to Snake Eater and Portable Ops, with Big Boss in it. Stealth-based gameplay. We will see the creation of the Outer Heavens in this.

Rising: Spin-off. Nothing wrong with that, and I love the Raiden character even in MGS2. Not stealth-based.

So Sony get the true sequel on PSP AND MGS lite...there's a surprise :)
  • mcwildcard #15 3 years ago

Odd that Sony didn't mention this at all in their conference, especially seeing as Kojima was on stage.
  • MeBrains #16 3 years ago

@dunk_13: no, only the following was mentioned:

    18:04:13 -

Schappert's back. He says everything we're about to see will be available "only on Xbox 360."

so, true, no mention of "exlusive" there.

not the first time they mention exclusive, while it is not.

To be fair to MS, it was quite obvious they were referring to those 5 or so games which followed directly after 5 or so multiplatform games. Kojima's appearance was quite seperate from that, and as other's have pointed out, if it had been exclusive Don Mattrick would not have been able to shut up about it.
  • makeamazing #19 3 years ago

I think Sony probably didnt mention it, mostly not to cause trouble for Kojima, as the guy is doing multiplatform stuff... I think Sony will be pleased how its turned out in the end. MS did all the PR, but its still coming out on the PS3..and they get the extra games... so win win from that point of view.

I don't really care that it isn't stealth based

I didn't really use stealth much in mgs4 anyway

charge in, shoot some people, take ration, shoot some more people, charge off towards the next area with half an army on my arse

    get to next area, repeat

*btw when I say charge I mean limp awkwardly obviously
  • MeBrains #21 3 years ago

fubdub: to me it wasn't clear that "everything you are about to see is only on 360" only was for the first few games, but maybe that is the downside of only reading through transcripts as it happens. maybe you should get the emotions with it. maybe he did mention "the next few games are "only on 360"" and wasn't it typed down...

    anyhows. all's clear now.
  • DrDamn #22 3 years ago

    @MeBrains
I was watching and thought he said "Everything from here on is exclusive" (or words to that effect). There was certainly some implication there but I might have misheard.

Was this the game which had meant they had to add an extra 5 minutes to the presentation? Might explain the confusion if it was shoe horned in at the last minute.
  • bad09 #23 3 years ago

Well good everyone gets it, but it still must burn Sony. GTA, Tekken, MGS (OK it's not a main game but still). Sony's new IP's are cool but those series defined PS once.
  • RedSparrows #24 3 years ago

I like the casual 'oh but it's not the REAL next MGS' and 'oh but it's alright, it won't be as good as...cos...er' interlaced here.

honestly, if it actually matters to you negatively that an MGS is appearing on 360 AS WELL AS PS3, then you have a problem.

In their press conference, MS were deliberately ambiguous about the MGSR exclusivity. It's marketing.
Sony did the same thing by mixing exclusives with multi-platform titles in the "summary videos", trying to confuse people.
  • MeBrains #26 3 years ago

@seesthoughall: of course it is marketing. yet, sony did not say all are exclusive, while MS arguably did. well anyhows. (will try to be) moving on now.
  • SeesThroughAll #27 3 years ago

Of course, MeBrains. The bottom line is, they're all salesmen.
  • coomber #28 3 years ago

Where has all this talk of MGS:R *not* being a stealth game come from? Not saying it's wrong, it's just I haven't seen that anywhere.
  • Salato #29 3 years ago

Coomber I think it's from the subtitle being "Lightning Bolt Action" rather than the usual "Tactical Espionage Action". Also based on the way Raiden appeared in MGS4, much more focused on action than stealth. Personally I think Rising will be much more action based, but I don't doubt that it will involve some stealth aspects as well in certain areas.

    This being multi-platform i.e. on the PS3 wasn't a surprise at all.

And my opinion of why Sony didn't mention it is that they knew MS was going to announce it first and would make a big deal of it. Announcing it again would have been kind of a "me too" reaction, so they may have decided to just let Kojima & Konami handle the announcements rather than include it among their list. As it stands, Sony had an enormous AAA list to announce anyway, so not including a multi-plat MGS didn't make too much of a difference for them. For MS, it was a big thing, as except for Natal, most of their big announcements were multi-plats (from my perspective - after Halo 3, I don't have a very high opinion of the franchise)

@man.the.king: Everything Kojima said at both presentations was previously agreed with both MS and Sony. It just sounds to me like he did his best to keep both manufacturers happy.
  • man.the.king #32 3 years ago

    @SeesThroughAll

Oh I'm not saying they weren't. I'm just trying to come up with a reason why Sony decided not to make a big announcement of it amongst their (admittedly impressive) roster this E3.
