Call of Duty 4 patched for 360

PS3 version being tested at IW.

Call of Duty 4 on 360 has been patched (makes sense - it was rubbish! Eh? Who's with me?) to include new kill cams, host migration, and lots of other neat tweaks.

Apparently it's in final internal testing for PS3 too (as opposed to being in certificaiton, as we previously reported - sorry about that).

So what else is new? The Infinity Ward forums has the list, with host migration probably the most interesting - it allows everyone in a game group to stay together when the host tumbles off the Internet.

There's also improved sniper and ACOG scopes, an upgraded spectator cam, and a quick mute opti--

[That's a surprisingly good joke for a Friday. Read the IW forums for more. - Ed]

"we haven't got a retail PS3 at the office at the moment"

    saywah? who "borrowed" it?

    Yay ACOG fix!

Hopefully this makes using the R700 worthwhile, and hopefully make my uncommon tactic of ACOG'd snipers as railguns a little less random.

    Hurrah.

EDIT: having tried it, it's still not quite there with the bullets going where you'd reasonably expect them to, but I suspect thats down to lag more than anything.

you can shut up the guy who always seems to find it funny to sing into his mic or cover up for his lack of skill by telling you how to play Domination his way.

Jesus, I think that is me - I'm always lecturing people on how to play Domination.

Usually along the lines of "You have to capture the flags to score points, you f***ing morons, if you want to sit and snipe, why not play f***ing Team Deathmatch!"

Has really helped my Rep, too, which has rocketed up to 23% avoidance.

Its quite a good patch isn't it? actual changes to the way you play the game (kil cam and snipe)

    not just bug fixes

    I wish they'd include a co-op patch, it'd make the game perfect.

They don't have a retail PS3 because it's gay and Krudster and Tom are well known XBox fanboys. That's why they fired Shinji.Sony scum he was.
  • Xerx3s #10 4 years ago

Shinji was fired? When did this happen? I leave for 2 months abroad and the world as we know it ends.
  • bdc #11 4 years ago

Any rumble on PS3 version yet?
  • Halo.Jones #12 4 years ago

You really should read the posting... It's not in test at Sony, it's still undergoing internal testing at IW and then will get sent off to SCE.

  • agparrot #13 4 years ago

/prepares to play uber-current 360 version, lording it up over behind-the-times PS3 paeons.

I heard from SCEE that it was already in testing at Sony. The post on the IW forums about the fixes is from Feb 12th. Could be wrong though, I agree.

"They don't have a retail PS3 because it's gay and Krudster and Tom are well known XBox fanboys. That's why they fired Shinji.Sony scum he was."

Haha. We don't have a retail PS3 at the office because mine and Kristan's are both at home - mine so I can play Burnout and Kristan's so he can watch rubbish Blu-ray films like Deja Vu :)

Rob left EG full-time over a year ago but has been a contributor since then. I believe we've published 4 or 5 of his pieces this week, Alone in the Dark being the latest. Obviously he was fired though, because he's a twat.

Even if you have a TEST unit, it will still detect that a patch is available when you boot the game. However you'll get an authentication error when it attempts to install the update.

Hows this quick mute work then?
  • themorganator #18 4 years ago

  • lucasmax #19 4 years ago

hmmm, we have to wait like 5 months for a patch and it just happens to come out the same day as frontlines....
  • t8yman #20 4 years ago

    @ mr brett

the quick mute is fucking useless, you push the "back" button during the game, highlight the player name and toggle mute with a. you cant do it in lobby, and when the match ends - so does the mute.

I was in a lobby last night with 2 of the most annoying, loud speaking italians, "great, I'll check out the quick mute" - aaaaaahhhhhhhh bliss.

match ends, annoying italians back again.

    muted the old way.

    job done.

pointless. far easier to put "mute" under the "player options" choices in lobby.

other than that, the patch does seem to be doing what it claims.
  • Xerx3s #21 4 years ago

t8yman: Couldn't have said it better. Whoever made that design call is a fucking muppet. They delayed the patch so long that you would expect it to be half decent but nooooo! The mute option was designed by an idiot, the lag is worse than before, we still drop out of 10 games for every game that we play, etc. But oh look! We have new kill cams now so it's all right that we don't get to enjoy them because it's a massive lag fest (IF we even get into a game).

Frontlines becomes more and more attractive.
  • mainaman #22 4 years ago

The sniper accuracy is definitively improved, now only a lag can get in the way of a good shot.

Now the Barret is a bad-ass gun,semi-auto AND one-shot kill, even the recoiless M21 seems lame, cause it can take three shots to drop a motherfucker.

Kill Cam is nice and as for the increased lag and loading some people are reporting, there is an explanation at COD forums about that relating to the way pathes affect system and server performance-only temporary.

All in all, good job, although it may be late and dropouts are still common.

  • SomaticSense #23 4 years ago

    Nice, but way too late.

Bored of it, and unless they sort the annoying bullet lag, constantly failing matchmaking, and frequent disconnections, then I won't be going back anytime soon. Seeing as this update sounds like it's done nothing to solve those problems, then I couldn't give a toss really until they release some new maps.
  • miiiguel #24 4 years ago

The "block communications" in Live works flawlessly. why this stress with the mute ?
  • miiiguel #25 4 years ago

Shinji once deleted some posts because ppl was talking some true shit about PS3.
  • t8yman #26 4 years ago

    @miiguel

because its a pointless feature, if they wanted a "quick mute" option in the game, they could at least make it work properly.
and because the "mute" feature via the gamercard can take a good 20-30 seconds to execute in game, which we all know can be the difference between 1st and last in a tight game.

there are far more important improvements they could have implemented in the patch, like not spawning you directly into a game that is finishing in 20 seconds, making the top 3 finishers in a (FFA) match victors, instead of a "defeat" for anyone not finishing first, yet the shittest player in a winning team in a TDM game still gets a win stat. I'm not really a stat whore, but my stats would look utterly shit (as a free for all addict) against a really shite player who only played TDM but generally got on the winning side by luck alone.

dont get me wrong, I still love the game to bits, eagerly awaiting new maps, but just sad to see that it could be so much better.

"and because the "mute" feature via the gamercard can take a good 20-30 seconds"
Yeah..., I know, but the sweet thing is, it is permanent, like forever and ever, and ever... :), no text messages nothing, the dude simply vanishes.

  • t8yman #28 4 years ago

I know miiguel, so why did they even bother adding the stupid "quick mute" option, if its so half arsed?

the IW forums are awash with people moaning about the host migration (which admittedly is shite), and host selection issues. apparently, if there are 7 europeans and one yank in the lobby, the yank gets host 99% of the time, regalrdless of his connection quality.

from what I have read in the last hour os so, they have made the game worse, not better.

  • asphaltcowboy #30 4 years ago

Maybe they thought you could use the quick mute to get rid of them quickly and once the match has finished, you can go and use the more permanent solution to the problem? Hardly a massive deal. Wouldn't surprise me if that was the logic behind the system!
  • Mugwum Verified Operations Director, Eurogamer Network #31 4 years ago

Having spoken to someone else at Sony about this, it's obvious I was wrong about the PS3 patch being in certification, so I've updated the story to make that clear. Sorry for the misleading information.

  • TheRealBadabing #33 4 years ago

Anyone know what Nick-JD's GT is?

I think we know why we need to know.
  • TitusCrow #34 4 years ago

nick- jd you are hardcore! dont take no shit from no one.

no but serious stop being a tosser! if you want great players round about you join up with a clan. when you play on public servers sometimes your team mates play crap and u carry them sometimes u play crap and they take in the slack, get a sense of humor ffs..
  • Fab4 #35 4 years ago

Piss poor patch as well. They seem intent on making it more and more like CoD2. You can now snipe at range without holding your breath...might as well remove the Iron Lungs perk..its now redundant.

Host migration? You are having a giraffe. New spawns? Real nice...thats tactics out the window then, because it seems the enemy are just as likely to spawn a few feet behind you.
  • RustyBullet #36 4 years ago

Host migration is a joke. We play as a team of 9 and not to blow my own trumpet but we kick ass. We are rarely beat and when we give someone a good thrashing the usual thing for them to do is quit the game which if we were not hosting, then game over. To me host migration should work the same as halo if the host drops out give it to someone else. If that means a temperal pause in the game so be it. Apart from that all the other inclusions are good.

Infinity Ward decided that MW3 will immediately follow the events of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Every country is under attack, the press won't like Call of Duty: MW3 direction. Hopefully the new Modern Warfare 3 weapons, perks and killstreaks will make up for it!
