The good news is it will be brought back online in "mid-to-late January". Players who have access to it now will retain access to the alpha when it returns in 2016.

Furthermore, more players will be added to the closed beta upon its return. "We do plan to invite more players to the Closed Beta after it comes back online," Blizzard stated. "The exact timing and how many players are invited will be determined by our testing needs."

"This phase of development has been key, but now it's time to analyse the data we have, dig into your feedback even further, and put that knowledge to use as best we can," the developer announced on Battle.net. "To accomplish this, we will be bringing the Overwatch Closed Beta offline for an extended break beginning on Thursday, December 10 at 9:00 a.m. PST. During this downtime, we're looking forward to making more improvements to the game, as well as continuing to work on in-development features like spectating and progression."

While the beta will be taken offline, players with access will still be able to login to the game's closed beta forums until 18th December.
