See what Mario looks like in Unreal Engine 4

Watch now before Nintendo pulls it down the warp pipe.

The latest Mario games for Wii U have seen Nintendo's famous mascot finally make the leap into HD, but still - you've never seen him like this before.

Aspiring animator Aryok Pineral has posted footage of Mario exploring environments cooked up in Unreal Engine 4.

Pineral has taken pains to point out that "all the environment assets were taken from the Unreal marketplace, all the character actions were scripted using blueprints only, all animations were re-created from scratch".

Despite this, the famously-litigious Nintendo may still have something to say on the matter.

Back in March, another fan launched a not-for-profit Mario 64 HD project to rework Nintendo's classic platformer in Unity. But Nintendo issued a takedown notice shortly afterwards, and the project was pulled.

So, while it lasts, watch Mario in Unreal Engine 4 at 1080p60 below - it may be the closest we'll see to a new-look Mario game before the Nintendo's mysterious NX console rolls around:
