Dead Rising plays dress-up
New costumes to download.
To celebrate Dead Rising selling over one million copies, Capcom has decided to release some new costumes, themes and pictures on Xbox Live.
The fresh duds consist of a white suit, a stripey outfit, and an accountant getup. All are free and will show up in-game after you download the key for each. It's important to look good when stomping through hordes of enemies, you know.
Both of the Jack & Comic and Image Board themes will set you back 150 points, however, or you can fork out 50 points for a Rat Man or Cute picture pack.
Dead Rising was released last September on Xbox 360 and earned itself fifth place in our game of the year awards. It puts you in the shoes of photographer Frank, who soon finds himself in a Dawn of the Dead inspired zombie outbreak. Tongue-in-cheek prevails throughout, and the assortment of gory accessories you can tackle the shambling undead with is utterly delectable.
It's dirt-cheap these days, just GBP 17.99 on Play.com, so we thoroughly suggest you give it a go.
Head over to our Dead Rising review if you're still not convinced.

For 108k I highly doubt it's just an "unlock", as that'd be at most a couple of bits. Sounds more like a texture pack which is added onto skins for costumes which already exist.

already died once (get sent back to security office) does it matter too much?

If that's the case, then it's stupid that they wait 9 months to allow us access to what we've already paid for.
This ridiculous "Let's hide it away on the disc and force them to pay us more so they can access it" bullshit seems to be getting more and more common. It's as morally reprehensible in my eyes as someone grabbing me in alley and robbing my wallet.
Dead Rising obviously doesn't apply as the content is free anyway, but it's still stupid if it's already on the disc. But then what about those who don't have an internet connection? Do they not deserve access to what they already have on the disc?
Whoever started this trend needs a firm twatting right on the jaw....

edit: Is it not true that these costumes are already available in the stores in the mall. The unlock code just allows you to wear them straight from the lockers in the security office? So this content is available to all right from the get-go regardless?

A lot of people have problems with the game because they just go straight into the story missions like they would any other game. But it is infinitely more enjoyable, as well as a lot less frustrating if you use the above method, so much as to the point where I'm convinced that's how Capcom designed the game to be played.
edit : Oh, and don't try and save all the survivors and complete all the cases in one playthrough, as it's virtually impossible. If you are some kind of gaming god, then by all means attempt to rescue all (is it 30 or 50?) survivors, but that is still fooking hard! This is another of the mistakes a lot of people make before coming on the old interweb and whining about how brutal and unfair the game is.
For example, if you see a survivor, but it looks like you might have trouble saving them or getting them to the safe area, then leave them. Think of it like if the situation happened in real-life, and that it is not always the case that you'll always be able to save everyone. This is another mistake that people make, ie, think of it as a normal game and try to save everyone because they think they are supposed to. A large part of the game is making your own choices.
It has a structure completely unlike any other game, and so should be approached in a completely different way to other games. Play through it however you feel like, just having fun and levelling up, while saving the odd survivor here and there, and you'll find it is one of the enjoyable games you'll ever play.

"It doesn't matter if its on the disc or not, you haven't paid for it yet, dumbass."
PLEASE do some kind of basic economics and business course (there are probably free ones online) that covers sales and cashflow and stop whining like idiots.
Jesus! Every. Single. Time.

"For 108k I highly doubt it's just an "unlock", as that'd be at most a couple of bits."
On those same lines however, I doubt that 3 whole characters are a mere 108k.
@SomaticSense
"If that's the case, then it's stupid that they wait 9 months to allow us access to what we've already paid for."
You haven't paid for that content. They could have left it locked forever. Nice of them anyway to give it away for free.
"Dead Rising obviously doesn't apply as the content is free anyway, but it's still stupid if it's already on the disc. But then what about those who don't have an internet connection? Do they not deserve access to what they already have on the disc?"
No. You get what you pay for - which is the content unlocked on the disc that you own. You know what you are paying for. If they decide to release an addon or an extra, then noone is forcing you to buy/download this. As for people with no internet, thats like someone complaining to the government they can't try out their Ferrari at the full 200mph.
A patch fixing bugs which should have been fixed in the release would be a different matter.

"It's as morally reprehensible in my eyes as someone grabbing me in alley and robbing my wallet."
The reason things appear that way to you is that you simply don't understand the concept. In the example you use, your wallet BELONGS TO YOU. So when someone takes it from you, that is theft.
The extra content (that just so happens to be on the disc instead of a server) does NOT belong to you.
Thats the difference. Thats it. It doesn't get any simpler than that.
Another way to view this is one of convenience, the dev is doing you a favour in fact. "We though you might be interested in buying this extra content", they say. "Should you want to buy it, you don't even have to wait for it to download as we've brought it to you". "Thanks very much" you say.
Imagine a salesman comes to your door. Its convenient that he came to your door right? he saved you a journey to the shops right? Or do you demand he hand over his wares because they he is stood on your doorstep and you "already paid for it when I bought my house"?
I'm all out of metahpors for now. I'm not sure how else to push understanding into people's heads.

@SomaticSense: Not that discussion again. EVERY developer develops future content alraedy before the game is out. It makes absolutely no difference if they put it on the CD or not. What difference does it make if they decide to hold content back to sell it later by either not putting it on the disc or locking it on the disc. It makes absolutely no difference at all because you would have paid for it anyway regardless if you download it later or simply unlock it on the disc.

I seriously doubt that. Sure it happens lots of times. But I don't think Betehsda made every single add-on or extra bit beforehand. Or multiplayer maps?

On the other hand - just for some costumes? No thanks!
And im certainly not paying for them!
Give me some more cool weaponry/levels, and i'll be interested.

Ummm... you did read the article, right?

"I seriously doubt that. Sure it happens lots of times."
You can doubt all you want, it won't make it false. Last few weeks before a game goes master and first few weeks after beforre starting a new project, this is what happens most of the time.
You don't simply switch projects on a one day to another basis, and you can't really modify code, so more often than not this is spent doing things like, random levels, random extra art, characters, etc.
"But I don't think Betehsda made every single add-on or extra bit beforehand. Or multiplayer maps?"
I think you're confusing "there is almost always some additions made" with "ALL additions are made before launch". I former is practically always true, the latter rarely if ever.

funnier than any other post on teh entire intarwab.

I'll prolly get them then, but hardly going to make a huge difference to the gameplay.
Gives me an excuse to play thru again though (yay!)

I dunno .. I kinda agree - it's currently still my favourite game of this last year. And certainly better than any other game i've played on 360 or wii so far.

Holding back content just to nickel and dime your costumers to death is a shit business model.
But gamers are like crack addicts and let them selfs be exploited in this way. Too many people fall for it and buy shitty downloads for outrages prices so publishers keep on doing it.
For everybody else who doesn't fall into the trap, they're missing out on game content they would have otherwise just gotten through the initial purchase, back when "premium downloads" didn't exist yet.
It's a part of the next generation that sucks allot of balls.
Oh sure, it all sounded nice when they suggested you would get actual new levels and content that was worth the money.
But here's the catch: it takes time to develop those things and most games simply don't live long enough for the developers to bother doing that.
So in allot of cases we simply get little left over things that aren't worth the money or even stuff that was already on the disc.
Pointless downloads that serve no other purpose then to increase the cost of gaming while getting little in return for it.
If only gamers would wise up to it, stop buying the crap, then publishers would stop and perhaps make things that were actually worth something.

Dead Rising needs a "Key to the Mall" Mode, like the Ultimate Cheat Mode in Crackdown.
