Duke Nukem pre-orders to be honoured

Gearbox working with retailers to sort it.

Good news for those who pre-ordered a copy of Duke Nukem Forever at some point in the last decade - you will indeed get your money's worth.

At least that's if Gearbox bossman Randy Pitchford has anything to do with it. Speaking to VG247 he said discussions with shopkeepers are already underway.

"There are a lot of people who pre-ordered the game. We've been starting to talk with retailers because we didn't take them directly, and 3D Realms didn't take them, it was all retailers going, 'I'm going to take this guy's money,'" Pitchford said.

But Gearbox won't stand for that sort of talk. "We've started to engage them, saying, 'Hey, you've got customers who you made a promise to, and any bad feeling they have will reflect on us, so can we work together to do something for those people?'

"I don't know what we can do yet, but something should be done for the people who pre-ordered."

Duke Nukem Forever is coming to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in February. Read our recent hands-on preview to find out how it's shaping up.

I guess that's the downside of calling their new game Duke Nukem Forever.

I suppose if you've still got your receipt from 10 years ago they would have to honour it, I don't know how else they coudl enforce it.

Randy said at PAX that even if they wont verify it, they are at least going to have a competition to find the person with the oldest DNF pre-order receipt and have some free swag and stuff for people who have had theirs for over ten years.

Of course, you should have been all betting on Duke all the time.

Coming a bit out of the blue this story really. There must be shops out there who have taken pre-orders and have no intention of giving a product or a refund doesnt seem like thatd wash with trading standards.

They should get what they ordered, its the same license isnt it, its not a completly different product than the one that was 'developed' by 3d realms in around 500BC.

    What about my Woolworths pre-order!

(Not really, but it would be funny.)

Do people actually pay in advance for a pre-order?

    > Do people actually pay in advance for a pre-order?

Yeah, it's common (at least in the US) to have to put a deposit down for a pre-order. I've seen DNF receipts with a $5 downpayment.

How many people's receipts still have any ink left on them?
  • coolbritannia #11 2 years ago

I don't get it, they pre-ordered, so what? They'll get the game still, what am I missing here?
  • photoboy #12 2 years ago

I'm pretty certain I got an email to say my pre-order was cancelled earlier this year. :(
  • Freek #13 2 years ago

It's a cool PR stunt/act of good will for people who stuck with the game, even after it was canceled.

I got to play the Duke Nukem Forever demo yesterday as part of the London Games Festival :-)

It was actually great fun, and better than I expected even after all its development problems. Gearbox, and especially their CEO Randy Pitchford, seem so enthusiastic about the game and are determined to finally get it finished and in the hands of the gaming public.

    Duke is (almost) back!

A guy on the Penny Arcade forums quite famously still has his receipt from an old, old pre-order.
  • kangarootoo #17 2 years ago

I didn't think a pre-order involved actually giving over money? I thought you were only charged when the product was sent to you.

Genius. Randy knows what makes gamers tick.

@for some preorders, particuarly on higer value items where demand is expected to outdo supply deposits are sometimes taken.

As has been mentioned before your post...
