Random is back in Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls

Adventure Mode unshackles your progress from the campaign, too.

At a panel at its BlizzCon convention in Anaheim, California, Blizzard revealed new features of Diablo 3's Reaper of Souls expansion that heavily ramp up the randomisation of the game and remove the need for players to endlessly retread the game's heavily scripted campaign acts.

Game director Josh Mosqueira admitted that the original game's campaign did not sit well with the series' tradition of randomisation, with environments that felt largely similar on subsequent play-throughs.

Not only will new campaign environments like the just-unveiled climatctic area, Pandemonium, have much more randomised layouts - where their form and the direction you take through them can be radically changed - but the game will be opened out by a new, more random way to play: Adventure mode.

In adventure mode - which can be used for levelling as well as at the endgame - all waypoints across the game's five acts will be unlocked, and you can travel around the map at whim.

Randomly-generated Bounties will suggest areas to visit each time you play. A Bounty might suggest you take down a boss, completely clear a dungeon, complete an event or find and kill a unique monster - often in a different location from where it would be found in the campaign.

Bounties will reward you with gold and experience, and access to Nephalem Rifts. These dungeon-style areas are completely random mash-ups of environments and monsters from right across Diablo 3. They might feature greatly increased density of enemies, bosses with remixed skills spawning into the dungeon rather than their own areas, and crazy buffs for the player like a lightning aura that strikes all nearby enemies.
