ArmA demo

It hurts, it hurts!

Bohemia Interactive has released an updated demo for ArmA: Armed Assault, ahead of the game's release in American early next month.

It weighs in at a tactical 876MB and includes three multiplayer modes, three single-player missions and a limited version of the mission editor.

ArmA: Armed Assault was released in Europe earlier this year, and is Bohemia's follow-up to Operation Flashpoint, a name for which they no longer hold the rights, obviously.

Head over to our ArmA review to see why we found it to be an essential addition to any war simulation-loving gamer.

"and is Bohemia's follow-up to Operation Flashpoint, a name for which they no longer hold the rights, obviously."

Why? It's not that obvious to me.

Obivouse in the sense that they would have called it OF 2 otherwise, but they can't so it's called ArmA.

It feels like Op Flashpoint 0.8 to me - bought it, hated it. Even though I had loved OpFlash on the old xbox and PC.

Hey guys, correct me if I am wrong - isn't this game broken in places? You know, tearing, freezing of PC, etc.

I own it, and it does indeed feel very rough around the edges. But when it works (and you can work out what the hell you're supposed to be doing) it's damn fine.

Having said that, it is the only game I've ever played where I've found to progress I've had to headshot one of my own squadmates....

Good stuff. Glad to see *someone* is acknowledging that the Yanks speak some bizarre creole-like sub-dialect of our great language! Hope the conversion to American wasn't too painful for the translators' brains.

I'm with Gizmo on this one, ArmA still suffers from all the same issues that dogged Operation Flashpoint.

Poor character animation, takes too long to get up and down.
Helicopters are now much more difficult to control and behave unrealistically - you can perform loops and Immelmans.
Weighted gun movement feels very laggy.
    Crosshair inaccurate in 3rd person.
Weak voice audio ("Oh no, 1 is down. Oh no, 2 is down" etc.).
    AI can see through buildings.
Not enough variety of equipment and vehicles (much less than OFP).
    Horrible nightvision.
Boring missions, unengaging story. Lack of characterisation.
    Nice islands though!

Is the full game selling at all well?

the latest beta patch sorts a shed load of problems and improves on the game, the us release should herald the release of a full patch. this game will get better with time and patching and its already an amazing game, get some decent coop missions and get on line with a few friends

looking forward to a rig upgrade when i can play it will all the prettyness on high :D

I hope they patch it again soon since it's one of those annoying games where the demo worked better than the full game.
I have to run terrain, textures, post processing all on low to avoid lockups (vista/8800 gts) - on the demo I think I ran everything maxed out.

Plus it's got that 'fade' bollox in it...

The first mission was cheesy. Civilians were standing there like imbeciles. The engine had problems and lagged way too much. I haven't tried the new patch but don't feel like it really.

PC gaming is past its prime.

Blimey. Didn't realise it was from the OPFlash guys. I thought it was another American Army training simulator/game thingy. Might actually have to get it then.

Arma has so much potential, and the islands are hugely impressive to look at, but it has edges rougher than grade F sandpaper. The recent 1.05 patch has a long list of improvements, but good luck noticing any of them.

@Pulsar_t: PC gaming is past its prime.

Priceless tip there mate, thanks for that. You've just saved everybody a lot of money...
