Mini-game compilation. Two words that can make the blood run cold, tainted as they are with the fetid stench of cheap, cynical shovelware, created solely to bilk a few coins from the purses of gamers too na´ve and inexperienced to know what they're doing.
It doesn't have to be that way, of course, as this collected edition of the popular Bit.Trip series proves.
Developed by Californian outfit Gaijin Games and previously released digitally across various formats including PC, WiiWare and iOS, Bit.Trip is something of a standard-bearer for the neo-retro indie movement. The series combines the savage difficulty and chunky visuals of early '80s gaming with pulsing chiptune music and a healthy sprinkling of ironic charm. Bit.Trip Saga collects all the games for the 3DS; a companion edition, Bit.Trip Complete, does the same for Wii [see sidebar, below left].

Bit.Trip Complete on Wii and Bit.Trip Saga on 3DS package up six titles from the retro-themed downloadable series for a retail release.
Bit.Trip Beat, Core, Void, Runner, Fate and Flux are included in both versions of the compilation, although the Wii edition adds a generous portion of extra bits and pieces too.
Gamers can play the latest two Bit.Trip releases over a month before their UK release.
Japanese import publisher Rising Star Games has announced a bustling 2012 release schedule for Europe, with an increased emphasis on 3DS games.
Rising Star confirmed it would handle publishing duties for five 3DS titles this year, including retro rhythm title Bit.Trip Saga and the latest Harvest Moon farming sim games.
Rune Factory Oceans, the latest chapter of Harvest Moon's spin-off RPG series, will also arrive. But the PlayStation 3 and Wii game will only launch in Europe on PS3.
The Bit.Trip games launch in UK shops early next year on Nintendo Wii and Nintendo 3DS.
Bit.Trip Saga and Bit.Trip Complete launch for 3DS and Wii respectively on 13th September in the US, publisher Aksys has announced.
The downloadable Bit.Trip games are being rounded up onto a single Wii disc later this Summer, developer Gaijin Games has announced.
Bit.Trip Complete will include all six episodes in Gaijin's genre-hopping revisionist jaunt through the history of game development, and a treasure trove of extras on the side.
Here's the full rundown of additional content promised, as detailed on the developer's blog:
