PlayStation Move PC support incoming?

Sony to discuss Move Server at GDC.

Sony could be about to unveil official PC support for its PlayStation Move motion controller, if a Game Developers Conference panel listing is to be believed.

Kotaku has reported that Sony engineer John McCutchan will be taking to the stage at the San Francisco industry pow-wow next month for a presentation titled "Update on PlayStation Move Development".

According to the GDC site, "This talk will bring developers up to speed on developing for the PlayStation Move controller.

"We will cover developing for the new PlayStation Move Sharp Shooter accessory. We will discuss the new Move Server project that will make it possible for academics and hobbyists to develop software using the PlayStation Move controller on their own PCs."

We've contacted Sony for further clarification but failing that Eurogamer will be on site in San Francisco next month to report back on what Sony has to say.

Of course, this isn't the first time potential PC applications for the new wave of console motion controllers has been discussed in recent months. Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer recently hinted that official PC support for its Kinect peripheral wasn't far away.

Where Microsoft let the hobbyist to play about on the Kinect, Sony try and force the Move on them. Will they care? prob not. A few lightsaber demo's incoming though ;)

    Sounds great to me!

Can't really see why they wouldn't let them, still boggles my mind that sony still don't official let the DS3 work on the PC.

How about you get a legit driver for the DualShock out there first, Sony
  • SvennoJ #10 1 year ago

Combine Kinect with the Wii balance board and Move and we can have Tony Hawk lightsaber jousting!
  • bad09 #11 1 year ago

Yeah right, on PC you are lucky if they remember to include support for a simple game pad never mind adding waggle.
  • Instinct #12 1 year ago

I don't get what Sony get out of this.

    a few thoughts:

    - Kinect + Move would be cool, but I don't know how the drivers will interact.
    - Sony stretching itself way too thin with all these multiple releases. I wonder if it really has any clue what it is doing or is it taking "build them, they will come" approach.
    - Is DualShock driver ready for PC?

Aside from the ds3 driver, let's hope we can get some nice move games out of this. Heck, if anyone has the capability, get the folks at EA/viceral to let someone add Move support to dead space 2!

After playing extraction with the Move, I neeeed support for ds2!

Where Microsoft let the hobbyist to play about on the Kinect, Sony try and force the Move on them.

That's right, they're going to compile a hotlist of homebrew developers, hack their PCs to get the drivers installed, courier over a Move, Eye and Navi to their address, and send a Yakuza gangster over to stand over them and glower menacingly when they glance at their Kinect.

In other words, wtf are you talking about? Probably hobbyists don't hold much interest in Move because there are already equivalent bits of kit for the PC, but if any do, they'll be able to download drivers rather than try to custom build them, saving some development time. Just as MS have said they'll do for Kinect.

Christ, anything for a fanboy war, eh?

the Yakuza Gangster behind me said to tell you that it isn't true!

'Hopefully better than those shitty laggy lightsaber demos on Kinect!'

Shitty draggy lightsabre demos are where all PC motion control demos start... Even back in the ninties there was that guy who built a cam driven motion control lightsabre thing (back then it was a stick with two bits of red tape stuck to each end)
  • FogHeart #23 1 year ago

Ah, lightsabre demos....the "Hello World" of motion control dev :)
  • mrStones #24 1 year ago

Slightly off topic but is there a "navi" type controller for pc games? For people like me who don't mind using a mouse for games but fucking hates W,A,S,D. I tend to use motioninjoy and half my DS3, Analog stick + mouse is best of both worlds
  • Machiavellian #25 1 year ago

    @FogHeart
Actually there are official drivers and libraries out there now with prime sense stuff being released. MS has not released their stuff but you know it will be tied into a lot more stuff then just a driver layer. I predict that XNA will have a huge library for Kinect which takes time and there might be OS specific integration including other odd bits. I can see why it's taking MS longer to bring their support, probably why they let prime sense drop the drivers out there so people will be able to ramp up to a full development environment once MS is ready to release their stuff.

Be interesting if MS release their stuff at GDC.
