Warhawk dev talks PlayStation project

Starhawk reveal incoming?

Warhawk developer Lightbox Interactive has come out of the woodwork to tease its mysterious PlayStation platforms project – a game rumoured to be called Starhawk.

President Dylan Jobe took to Twitter to promise that the wait for the game's reveal will be worth it.

"Last couple weeks have been spent cranking on builds for Sony," he said. "Lots of good play-tests and game improvements.

"Keeping the new game under wraps for this long is tough, and very hard on our fans. But will be worth it all in the end!!

"Fans deserve real game footage and not a BS pre-rendered trailer. That's tricky 'cause pre-rendered trailers are much 'safer' to do.

"But all the investment and time in the game itself is ultimately the right direction. For the product *and* for the fans!"

Lightbox, formed in 2009 by former Incognito staffers, signed a multi-year, multi-game deal with Sony Computer Entertainment America to develop for PlayStation platforms.

In April 2009 Sony America trademarked the name "Starhawk", adding weight to rumours that Jobe was taking the series into space. Could it also head towards the Next Generation Portable?

    Somone enlighten me on Warhawk?

I know people say it's a great game - but how difficult is it to fly, say, compared to a chopper in bad company 2?

Warhawk vehicles are a piece of piss to use.

It's a very arcady game to play, but due to it's simplicity it works. Really enjoyed warhawk, and purchased all the DLC packs. But i think it benefitted from being an early release for the console.

Is this IGN's big reveal for today?
  • DreadedWalrus #7 1 year ago

So they're going from Warhawk to Starhawk? What next? World of Warhawk?

Edit: Why the negs? I'm not saying it's a derivative game or anything like that. I just thought the naming strategy was humorous.

This was the game that convinced me that downloadable games could be fully fledged experiences. It was release early on psn and was even cheaper then the boxed version at the time.

Great game huge environments and real fun to play. Really looking forward to this.

Warhawk is a brilliant game. One of the best online games I've ever played.

Please let it be Starhawk. If it is I may do a little sex wee.

Cool, because I can't fly the chopper in any battlefield game for shit.

best online experience i've had so far

The motion controlled flight in WH was one of the few good uses of sixaxis. Very intuitive and fluid. WH itself, thought ag ood game, had too many faults for our interest as a team shooter for three players. Voice chat remained broken for the whole game, and you couldn't find and work with a teammate. Any encounters with my friends were chance encounters, often short lived - it was basically a solo experience on the same server. Plus the issues of breaking up friends into opposing sides.

So if this is WH2, and they update it with proper party support and teamwork, it'll be a definite purchase.

warhawk was brilliant but by the time I bought a copy the remaining players were too good, I got destroyed everytime I played and considered myself a hindrance to my team-so stopped playing. if this came out it'd mean I could almost start from a clean slate!

Warhawk did have a steep learning curve, but once that was overcome I've yet to have an online experience top it this gen.

Must have clocked 150 hours on it.

A LARGE portion of my warhawk love can be attributed to one simple fact.

    1x ps3
    4x people
split screen, same team, online pvp play.

You and 3x mates can turn the tide of most battles. Theres no better team than one sitting together playing in the same room.

Have they been working on this since Warhawk was released? That's a long development schedule. I wonder if there will be single player this time 'round.

I kind of like the idea of another MP only release simultaneously on PSN though.

Really looking forward to some details and footage.

I approve of this as the world needs mroe spaceplane games. Carry on

As Long as they retain 4-player split screen, I'm Sold.

@deepmenace : That rarely ever happened though. Most servers had balanced teams, which meant a console of multiple players joining were split among the teams. And if balanced teams was turned off, you'd often get people not checking their teams and them becoming very one sided. I used to host a server for our purposes and we had some great games, but we also played fairly and I would switch from the winning team to the losing if the numbers were unfair, to help them out. WH all too often had no-win situations with massive spawn kills, and you could as readily find yourself on the receiving end as often as dishing it out. The Warhawks themselves also caused a massive imbalance when one team had a few elite fliers.

WH was probably much more fun if you were an excellent player. If you were only good or less, there were too many things that could go wrong out of your hands that'd ruin the game. The lack of voice chat didn't help teamwork any, but then PS3 severely lacks voice chat teamwork anyway, with most people doing their own thing even in games like MAG. That's why tight party mechanics are so valuable, so you can at least work with a few mates in a squad to coordinate.

The (undeniably brilliant) idea that it's going to be Starhawk is just based on the fact that it sounds/reads a lot like Warhawk, isn't it? Seems a bit baseless if so. Is there anything more to it than the fact that someone suggested it and everyone now thinks that's what it'll be?

Why not Morehawk? Barhawk? War Mork? Tourwalk? Whore Pork? Sorewalk? Warspork? (Press triangle to switch between spoon and fork mode etc).

Awesome game btw, the soundtrack alone makes the sequel a day one for me. Wonder if they'll make a single player mode they're happy with this time.

warhawk is the only time I've ever believed accessibility is a good thing. Definately interested in their next project!
  • Scimarad #23 1 year ago

I generally find online shooters a bit intimidating and so I don't tend to bother but Warhawk was very, very easy to get into and heaps of fun to play. If I had one wish for the 'sequel' it would be that split-screen players could use their own profile, like in LBP...and every 360 game ever.

Really looking forward to seeing what they come up with.
  • Bloobat #24 1 year ago

@deepmenace I completly agree with you there, the BEST split-screen and online game I have EVER played,

should definatly be given to ps+ members for free....

Also got a stack of people online still!

Split-screen olnine better be in the sequal, with added support for seperate accounts!

If there was any ps3 game that could also play on a NGP it would be Warhawk. Who needs cod4, Warhawk was the best game to play in 07 and 08.
