Doom 4 "three times" Rage visual quality

At 30 frames-per-second, says Carmack.

Id Software didn't show Doom 4 during its press conference at QuakeCon this year, but co-founder and technical director John Carmack did claim that the game would look much better than current project Rage.

Doom will "not be another four-year development period", said Carmack, but will have "three times the graphics richness" because it runs at 30 frames-per-second, rather than 60, which Rage targets.

"You can expect the Doom game to look like it's developed with the next-generation graphics technology," said Carmack.

Carmack later said clarified his comments, adding that the PC would have advanced so much by the time Doom 4 comes out that while the game will be 30fps locked on console, it could be 60fps or higher on PC, so "PC will be able to crow a bit over the consoles again".

Todd Hollenshead, id CEO, couldn't say much about the game. "I can tell you there will be guns. I can tell you there will be blood. I can tell you there will be demons. I can tell you there will be gibs. In other words, I can tell you it's going to be kickass, because it couldn't be anything else right?" he joked.

He asked the audience when it would be out. "When it's done," everyone shouted. He nodded. It's also based on id Tech 5, which means it's due on PS3, 360 and PC.

Earlier we asked Rage project lead Tim Willits about Doom 4, which is being headed up by a team run by Kevin Cloud. "I think during the conference when Todd talks about it, he's just going to have the Doom logo up," he said. So it proved. So there's nothing tangible to see, we asked? "No, no. It's way early."

We're hoping to speak to Kevin Cloud tomorrow about Doom 4, for which id is currently hiring, so we'll let you know more as we hear it.

So if there's nothing to show off why the fraking hell are they making such big noise about it!
Is this the news I stood up for?! Bloody bastrards...
...yes, I admit I'm kind of frustrated because I still don't have my Quake Live beta key:-(

Nice to hear it's coming to consoles. I can't imagine what they're going to do differently from Doom III though, they always seemed pretty pleased with it in interviews so don't be surprised to see just a prettier version of that game, probably with a few more enemies and more expansive environments with this new tech.

I hope whatever place you'll be romping through as the doom marine will have more interesting PDA-mails than Doom III. Some of them were not bad (the voice-recording you found in hell made by one of the scientists is excellent), but most were just walls of text you had to find a three-digit code in. Or worse, a minute-long sound clip that you couldn't fast-forward just because you really needed the code for the next damn locker. :p

    Wow, next-gen brown!

I'm actually quite excited already! Just the sheer mentioned of another Doom!

"that the PC would have advanced so much by the time Doom 4 comes out"

So we won't see it for years is what he's saying ;)

Still whenever Doom 4 hits it's a day one purchase.

So up the detail? No, go back and so the same as Mega Man 9 - traditional graphics (high-res and with looking up and down), and hundreds of sprites to battle. As much as I liked Doom 3, it wasn't Doom. Doom needs to be hectic, not a series of small skirmishes.

    "three times the graphics richness"

Oh, good grief. Do sod off and take your spouty rubbish with you......

Exactly - no more of this "one or two enemies at a time" crap. The best moments in Doom/Doom II were when you walked into a room full of dozens of enemies.
  • bad09 #13 4 years ago

    @ m0thr4

Nah the best moments were when you walk into an empty room pick up a key THEN dozens of enemies teleport in and scare the crap out of ya!

After the crud that was Doom 3, with it's piss poor level design and cheap ass hide enemies behind scenery moments. I don't believe a word of this crap. 3 times the graphics richness of Rage. Really? On what bloody hardware mate! Certainly not a 360 or PS3!

Doom 4 will be best for PC. You can adjust your own settings, tweak the game and so on and have nice fps with the best graphics.

    Hehe, nice touch :D

Personally, having played CoD4, I'd rather have the game at 60FPS, but I did love teh Doom 3, so I can't wait for 4!

    "Wow, next-gen brown!"

This is why we spend £500+ on fancy high-def screens eh? To see the most realistic and detailed browns imaginable! Even mud can't compare!

    ""Wow, next-gen brown!"

Doom has always been a dark game, long before it became fashionable.

"Personally, having played CoD4, I'd rather have the game at 60FPS, but I did love teh Doom 3, so I can't wait for 4! "

60 fps should be the absolute standard. That the majority of console games still run at 30 has been my biggest disappointment this generation.
  • peak_performance #24 4 years ago

I think D4 will run at 30hz to show developers and gamers what Id Tech 5 can do at a stable framerate. So it goes like this: Rage runs at 60hz, looks stunning (right now, it does though some direct feed media would be great). Then D4 comes along at 30hz and haeds imlpode.!!:

A, rantings and dreams of an Id fanboy...

Good job he said 'fraking' then eh?
  • BobsUncle #27 4 years ago

So in the process of saying 'Fraking' you don't say 'Frak' first I suppose?

You know what I mean anyway. It's a shit term that they invented for that shit remake of Battlestar Gallactica just because they couldn't say fuck. But whenever I see them say it I just wince and think "Well just don't swear if you can't!".
  • subtlesnake #28 4 years ago

"I don't believe a word of this crap. 3 times the graphics richness of Rage. Really? On what bloody hardware mate! Certainly not a 360 or PS3! "

It's running at half the framerate, so they can render at double the detail (yes, even on the 360). Add in smaller scale environments, and 3 times the detail isn't an impossibility.

Carmack isn't saying it will look 3 times better though, because as you get closer to photo-realism increases in graphical fidelity become less perceptible.

god, are they developing it separately, or developing doom 4 on 1 system and port it to 2 other? that would suck royal ass. it better have separate ui for the console and pc versions :( or I will be sad.
  • trixter©ú #30 4 years ago

Such negativity to Doom 3...I personally loved it and Resurrection of Evil. I would prefer some larger environments with time bigger and badder assed run-of-the-mill demons - sending them in droves would be nice too (those scenes where you have to run outside between airlocks - they could pump up near a hundred demons waiting there for you to come along). For now though Doom 3 is still one of the nicest looking games I've played.

Actually there are always so many ways to make games more enjoyable but everyone has a different opinion - putting in something that a certain group of fans will love will most likely be hated by another group. As long as Id decide to stick to their guns and not give into the call of the "general any fps gamer" group because that group most likely never even played Doom 3 to the end.
  • hiddenranbir #31 3 years ago

Why not have games run between 30 and 60?
