Capcom confirms Dead Rising 2

It's coming to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Capcom has confirmed a sequel to zombie shooter Dead Rising is in development.

Dead Rising 2 is set several years after the first game. Turns out no one managed to contain that pesky old zombie virus, and it's spread throughout the US.

The press release promises Dead Rising 2 will take the series to "a whole new level", originally, with "tens of thousands" of zombies to batter. There's an all-new "gambling paradise" called Fortune City to explore, plus new objects to use as deadly weapons.

The game is being developed in partnership with Canadian studio Blue Castle Games, who previously produced baseball title The Biggs. Some members of the original Dead Rising Team will help out, including Keiji Inafune - said to be playing " an active role" the development process.

Dead Rising 2 is in development for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, with a release date yet to be announced.

I'm sceptical about exactly what they'll be able to do that's new in this one. Surely there's only so many different ways to smack a zombie over the head with a [insert everyday household object here]

Still gonna be damn fun! Looking forward to this one as DR was a worthy game that some gamers love to hate! Just because of one forced save game that was actually so intergral to the game. Getting you to restart but with skills retained and choosing different actions/routes during same timeline.

Wondered if this would be expanded on for the sequel or scrapped? Hoping they can build on it as otherwise would be very similar to other games perhaps?

Yes, let's port the sequel to a game which hasn't been released on a PC to the PC.

I hope they've fixed all the problems of the first one, like the timed missions, idiotic AI, stupid save system, etc.

I notice from the screenshots the guy isn't carrying a camera so having to take photos of the zombie mayhem seems to be out this time...
  • asphaltcowboy #15 3 years ago

ChthonicEcho: Surely that applies to the PS3 as well, no?

Yeah, it's not ideal, but I'd rather have the sequel than nothing at all. Can't imagine I've missed a lot of story.

As long as it's a decent port and doesn't come with some really ugly DRM then I will forgive them for wronging me so badly with the first game ;)

Two very simple improvements they could make, automatically making it considerably better:

No more walkie-talky/phone nonsense badgering on about your mission, even if I ignored it you would get a grumpy NPC afterwards. I wanna kill zombies, stop hassling me.

Secondly, the ridiculous old school mob spawning. You clear an area (or whatever), you walk through a door and back again, boom all the mobs have respawned.

Glad this is coming to PC though.

Edit: Seen Photoboy's post, yeah the save system sucked too.

As long as they keep our photographer hero (hopefully cured of the pesky near zombi condition) then we're all good here!

Increase the silly font size while you are at it, please...

I'm a PC fanboy, care only about the PC. And don't call me Shirley.

    The screenshots look awesome!

The very strict time structure ruined the experience for me.
Still, I have the LE, and I think it'll be worth a lot of money in a couple of years.

Awesome! The first game is still a classic and I hope they keep the save system. They already have said they won't but maybe they will change their minds.... it was integral to the experience in my view as the tension completely melts away if you can just reload any save point at any time to get that person you missed or mission you failed. The whole point of the game was to replay it again and again ad see what different outcomes you could get.

PLEASE fix the dim witted control system!

Also, there should be a proper infinite mode and not some time decreasing health type affair.

I m not often that dissing, but man wake up! The save game system was intergral to how this particular game works! Multi save would really destroy the structure of having you trying out something but failing and missing timeline but with experiences retained and restarting stronger. Multi save just mean everyone would carry on redoing their mistake but be more and more frustrated as the later stages are too hard.

You needed to build up skills and knowledge of where things will happen and prioritise what you would do. Look at the classy film Groundhog Day? It would not fucking work as it is if the weather man can just walk out of town and enter tomorrow!

I for hell hope they keep the save system for the sequel but Capcom needs to give more reward/motivitation as well as enabling hard to please gamers to opt for an easy option and go through game in one sitting!

Well, this goes straight onto my automatic-buy list. Loved the first one, including the save-system... Though the inventory system could use a tune-up... and I think respawns should be a feature of in-game events, rather than an automatic occurrence. Still, VERY happy about this bit of news :-)

Capcom Confirm Dead Rising 2 - \o/ fuck yeah!!

"...who previously produced baseball title The Biggs"

    erm what the fuck?

    /worried.
  • muscleblade #31 3 years ago

With a different savesystem the game would take 3 hours to complete. Restarting with the stats intact was one of the things that made the game so good.

"And don't respawn everything when I leave an area"

I fully agree on this issue though.

If they change the save system, this game will be shit.

    There, I said it!

Like the other guy mentioned, it was integral to the way the whole game worked and the time based nature of it. You weren't supposed to go through the game rescuing everybody and doing all the missions at the first attempt. If they had your usual bog standard save system they would've had to change the whole structure of the game, lessening the effect in the process. The save system was what made it so immersive.

edit: I do hope they don't pull anything like the convicts again though. I've no problem with the respawning hordes, but I'd gladly take a lawnmower to the dick who thought that respawning the convicts, or even having them there at all, was a good idea.

No convicts, or any variation of tyvm.

Dead Rising 2? Count me in, I love the first game.

Convicts aren't that hard, actually. Just get them stuck behind a tree, pick away the gunner, get the Heavy Machine Gun, then the driver and baseball guy et voila - the best non-bonus weapon and vehicle are yours. They only re-spawn two times - time their kills right and you'll never have to worry about them while aiding survivors (except during the first encounter where it's mandatory).

Let's just hope the Control Whining(tm) is kept to a minimum this time because oh noes, what if the devs didn't next gen them for this part?!
