Prey 2 doesn't use id Tech 5

"It wasn't really an option."

Prey 2 does use id Tech but doesn't use id Tech 5.

Bethesda mouthpiece Pete Hines told IGN that the game was started too long ago to use id Software's latest and greatest engine - the thing what powers Rage.

"This game has been in development for quite a while and id Tech 5 is still in progress (until Rage ships, and probably even after). So it really wasn't an option," he explained.

Bethesda was announced as the publisher of Prey 2 yesterday. The press release misleadingly informed that Prey 2 was "being built on the cutting edge id Tech engine from id Software".

Like Brink, Prey 2 uses an older id Tech engine (presumably id Tech 4). Brink developer Splash Damage has heavily modified the engine, though.

Prey 1 developer Human Head will make Prey 2, which has a 2012 date with PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Brink uses an older version of id Tech, too.

Looking forward to this. Only just finished the original and it was an above average shooter even for its age.

Could Eurogamer please stop using the term "mouthpiece". It sounds horrific.

Prey was ok. A change from the norm though.

Looking forward to this too. First one was a good romp, if not exactly incredible.

Except when referring to Major Nelson. 'Microsoft mouthpiece' has a nice ring to it. ;)

Blimey, they took their time getting round to making this!
    Welcome news though. :)

I agree with pretty much everyone else on the subject of Prey - not exactly mind-blowing, but certainly above average. I played it all the way to the end anyway.

I enjoyed Prey a lot - the gravity stuff was cool as was the portal stuff. I managed to shoot myself in the back of the head which rarely happens in a game. The graphics were snazzy enough for the day.

Playing the first Prey on acid was enjoyably confusing ;)

Pray's portals were before 'Portal' and very enjoyable at the time. Could definitely go for a sequel.

Pray was also a title that was allowed conversion from retail to Steam edition by entering retail key, that was very cool and I wish more games did the same.

I don't think the portals really added to it much, other than to increase the time you spent in one room before moving onto the next.

I'd be happy for them to be excluded in the next game.

Prey was great in that everything it did, it did well. It just didn't do anything remarkable that we hadn't seen before. Not even the portals thing was revolutionary enough.

A 2012 game using id Tech 4? What a shame!

Depends on who you're describing, if the guy is horrific, as Pete Hintes often is, then that's fine.

On topic, Prey was great, all of the stuff it did I found it did it really well, but perhaps most importantly it didn't pad itself out to be any longer than it needed to be. Between the combat and puzzles they managed 5 hours in the campaign, any longer and it would have felt stretched, any shorter and it would have felt like they weren't trying, I think they hit the balance just right.

I liked it but the shooting mechanics let it down for me. 1 of the first games I got on xbox at around a fiver so cant complain. First game I played with portal type things.
