Mafia II demo out now

24 hour PlayStation Plus exclusive on PS3.

2K Games has released a PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 demo for Mafia II.

The PS3 demo is a 24 hour PlayStation Plus exclusive, however, and will be available to download by all PS3 owners tomorrow.

Queue up the Xbox Live demo over at Xbox.com.

Or, PC gamers can download the PC demo from Steam.

"While the game spans two eras, the Mafia II demo invites gamers to dive into the Buzzsaw level, which takes place during the summer of the '50s – a time considered the 'Birth of Cool', and with it, rock 'n' roll, hot rods, and rebellious attitudes," says the official blurb.

In the demo, Vito Scaletta and his buddies, Joe and Henry, are sent to take out a mobster known as The Fat Man.

"This mission showcases vibrant edge-of-your-seat action, era-evoking cars, memorable characters and a snapshot of the expansive city of Empire Bay in this colourful era."

Game's out on all three platforms on 27th August 2010.

How long is it Gold exclusive for on Xbox?
  • Progguitarist #2 2 years ago

    Framerate is pretty shoddy.

PS3....not tried the 360 version yet.
  • Deckard1 #5 2 years ago

surprisingly ugly on the 360. Poor framerate, terrible screen tearing, and the worst jaggies I've seen on a game since halo 3. Feels a little clunky as well. Pretty disappointed to be honest, hopefully the story/mission variation is good because so far its not looking as good as I was hoping.

That doesn't sound good, I'm about to try the PC demo and will report back shortly. ;)

Ouch this doesn't sound good. It always 'looked' like it would play rather smoothly, that said, this is a demo so there's time yet.
  • Darren #8 2 years ago

PC demo is terrific with great performance, at least if you have the hardware, and graphically it looks great even if the AA looks the same whether it is on or off (i.e. an el cheapo blur effect a la GTA IV PC). Definitely going for the PC version now but I'll try the 360 and PS3 demos to see how they compare.

    @Goodfella:

Would be interested to hear what it's like and how it runs (and specs!)

I'm not going to get fuckin' gold to get a demo.

Edit: I've always been more concerned about LA Noire, I've been hyped about that one for years. Mafia 2, I'm hoping it ends up good but it hasn't been one I've anticipated for long.

@Boomerang - The PC demo also supports the 360 controller natively showing the correctly coloured icon buttons and you can switch between it and the keyboard/mouse at will with the game detecting which you're using and adjusting the icons accordingly. Excellent considering this is not a Games for Windows title as far as I know.
  • AdamAsunder #12 2 years ago

I'm with Deckard. Thought it was shoddy. Generic characters, solid if unspectacular gunplay, lots of screen tearing. No blind firing either, wtf?

Severely lacking in it's own identity, just feels uninspired. Graphics are fine but not the leap over GTA4 that a condensed world would suggest. The only thing that I found that was remotely different was porn as collectibles. That was...interesting.

Maybe a renter, but only because there's not much out between now and Reach.
  • Goodfella #13 2 years ago

Darren beat me to it. :D

I've got an ATi 4870, 8GB Ram (yes I know, too much) and a Q6600 quad core, a couple of years since I built it but the game runs really well. Everything was set to it's highest by default except AA was off, it's slightly sluggish with it on so I turned it off again and the game hardly looks any worse for it.

V Sync is on and so there's zero screen tear, all in all runs excellently on my spec.

    ZizouFC,

No they've actually got this one right. Those that pay get it a day early, everyone gets it on the day we would normally, what is there to moan about?
  • KreyAtiv #17 2 years ago

I've tried the PC demo and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Quite the difference from Arcade to Simulation when driving the cars.
Good plumes of smoke when you are doing doughnuts in the car (or truck) and hoodcaps come off as well.
Found two decent ramps (one is actually a set of steps) and quite a lot of the fencing is breakable which is handy for police pursuits. Damage model for the cars is quite good, rolled a car over a couple of times and the roof is dented and such.
Can even go into the Body Shop to tune the car up or change the colour or the plates. :)
You get three cars in your garage and have a little under 10 minutes to mess around in free roam where upon you fail the mission and get put back into the house. Downloading the 360 one to see how that is before deciding which to buy.
  • ZizouFC #18 2 years ago

You are right... didn't think of it that way.

Exclusive? For 24 hours? How the feck is a 24hr period worthy of being 'exclusive'? FFS devs/ad men that is *not* an exclusive. Timed exclusives are just wrong and to claim 24hrs is an exclusive time period is ridiculous! What next? The 'couple of hours until the other system gets it online' exclusive?

The utter cretins. Does this mean when games are launched in the states or europe a few days earlier it's a 'continent exclusive'? No it does not.

/Breathes deeply and counts to 10 slowly.......

Edit: Christ it's barely bloody newsworthy, never mind exclusive. They're surely not using this to trumpet PS+?

Amazing demo. Really captures everything I loved about the first and just piles on the extras too.

Still gob smacked at how well it runs on my PC as I was dreading severe performance problems, but they never materialised. Then again I'm not using physx.

As always a time limit is included and as always there is a counter measure already released...

Getting concerned about all the negative issues that are coming out about this game. Of course the demo would be an offshoot of the actual game and so probably an earlier build, but some of the reviews have been less than stellar.

Was a first day buy, but now i am not so sure... well done Mafia 2 for potentially ruining my August :D

Oh well lets hope it works out a non polished classic.

Any word on how old this demo build is? I remember seeing this in video form over a year ago.
  • Miths #28 2 years ago

    @Boomerang

I ran the demo on a Vista x64 Core 2 Quad Q9400 PC with 8 GB RAM and a Geforce GTX 260. Screen resolution 1920x1200.

With PhysX (it was a massive framerate killer on my system) and ambient occlusion turned off (and AF at 8 rather than the default 16) I was getting an average of 53 fps in the included benchmark (available from the options menu).
Within the actual game I was getting around 35-80+ fps with the same settings, although I opted to turn off the anti-aliasing setting, as that did seem to cause a few too many drops into the 30s.

There have been a few games lately that have made my GTX 260 start to show its age, particularly after I upgraded to a 1920x1200 monitor, but overall the PC version of this game seems pretty well optimized and looks quite good.

I'm looking forward to trying the PS3 demo tomorrow, but it sounds like getting the PC version is a no brainer here (and it would be by default it if wasn't because I tend to suffer from light motion sickness when playing some games on a PC monitor - due to the closer distance I assume - and Mafia II appears to be one of them).

"What are you doing still running Vista???"

I honestly don't feel like bothering with an upgrade until I buy my next PC, or something else forces me to reinstall Windows. Vista has been working perfectly fine for me on this PC since I bought it around a year ago, and I just can't be arsed to go through that annoying process of installing and configuring a ton of programs and getting all the backed up data back where it belongs, that's associated with an OS reinstall.

There was a time where I actually enjoyed that - but these days I just want a PC that works with as little maintenance work from me as possible :).

Because windows 7 is not a reskinned vista at all is it?
  • Miths #36 2 years ago

    @Boomerang

I'll definitely be hooking up my 360 controller for the driving as well (I didn't get around to try it when I played the demo earlier, but I'm assuming it will work).
Using keyboard to control a car completely sucks all the fun out of what I usually consider one of the highlights of games like these (and I'm a huge racing game fan as well, but I suspect my Logitech G25 wheel probably isn't supported by Mafia II :)).

... Actually, if a controller is supported for everything in the PC version I imagine I might even try it for the on-foot shooting. Being able to sit a little further from my PC monitor should help with my motion sickness issues. I better load up that demo again and check out what the control options are.

Ah wicked I didn't know that! I loved playing on the pad and switching to the wheel in the first. I'm so excited now! :)
  • Loftee #41 2 years ago

Yep, being able to use a wheel in Mafia made the driving experience so much better, so when I found out wheels were supported in Mafia 2 (assumed they would to be honest) I was chuffed, made my decision of which platform to get this on very easy indeed.

Tried the 360 demo and not impressed at all, the technical issues are way too much of a distraction for me. I'm going to give the PC demo a shot with the 360 controller and wait for reviews to see if it's improved in the retail version. Gameplay wise it feels fine, cover feels a little awkward, and the soundtrack is really good.

Bit gutted really as Mafia is up there as one of the best games I've ever played and would have loved to play this sequel in my living room but seems to be PC or nothing.

  • Loftee #45 2 years ago

I'm just gonna wait a couple of weeks until my PC copy turns up in the post and play it then:)
  • Miths #46 2 years ago

"The PC version supports steering wheels, as did the original Mafia, so your G25 will be fine."

Cool. Although it's probably going to be too cumbersome for me to bother - I've got my G25 mounted on a Wheelstand Pro, so I'm sitting relatively far from the screen when I'm using it. Fine for racing games, but probably a bit too far away for a shooter.

I'm about to give the 360 controller a try now though.
  • bad09 #47 2 years ago

"still downloading on PC for 3 hours now... i'll sleep and play tomorrow :D "

Ouch! It took just over 10 minutes for me :)
  • Murby #48 2 years ago

Just completed the demo on the 360

    Pros:

Ran well, Seems clunky but like its supposed to be that way
    Was enjoyable
    Good voice actors
Driving was fun as was the gun play

    Cons:
Tinge of blue on the cut scenes? (Not sure if anyone else would agree)
    Demo is short! Very short!
    Buttons didnt feel mapped right

Overall felt like a good demo. Nice mixture of everything just seemed very short for what you have to do. It will definately get compared to GTAIV but in good ways not bad.
  • Eraserhead #49 2 years ago

Just played the PC version. They're doing something funny with distance rendering... everything gets downscaled in res, so even at 1920 x 1200 it looks blurry and low-res past a certain point.

Still, not bad - better than I hoped having seen the recent gameplay vids, which looked quite poor. I just hope it has the atmosphere and the amazing direction of the first game... oh, and I want that title music back, dammit.
  • brseg #50 2 years ago

Had a quick bash on the demo (xbox version). Undecided at the moment, but first impressions:

    Positives:
Captures the feel of the era.
Detailed environments. seems like some care put into the world, like the diner, garage, your house etc.
Good driving mechanics. Nice car graphics. Nice explosions :)
Aiming quite easy, but you still need to take cover else you get shot pretty easy.
Police seemed pretty realistic, giving you tickets for violations etc (like Mafia1, iirc).
    Some nice environmental damage.
Quite a few npc around town, with some good animation.

    Negatives:
Framerate felt odd/variable to me (Digital Foundry take a look?!).
Control of the main character sometimes awkward, though perhaps it improves with practice. You know, the usual problems getting in a door etc.
Taking/leaving cover didnt always work as I expected.
Texturing looked great in some places, not so great in others. A few odd texture effects / aliasing /grainy issues (prob notice these more if close to screen). I'd say not much different to GTA4 really.
Close up character graphics not that great, but better than a lot of games.
  • bad09 #51 2 years ago

I like this, was gonna get it anyway but the demo really sold me wonderful game world and good mechanics and graphics.

My only gripes with the demo are camera moans.

I'm not overly impressed that, like GTA4, the realism is been cut down a bit with no view inside the car you only get an on the bonnet view but I guess they couldn't do that for the consoles so cut it, shame.

Also, sadly no cinematic camera to take in the city.
  • anamenos #52 2 years ago

    wow , i am jealous..
  • Haloboy #53 2 years ago

Has anyone else noticed the excellent use of birds? If you keep your eyes peeled at all times you will often see a bird land on say a sign post, or a telephone wire, or the window ledge of a building. It's a very small detail but it really adds to the proceedings as you go about the game world.

  • TadejVig #54 2 years ago

I played it earlier on PC, and it's pretty good.

Compared to GTA IV, I prefer Mafia 2 (at least for now). First of all, the city is not as big as it was in GTA 4 where I got lost, or I didn't bother to drive anymore and took a taxi. And Mafia 2 is way more colorfull, which is a positive thing. I also prefer the action, cover works pretty good, tho they could include blind fire. But otherwise, you die pretty quickly and the weapons reaction are great, I also love what bullets do to an enemy, so I think the action will be good.

As for the missions, this one seems good - a mix of driving, shooting with a few set pieces that make it way more spectacular. The characters are also great, I already like them, and they seem to have an interesting backstory. As I hear that the game will feature a 10 year storytime, it should be epic. Oh, and other missions should be good too as I saw a lot of variation in the trailer, like beating up guys, completely destorying a store with machine guns, car chases, steatlh missions, and a mission where you wear a jail uniform or something... so definetly a variation there. First mafia had a lot of variation in missions, so I'm expecting the same here.

It also ran very smooth for me, 60 FPS min with Physx on medium, on 1680x1050. Much better then GTA IV, which was a pretty crappy port and had a LOT of bugs.

Anyways, this game seems smooth, fun, addictive, the story will be great I'm sure, and the action is pretty exciting, so I'm definetly buying this one :)
  • mkreku #55 2 years ago

Hmm.. I am trying to download it from Steam right now. First it took me like 20 tries to get Steam to log in (Connection not possible, try again). Then the button to download the Mafia 2 demo just didn't show up..l until I reloaded the Mafia 2 page fifteen times or so. But I finally got it downloading at a fair pace (1,1 MB/s), but now it says "Download paused" and I can't get it to start up again!

    Steam is such a wonder.
  • Miths #56 2 years ago

It did that "download paused" thing for me as well. Right click on the demo name in the list, choose "pause download" (or whatever it's called) - it doesn't matter that it actually already is paused - and after that it should be possible to choose resume download and get it going again.
  • Miths #57 2 years ago

I just tried the PS3 demo (and just signed up for PSN+, hoping some interesting offers come along over the next three months, right now I already own most of the interesting games it offers).
It's not quite as ugly as I had expected after reading some of the 360 impressions (not that I imagine the PS3 version looks better than the 360 version), but it's definitely nowhere near as pretty as the PC version either.
Aliasing ("jaggies";) is severe, there's a fair amount of screen tearing (particularly indoors on foot when you turn the camera a lot), textures are obviously much lower resolution than the PC version, everything has a slightly blurry look to it, and the lighting and shadow model seemed pared down quite a bit.

I didn't notice the framerate as as bad as I had expected though. It seems like the usual case with console games for me - my eyes are for some reason able to see a typical 30 fps console game as relatively smooth (this one definitely looks like it dips below 30 now and then though, but no worse than similar open world games), while I usually need 45+ fps to perceive a PC game the same way. But I guess that might have to do with the much sharper image and closer distance to the screen.

I'll definitely be getting the PC version of Mafia II - and probably play both driving and on-foot sections with my 360 controller.
  • Haloboy #58 2 years ago

The only downside I can see with using the mouse and keyboard when driving is that you lose the ability to look left and right/up and down when using the bonnet cam.

    And while I am here....

Never played the first game but my friend was adamant that I should get this game (However this was the same friend who told me to buy APB. Cunt) downloaded the Demo this morning on steam and really enjoyed it. Pre-purchased it right away. Ran near enough perfect on my rig

    Intel i5 2.66Ghz
    ATI 1GB 5870
    4GB DDR3 Ram
    Windows 7 ultimate x64

Was running at a steady 57FPS with everything at high according to the in-game benchmark.
Silly question I didn't have Physx running because I assumed that would only work with a nVidia GPU. Would it work with an ATI card?
  • Tw1stid #60 2 years ago

On the 360 demo, did anyone else get told to look around with the [Insert picture of a Windows Mouse here]? Lol
  • bad09 #61 2 years ago

    @ISmoke

Remember you get the first game when you pre order from Steam so now you can sample it's greatness (4/10 EG? REALLY??)

As for Physx, someone more tech savvy might prove me wrong but I believe you still get the physics with ATI cards it's just dealt by the CPU putting more strain there.
  • Miths #62 2 years ago

    @Haloboy!

With driving it's not really a matter of precision or other objective advantages of using one input device other another - as it would or could be with eg. shooter controls - it's a matter of "feel".
Too me controlling a car on the screen with keyboard just feels absolutely terrible and completely unimmersive (is that a word?), while a gamepad - with or without rumble effects, but preferably with - does a pretty good job for a game of this type and most arcade racers (in anything resembling a racing sim however, the gap between gamepad and force feedback steering wheel and pedals is massive as well).

I was a PC gamer long before I bought my first console, and even ten years ago I would never dream of playing a PC racing game - of any kind - with keyboard controls. I used a variety of cheap gamepads back then.
I think we have to go back to the early Need for Speed games in the mid 90s to get to the last time I used keyboard for a racing game.
And while Mafia II or the GTA games aren't racing games, there's obviously plenty of driving to be done. In GTA IV on PC I switched between gamepad for driving and mouse/keyboard on foot.

    Thanks, Bad!

I'll fire up both the first game to see what it was all about hopefully it should be a laugh. Even though it'll be showing it's age. I'll have to have a look and see if it will work through my CPU saying that I bet it will knock my frames down quite a bit. As long as I can run it around 35-40 without dropping it should be ok, I suppose.

Does Physx really bring much to the table or would I not notice not having it?

    Sorry for all the questions!
  • bad09 #64 2 years ago

    @ISmoke

Well although I couldn't run it full whack on Batman Physx certainly did add something to that game, but in the name of performance I don't think it matters that much TBH.
  • ISmoke #65 2 years ago

I'll have a look when I'm back home, just paid for the game a minute ago (turns out I didn't pay earlier it was just in my basket. God I love my iPhone) so I'll try the demo out again with it turned on.

The first game got 88 on metacritic but only a 4/10 here? Should be interesting though. Hopefully.
  • makeamazing #66 2 years ago

The first one is pretty good, its very retro though and you do have to ignore the single flat (ie not 3D) texture buildings in lots of places.. but storywise its great.

Played the PC demo on steam, performance was pretty good, considering i am on bootcamp/mac and the graphics cards are not known for being that great. Averaging about 40FPS on the performance test option.

I think i am going to love the story for this game, controls... driving was alittle off (but then so was GTA4 for a while until i got used to it). I couldnt get cover and shooting to work very well (but that might be issues with the so called mighty mouse on the mac rather than the game). As someone else has said the world being smaller is a big plus, as in the end in GTA i was also just speed travelling to places, rather than driving.

I did not notice any screen tearing on the Windows version. Its colourful and bright and pretty good. So from what i can see from the demo

    Pros:
Looks like the story will be interesting
    Good voice acting
Running and gunning was alot of fun
    Nice indoor content/objects

    Cons:
    - Controls on a Mac Keyboard were not great, but remapping them would fix that. So not really a con, but i think a controller is going to be a better option
    - Driving might take alittle getting used to
    - Gun cursor is on the big side :D

btw the NPC when fixing their Car engine on sideroad, stand beside him. The NPC will occationally stop fixing car and stare at me LOL

there's a lot nice little detail like that in mafia 2.

"I guess they couldn't do that for the consoles so cut it, shame."

What? Why?. I think there is other reasons for this tbh.

I enjoyed the gameplay (combat particularly), even though it's a pretty oldschool open world game, but the 360 demo was technically ropey as hell.

Really it's on the borderline where I would say that it's shoddy project management and they should have worked much harder on optimising for the platform. Try shipping a game with that level of low-res and low-AA and see what kind of reviews you get - it'll get slaughtered.

I hope the full game is much improved. I don't think that I can justify spending full whack on such an unpolished engine - even if the game was story wise exemplar (which this won't be).

...and you know this how? The last game had one of the best stories of any game I've ever played, and characters were very well developed, and never felt like simple parodies like they do in GTA.

Graphics are very well optimised in PC. As I played it on Xbox 360,too And If it is the final product, console owners will be disappointed. No AA and (noticably) low fps. Anyway, I'm looking forward to see some reviews, graphics are not the only problem. We'll probably see a series of patches to the game.

It's well-rehearsed gangster schtick which you've seen in any number of films or tv shows, or indeed games. The GTA games are actually a cut above with their parody when they do it right (the radio from GTA2, III and IV, Vice City and San Andreas' central plotlines and characters), but Mafia is extremely on the nose.

I'm not saying it won't be good because I agree the first game was good when it got going, but it just won't be the most original story committed to a game. You can tell as much from what has been shown already, and the demo itself.

Android - 'Consoles are starting to show age now'. This has nothing to do with Mafia 2 being poorly optimised for consoles.... Under your logic Mafia 2 is as good as any game can get graphically. Uncharted 2, MGS4, KZ2 say your wrong.
