Monster Hunter Tri G shifts one million in Japan

Monster success.

Monster Hunter Tri G has shipped one million copies in Japan, Capcom has announced.

Sales of the Nintendo 3DS game, which launched in Japan on 10th December 2011, have helped the hugely popular action series top the 20 million units sold mark.

Monster Hunter Tri G on 3DS is based on Wii game Monster Hunter Tri, which launched in August 2009. It uses the Circle Pad Pro attachment.

Capcom said the 3DS game has become popular among a broad range of people extending from current to new game players. Boosting its popularity was Capcom's decision to send a truck with game playing machines to 18 locations throughout Japan as a way of getting a demo version of the game out to the masses. The company collaborated with drink Asahi and CALBEE, too. There are even Monster Hunter-themed arcade machines.

Tri G has yet to be announced for a Western release. Nintendo Europe's latest 2012 software release schedule shows no sign of the game.

The next all-new Monster Hunter is Monster Hunter 4, already announced as an exclusive for 3DS.

    Nice, but I don't know whether I should get this for my Wii or 3DS. Hmm..

    Guessing 'Shipping' doesn't mean 'sold'. 30% of 3DS owners buying the game would be quite an achievement.

    Get it for Wii, I don't think 3ds has WiFi multiplayer.

    The 3DS version doesn't even have a European release date yet

    Can't go wrong with the Wii version (it has online, unlike the 3DS version), but the 3DS version seems to have a lot more content in terms of monsters and weapons. I say buy the Wii version for a low price to see if you like it, then pick up the 3DS version when (if?) it comes out here.

    @Showmeyomoves Wii version in Japan had no online play either. Ninty asked Capcom to add online for western release.

    The Japanese version of Tri does have online play. All they did for us was add Wii Speak support and remove the fee.

    Never played a monster hunter game but that trailer looks pretty amazing.

    Capcom better hurry up and ship some more copies as it will be sold out next week.

    Edit 730,000 sold.

    @roz123

    I've read that it isn't going to be released over here, which is real a shame. PSP owners never got MHP3rd either.

    Despite a loyal and fanatical userbase (myself included), the sales of MHFU and MH Tri just weren't high enough to warrant a Western release. Apparently.

    For those of you pondering which MH Tri to get, the 3DS version is the G-rang edition. New monsters, new weapons and a whole new nigh-on impossible skill level.

    @FladgeMangle,

    Where have you read that? I'd be very surprised if it didn't make it out over here, it's not as if it's a particularly expensive project for Capcom. Besides, Nintendo localised and distributed Monster Hunter Tri in the West for Capcom, because Capcom believe Nintendo's success in turing Japanese phenomenon into Western hits (Brain Training, Professor Layton, Pokemon) will rub off onto Monster Hunter. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo localising and distributing both this and Monster Hunter 4 in Western markets (along with the circle pad) were terms of the exclusivity deal Capcom have with Nintendo. It must've taken quite a big effort from Nintendo to tie Monster Hunter down on a Nintendo format, considering the series built its success in Japan on the PSP. It's also worth pointing out Monster Hunter Tri is the most successful Monster Hunter in the West so far.

    And of course, recent comments from Capcom suggest the publisher is highly committed to making sure Monster Hunter becomes a global hit rather than a purely Japanese hit:

    "The next all-new Monster Hunter is Monster Hunter 4, already announced as an exclusive for 3DS."

    My distaste for Capcom has become full blown despair. Wasn't the money being made releasing new Mhunter games on Sony consoles the right kind of money, Capcom?

    Monster Hunter 4, already announced as an exclusive for 3DS.
    Has it though? So far it's an assumption as no one has outright said it's 'exclusive'.

    looking forward to monster hunter games on my 3ds

    I think I'll just get MH Tri for Wii, and then get MH 4 whenever that comes out.
