Secret World "different game" on console

Project depends on PC success - Funcom.

MMO The Secret World will have to be "a different game" to work on consoles, Funcom has told Eurogamer.

That's assuming the PC game becomes "a huge success" and justifies the continuation of the console project in the first place.

"We are focusing on the PC version right now," writer/director Ragnar Tornquist explained. "That is our primary market and we want that version to be as good as possible.

"I've been very vocal in saying that when - I guess also if - we have a console version of The Secret World, it's not going to be exactly the same game. I don't think that fits. I don't think console gamers sitting on the couch in front of a big TV want to play the exactly same game as they would on their PC with a mouse and keyboard. That doesn't compute - that doesn't work.

"You need to create a different gameplay experience," he added. "You can still have the same setting, you can still have the same philosophies, the same basic systems. But you really need to make a different game. How different that will be, it's hard to say."

"I think it will only happen if The Secret World turns out to be ... a huge success."

Ragnar Tornquist

Tornquist revealed that he has had "a team" working on an Xbox 360 version of The Secret World "specifically". He made no mention of PS3.

"Right now we're not focusing on [the Xbox 360 game]," he said. "It is a challenge, and it's a challenge because neither Microsoft nor Sony has made great strides to open up the platforms to MMOs. Sony has definitely done some experiments with DC Universe, which has worked quite well.

Tornquist reiterated: "It's not something we're focusing on now. I think it will only happen if The Secret World turns out to be - as of course it hopefully is - a huge success. We will want to do things on other platforms; we will want to expand the universe. But it won't be the same game."

Eurogamer published a preview of The Secret World this afternoon, along with an exclusive interview with game writer/director Ragnar Tornquist.

Thats a wild assumption, that console players also have a gaming PC

He's still got a point though. Even if I wasn't a PC gamer, that doesn't mean I want to interact with a game in the same way as its PC counterpart.

TBH I think releasing on PC first and seeing how things go is a wise approach, rather than trying to juggle too many things and end up spreading the dev team too thinly. I guess they learned a few things from AoC, which was originally slated for consoles as well if people can remember?

I played Anarchy Online, an MMO by Funcom for a long time. The one thing I learnt from that experience was that Funcom are dumbasses and I hate them with every fibre of my being. I hope this game fails, their next game fails and every game they make from that point on fails. The sooner this company goes bankrupt the better.

I wouldn't blame you if you thought this post was just an an isolated personal vendetta that some guy has against Funcom, but if you do some research about the way Funcom treats their paying customers you'll turn up many more examples. The company is poorly run, disorganised, has inconsistent customer support protocol and bans accounts first, then asks questions later (if at all).

Mr. Geoffry Higgins was the customer support manager at the time I was unfortunate enough to be dealing with Funcom's poor excuse for a customer support division. To this day I still consider tracking this bastard down just to punch him in the face. If I think about the things this company put me through my heart rate starts racing.

I really hate Funcom. A lot. If you ever decide to deal with this company I genuinely hope you never have the same experience I had with them. This company is the scum of the gaming community.

To add to my previous post, this guy actually made a site detailing the shortcomings of Funcoms customer support division. He, like myself, used to play Anarchy Online and thus the shortcomings he details are in the context of that game.

There are so many things wrong with this statement that i just don't know where to begin!

At least the PC version is taking priority, so hopefully there will be no 'consoleification'

    Another turd in Funcom's coffin.

He's right though. PC and console versions need to be developed separately. Its an obvious fact that the industry has been ignoring for far too long.
    With simultaneous development, everyone loses.

Sounds horribly like 'simplification' to me, hope I'm wrong.

Yet another game I was looking forward to, just like I was when Age of Conan was announced, only to to end up being a PC only game....what a bunch of C**ts!

I'll not bother paying anymore attention to news relating to this game then...
